Cold numbers suggest a chilly finish for Georgia Tech

A complete list of teams Georgia Tech has beaten since routing Mississippi State on New Year’s Eve in the 2014 Orange Bowl: Alcorn State, Tulane, Florida State, Boston College, Mercer, Vanderbilt and Georgia Southern.

Georgia Tech’s record against Power Five teams (plus Notre Dame) since losing the Orange Bowl to Iowa on Jan. 5, 2010: 32-36.

Georgia Tech’s ACC record (counting conference title games) since the 2009 season: 27-27.

Number of ACC programs that have hired new coaches since the 2013 season: Seven.

Georgia Tech’s national ranking in total offense in 2014: 19th.

Georgia Tech’s national ranking in total offense this season: 107th.

Georgia Tech’s national ranking in total defense this season: 32nd.

Number of true road games Tech has played this season: One.

Number of true road games remaining: Three.

Date of Tech’s last victory in a true road game: Nov. 29, 2014.

Bottom line: Maybe you’re among those expecting a big finish from the Yellow Jackets. Me, I’m expecting more of the same. The 11-3 of 2014 was glorious. It was also a blip.

Has anyone noticed that no updates made to Dawgnation yet?

Bradley is just wishing and hoping GT finishes with a worse record than his beloved Dawgs.  Look like Kirby is not the 2nd coming they thought he would be.

Bradley will always be a dog homer. His second office is in Athens

on the UGA campus! His reports are all cold and off the MARK.

Chilly waters for Bark Madly going forward, sorry..

Maybe MB needs to spend more time ripping the Dogs who lost to Vanderbilt and quit looking for statistics to support yet another negative article about the GA Tech Football program.  The AJC needs to reel him in.

@eidsonb
@eidsonb

I don't know which is worse, Bradley and the AJC's hey look Tech sucks so as to take the spotlight off of Musechamp 2 that UGA just had to hire or the ramblings of people who really have no clue about Tech and the football program.  As noted below, the school is not going to get rid of the math requirements.  We as alumni need to support the program by buying tickets so that CPJ can hire the staff he needs as well as the upgrades to the facilities.  As far as all this talk of the glory days, CPJ is the SECOND, by percentage, winningest coach in the history of the program.

I don't understand the unsolicited negativity by Bradley. Was 2009 a blip too? Yes, 2015 wasn't great but we were competitive in a lot of close games.  I think we end up finishing 7-5 this year with an outside chance at 8-4.  Too bad Bradley just wants to poopoo the Tech program after showing progress over 2015.  I hope he realizes that this is unnecessary.

@GTgrad2000 Grad 2000. It's tough to accept what the Tech football program is, compared to what it used to be. I remember when Tech was a proud football program and didn't accept, or expect those type of seasons. You've got a 7-5 or 8-4 coach that should be coaching a Division 2 team not in the ACC. Force PJ to get an OC with new ideas for big boy football or fire him. And don't start talking about that year they were good and won the Orange bowl. Those days are gone. I can agree this is a year when Tech can beat Ga. but it's going to be your last chance. If that keeps PJ around you'd better hope Tech loses.

Well, you keep scheduling big time opponents and writing as if 1990 is right around the corner. Truth is, the talent on the football and basketball side is enemic. We're not getting out coached as much as we're getting out recruited. When we line up against Clemson, it looks like a division III school against Alabama. Talent is what wins football games. Plus a little coaching.

Ga Tech is neither the Tide nor the Dogs and will not be in the future.  Nor does the average alum want it to be.

Watching parts of the VT-Miami game and they mentioned all the great QB's in the conference maybe the top and didn't mention Thomas who a few years ago everyone was talking about.  Let's admit Press doesn't like GT sometimes until we prove it on the field. The completion has improved no question through recruiting with the major change their.  If Tech can get their recruiting year in and year out in the top 30's-40's it should help.  GS is not ACC but let's don't forget they almost beat us two years ago and did beat UF if not mistaken. The score last night is not indicative of how Miami also pulled even and took control of the game. GT has to take one game at a time. Tech's defense is looking better which is good.

Hey Mark Bradley and all other Dwags.. do you like apples, You just lost to Vandy on homecoming, and Tech blew their doors off by 30+. how do you like them... go cry about your misgivings at a Waffle House confessional booth. Mutts

This is the most blatant article pandering to idiot UGA fans to give them something to feel good about since their season is in the toilet and will continue to get worse. All you halfwit knuckledraggers know it to be true in your mutt hearts. I have seen better journalism in a Hustler from 1986. Blah blah blah, Mark Bradley blah blah blah. Whatever gets you UGA rednecks through the night

How shocking.  Bradley with yet another negative blog about GT.  The thing is.  The triple option works when you have all the right pieces in place.  It's been proven.  However; don't let a few of those stats fool you.  That 32nd in total defense is a little off.  Not when you put other factors into play.  Things like YPP, TOP, 3rd down conv. etc;  When you do all those factors, GT is more like 94.   The defense benefits from having an offense that runs the ball and eats up time.  If the offense has a bad game, it's guaranteed our defense will not keep us in the game.   While I tend to disagree with Bradley on many things, I think he nailed a lot points.

