(Gulp) Here comes Aaron Rodgers. But the Falcons will still win

*** POSSIBLE VISUAL LEDE *** October 30, 2016 ATLANTA: — GAME WINNER — Falcons wide receiver Mohamed Sanu catches a touchdown pass from Matt Ryan past Packers defender Jake Ryan for a 33-32 victory in an NFL football game on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016, in Atlanta. Curtis Compton /ccompton@ajc.com

The good news: The Atlanta Falcons won’t have to leave town to qualify for the Super Bowl.

The bad news: They’ll have to beat Aaron Rodgers for the second time in 2 2/3 months to do it.

Historical note: The final game in the Georgia Dome will be for the NFC championship.

The sobering precedent: In the 2010 regular season, the Falcons beat the Packers in November in the Georgia Dome on a final scoring drive led by Matt Ryan and ended by Matt Bryant; come the playoffs, the Packers and Rodgers came here and won 48-21.

The sober voice of reason (or something close to it): The Packers just yielded 429 yards to Dallas, a team working behind a rookie quarterback, and saw the Cowboys override a 21-3 lead and forge a tie after trailing by 15 points through three quarters. If not for one final outrageous Rodgers throw, the game would have gone to overtime. (This not just is: Rodgers makes lots of outrageous throws; this one became an outrageous toe-drag catch by Jared Cook.)

We’ll have all week to consider the ramifications of the Packers’ victory in Arlington, but here’s my immediate thought: I still believe the easier path would have been to play Dallas down there for the NFC title, but it’s not as if the Falcons can’t beat the Packers here. They did it on Oct. 30, albeit by one point. As great as Rodgers is, he’s one man. The Falcons have the better team.

The Falcons put Future on the sidelines to mess with Russel Wilson.  Given the family drama headlines involving Aaron Rogers lately, perhaps we can get his family to show up to the game and stand on our sideline.  At least put a photo of his brother and dad on the jumbotron with the caption "Aaron...you should really call your family!" or "Aaron, this is not how you should treat family."  This way he sees the photo every time he checks the play clock.

Rodgers can't do it all by himself (sorry, nut-huggers), and we have the better team.  41-25 Falcons.

I see the birds by 17..We have the best offense and the best defense, bar none!!

The best thing i have seen by the birds? When a man goes down, next man up plays as well if not better than the man he replaces!!  Bring us your best G.B...you are stand ing in our way on our march to the Super Bowl!

Usually centers only get recognition when there's a bad snap, or sack up the middle. Credit Alex Mack with much of Ryan's success this year. He's like a pitcher in a baseball game. Every play begins with him. He's the only player on the field that touches the ball on virtually every play. Sing Ryan's praises but give Mack part of the credit. He's the best acquisition the Falcons have made in years.

We all know how great Aaron Rodgers is. He has been league MVP twice plus all the talking heads have been reinsuring us of how great Aaron Rodgers is.  The Atlanta Falcons have a great offense led by Matt Ryan.  Our defense has had problems stopping even so-so teams but we have been much better of late.  Atlanta Falcons stop GB and company in the NFCCG 38-34 with a late TD much like the first game.  Rise up Falcons!  Great execution and believing in your game.

The Cowboys are no slouch defensively and they couldn't get to Rodgers, how are the Falcons going to get to him? Give Rodgers that extra second or two and he can pick any defense apart.

I'll take Bug's 4 1/2 pts. and Go with GB.

Normally the defense has to double cover Julio and if Julio can't play that will make an extra DB available to cover the other receivers. It won't be easy either way.

By the way, I think Dallas blew the game clock strategy. They could have had a player fake an injury and the officials would have run off 10 more seconds on the clock before Dallas kicked the tying field goal. Maybe! Maybe not! If that's the case GB would have only had 34 seconds left when they got the ball.

@TideDawg  Yo man Julio not play? come on man I giggling at that one...the falcons will go through GB just like GB will go through Atlanta. I am betting that Atlanta has the ball "Last".

