ESPN: The 49ers will offer Kyle Shanahan their head coaching job

It has been a while since the Atlanta Falcons lost — Dec. 4 to Kansas City on Eric Berry’s Pick-2, to be exact — but they’re in danger of losing offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who’s a pretty big deal around Flowery Branch. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the San Francisco 49ers are prepared to offer Shanahan their head coaching job, and it’s a rare career assistant who’d turn down one of the 32 best jobs in the industry.

Schefter reports that the 49ers want to have Shanahan in for a second interview next week, which will either be the week before the Falcons leave for Houston and Super Bowl LI or the beginning of their offseason. Falcons fans know how this works: A team can’t hire an assistant as long as his team is still playing, which is why Dan Quinn wasn’t officially announced as head coach in Hall County until after Seattle had lost Super Bowl Whatever-It-Was to New England.

About Shanahan: He’s really good and — as noted — I was really wrong about him. He’d be much missed. I’m sure the Falcons can find someone who’d be interested in coaching Ryan and Julio and Devonta and Sanu, et alia. I’m not sure they’ll find anyone better. Actually, I’m pretty sure they won’t.

49'ers can't get rid of Col he isn't worth much anymore(as reported by ESPN)they are stuck with him! Do't leave and go to that pit.

Fingers crossed, but can't blame him if he goes.  It would be a shame as he and Q have just gotten this thing off the ground.

he's very very young. I would wait a year for another team.

We're not going to keep him forever - but he should pass on this one. The organization is a dumpster fire - it would be like signing up with the Falcons in the mid 80's. He should wait for a better shot.

i think that SF is a mess and the owner will be in rehab within the next year.  lol, they have a great stadium that has no shade, jk.  anyway, their qb position is so suspect that i would not want the job.

and the delicate nature the recent coaches have had-fired after one season and 3 bad drafts in a row, and a qb that pissed off a nation, so yeah i am not so sure these are even close to the niners of old and they were bad for over a decade plus until they won in 2011-2013.  i think kyle says no, and stays in atlanta.  he wanted the denver job i bet.

Hope he don't take it as 49ers are a sinking ship.  Falcons,  Blank should offer him a big raise to stay. That's what happens when you start winning everyone wants your coaches... get off the money and pay him to stay.

Go Falcons, Rise Up Big!

Staying through the next few "glory years" of the Falcons would be the better bet...and a lot more fun. And he could probably have his pick of HC jobs...Some MUCH better situations than the Niners. I mean, even Belichek will retire at some point ( though JD would probably hold out for that one).

Seriously, Shanny's personality probably meshes with SF about the way Harbaugh's did. Hope he stays!

NO NO NO NO NO NO!!  Leave Shanahan alone!  We are just getting good and it would suck to lose him.  Especially to the 49ers!  Seriously!  That organization is not good! Why do you think Josh Daniels turned it down?  You will get your chance another year!

Go Falcons!!

Don't do it! Until they get rid of Colin, the 49's are cursed and will tarnish you. They are a sinking ship.  You need another year with the Falcons to hone your skills.

Shanahan needs to stay another year. Coaching jobs open up all the time and every year new teams with quality players slump and fire their coach because of it.  The Falcons defense is going to be much much better next year with the addition to another DE and DT.
