Good riddance: Saban gives the brat Kiffin the boot

As noted in this space, Lane Kiffin coached the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl as if auditioning for another job — even though he actually had another job. Now he gets to devote himself full-time to it. Alabama just announced that Kiffin is leaving the program immediately. Bama still has a rather important game remaining, which tells us how fed up with L’il Kiffy the great Nick Saban had become.

Pete Thamel of SI.com recently accompanied Kiffin on a house-hunting trip in South Florida, where he’ll be head coach at Florida Atlantic. Over the course of that lengthy story, it became clear why Kiffin’s image took a turn for the better while being mostly muzzled as Alabama’s offensive coordinator. Because every time the man speaks for public consumption, he paints himself as an entitled brat.

Kiffin told Thamel that “fun wasn’t a word we use” at Alabama. He griped about how much money he was having to pay in taxes and alimony. He griped about living in Tuscaloosa. The latter problem has just been solved.

Saban was seen grousing toward Kiffin after Alabama’s first three-and-out against Washington. After it took Kiffin what seemed an eternity simply to hand the ball to Bama’s backs and the Crimson Tide had finally taken a 24-7 lead, the Tide got the ball with eight minutes remaining. Kiffin’s first call was a dropback pass, which fell incomplete. That’s where you run it three times and, if 10 yards aren’t forthcoming, you burn off 2 1/2 minutes and punt. Bama burned off 65 seconds. Terrible coaching.

ESPN is reporting that Kiffin was late to many things over bowl week in Atlanta, Thursday’s Media Day included. (He also missed the bus back to the team hotel.) Steve Sarkisian, next year’s coordinator, is already on staff,  but you get the impression that Saban would have dumped Kiffin if he’d had to call plays himself.

And you wonder why Power 5 schools were reluctant to make the guy a head coach.

Enough of the Childish banter, time for serious comments.  Predictions for the National Championship Game.

Clemson 28,

Bama 17 (sorry Willie)

@Big Wally I like Clemson since the Kiffin debacle...to be honest, I think Kiffin had a big part in the win last year....I like the heck out of willie but... I think the D's are even and I give Clemson the edge in the O. I'll sleep fine regardless of who wins....good luck to both.

Nobody's D stacks up to Bama's this season.

I think the "revenge factor" gives Clemson a mental edge--not so sure on the field, though.

100 more and Bradley gets a subscription to the AJC.

What a bonanza for Bradley. Comments approaching the 900 mark for a routine column about CFB.

Guess everyone's anticipating six-plus months without our favorite sport--and getting in their licks while they can.

Hopefully THE Falcons have a nice run that will keep us from total withdrawal.

BINGO!

Just think, they'll extend our season by a whole 'nother month if they keep winning.

We can only hope.

I was as a kid growing up. Been a Falcon fan since moving to ATL in the mid 80's.  Rooted for them in The Drive The  Fumble but they haven't done much since. Cincy had a fun run with Sam Wyche and The Icky Shuffle.

Otherwise, I've been a Falcon fan. Steve George, Back in Black, Chris Miller, the Dirty Birds , etc. etc. Steve George not so much.

Hoping for that, too.

And for the defense to step up just a little more to complement that explosive offense.

I've been a Falcons fan since their inception in '66. Lived in north Florida back then.

It's been a long, painful half-century-plus waiting for that first championship.

Barring a total collapse next week, we at least seem to be heading in the right direction this season. Of course, I've thought that way more than a few times before--and never been rewarded.

Let's see who didn't have any trouble scoring on Clemson this season:

Troy, NC State, Pitt, Louisville, FSU, VA Tech.

Even GT got a touchdown although just one.

You got nothing.

Hey little ten 31- 0 hi: 0. How did you do in your bowl game?

How did your conference perform in the bowls?

UGA won. SEC east won.

I think you lost.