Everybody is an expert in there "Own Mind". The Falcons will be ready to play and so will GB. Since I am an expert in my "Own Mind", I will take the Falcons giving 4&1/2 plus the over.

The Falcons will lose. Sorry Bradley, too much Rogers,

too much Packers. Keep pulling for your dogs and work

toward better predictions..A little more research may help..

The Cowgirls were supposed to beat GB and look what happened.

Stop betting against Rogers. He's going to TORCH Atlanta.

Gotta pressure Rodgers.  It won't work every time, but need to hold GB to 27.  Falcons should be able to score 28.

GB scored 34 yesterday.  Falcons scored 36.

Of all the teams in pro football ......their special teams coaches can't seem to teach the receiving team blockers the difference between a players front and back. It would be interesting to know the percentage of kickoffs and punts that draw a penalty for blocking in the back. I think in practice they should have coverage guys and gunners wear jerseys with FRONT and BACK on them.

This game will be nerve wracking from beginning to end. Even if the falcons get a 3 score lead, we won't be able to stop worrying

We are better than the Packers at every position. We are healthy. We are going to win this game. My prediction: 39-27

@1337S0lja You aren't much into pro football are you?

Your prediction is worthless.

Relax---GB will not be able to stop Matt and Julio---they can outscore Aaron and get to the Super bowl---38-35!

Well, as always, it will boil down to penalties and turnovers!  We had only 2 five yard penalties against the SeaChickens (one of them VERY COSTLY, when that knot-head was off sides on a change of possession punt!) and we had zero turnovers!  The Packers just had a couple of penalties against the CowGirls and only 1 turnover (a costly interception by Rogers that led to a cowboy touchdown)

Maybe John Lewis will flip the coin.

If we can get that lead with two mins left-- I feel Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman with that run game can bring us home.

@DarlaLewis Lets just get the lead in the first two minutes and then "pile it on" the whole game.

It will be a shoot out.outcome depends on team with offensive rhythm using up the clock thus keeping the other offense off the field

@Doc3060 The only ones shot will be the Falcons and when shot , they will drop, sorry.

Oh hell yes it does!

Just look at Green Bay, and New England, and Pittsburgh.

If Atlanta wins it will not be by more then 4. It will be a nailbiter and I just pray our secondary can handle the test. The first matchup was no Cobb or Nelson.

I am scared because this QB makes plays like no other. It is very worrisome but for once I think it is Matt Ryan's time to play in the big game.

Eric_C

@candlin14 Falcons had no Coleman in the first game, and it looks like Jordy Nelson and Adams will be in rough shape if they even play.  Having said that, Clayborn had 2 sacks of Rodgers in the first game...he'll be  sorely missed.

@candlin14 Don't try to shut down Rodgers...just contain him and pressure him.  He will get some points...

I give Falcons a good shot if Julio can play. Lot of limping Packers by end of that game today and their defense was torched all day. Falcons should score 40

Mark I believe you are correct.  This game with GB could be one for the ages.  The over/under for this game could be 65-70 and rightfully so.  My preference was to face a Dallas team on the road rather than GB at home since they had a rookie qb and GB had Rodgers.  Congrats to the GB Packers who have an awesome history.  Let's RISE UP Falcons and bring the Birds an NFCCG victory!

The game will come down to officiating. Whoever the NFL wants in the Superbowl will win. PI and Defensive Holding on either side will decide the game. Will be a shootout!

Well if that is true then Atlanta is in trouble. There is no doubt the NFL would prefer Green Bay over Atlanta.

@Nate01 NFL execs want brady v. rodgers in the super bowl. GB will get all the big calls, like they did against dallas.

candlin14
candlin14

That is actually a brilliant comment and something Atlanta will have a hard time over coming. It's all about money and Goddell wants nothing more to see his two poster boys plus against each other. And we all know those two are Rodgers and Brady.

@SaulK @Nate01 Calls will have little to do with the Packers winning. They are better than the Falcons..