If we have a remote desire to make a bowl, we better beat Duke and UVA.  Because the other games are not as easy.

Yes, that includes UGA, boys and girls.  UGA seems to step up well enough when we play.

So, GT fans... Don't go bowl frenzy quite yet.

OldBlindDawg

The truth: Kirby is rebuilding the UGA football program. At present he is playing a lot of young guys (possibly the most in the country) and the growing pains are infact painful. Give him 2 years on the recruiting front and then we can discuss the UGA program at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

The other truth: GT has been left behind in the ACC. The conference has improved mightily since GT last had success. When CPJ is finally replaced it will take 4 possibly 5 years to refresh the roster.

Bottom line 4 - 5 years AFTER CPJ departs plus however many years left on his contract ( what is it 4 or 5 years) = nearly a decade of well deserved suffering.

Oh yeah one of those Orange Bowl appearances was vacated wasn't it? GT was caught cheating if my memory serves me.

@OldBlindDawg Waste of time post to a waste of time article and then you actually make us all dumber by your lack of mental follow through. The rhetoric now is that Kirby needs his own players to succeed. I guess the multitude of top ten recruiting classes in a row are not enough to beat Vandy and also almost get waxed by Nichols state fighting voodoo haitians or whatever they are, and oh yeah get destroyed and embarrassed by Ole Miss. Woulda coulda shoulda, blah blah blah. you guys are the biggest crybaby losers in all of football. Winning nothing of any caliber at all to merit the attitude. I yield nothing to you bunch of hacks. If my memory serves me correctly blind dwag, you guys have been left behind in the SEC for a while now, then again I'm not all that smart I guess, just obviously still smarter than you.

Paul Johnson "apologists"?  What does that mean?  Most of us who actually graduated from Tech and support it financially both in academics and in athletics support our coach.  I wish he would win more, but I sure don't want the school to change it's curriculum so he can.

And I sure as heck don't need to apologize to anyone.

My first recollections of football are something like "toe meets rubber" a coach who punted on third down, losing to Steve Spurrier in the Orange Bowl, and then University of Georgia emerged as the premier college football team in Georgia. There was new life breathed into the Tech program under Coach Curry and Coach Ross brought the Jackets back to the top of the heap as 1990 co-champions. Although I was drawn in by that Siren posing as a dog I never gave up on the jackets. Owned me a sharp white cap with the royal blue GT letters blazoned on the front. Ah but, come Saturday it was the "Red Clay Hounds" that pulled me to the front of the television. I'm not going to go into all of the discontentment I see inside Sanford Stadium, but from here on out I plan to ride on the Ramblin Wreck and "To Hell with Georgia!"

I'll let the season play out and see what transpires.

CPJ isn't going anywhere until after '17 thanks to another bad contract extension by the now departed Bobinski.

Our new AD will set things right.  If CPJ isn't cutting it he will make the change, when appropriate.

@Born2Buzz 3-9 isn't appropriate. And that was last year. And the offensive stats are getting worse.

HenrycoJacket

@swimfin2 @Born2Buzz Losing to Vandy on homecoming is downright inappropriate if you ask me (and you did). Tech beat Vandy by over 30 points and you have the cojones to talk about tech this year? I guess you guys need a few more years to rebuild after the mess that St. Richt left you guys, eh? Maybe you need some time? I think you about as adept at reality as you are at beating Stephen Hawking at anything other than volleyball. Have fun losing to Florida again, and Auburn, and TECH...mutt

From the looks of the last couple of hires on the BB side, I wouldn't be so eager to see PJ go.

swimfin2

These are the stats the johnson apologists don't want you to know and see. That's why they are on here name calling. They must be family members or on his payroll. Any true gt fan would realize the obvious. The offense doesn't work anymore and the coaching is atrocious and he needs to be fired. Let's not forget the brilliant 4th down call at gt's 34 against pitt .  What an idiot.

2013 season 37 points ppg 440 yards per game 3740 rushing 1548 passing

2014 season. 37 points ppg ..469 yards per game. 4337 rushing. 1757 passing. Top 20 in country

2015 season. 29 ppg 378 yards per game. 1462 passing 3074 rushing.

Why so angry TO? Who cares that he and CPJ do not get along? Chip already burned bridges with Kirby. It is what writers do and the fact he got your juices flowing sells and makes him worth his check. Let it roll like water off a duck's @$$ .

@twelveofthirteen It's probably Paul's secretary. Doing everything to discredit rational facts and calling those who point out the porblems trolls, mutts etc. Because he has no argument. The numbers speak for themselves. Ask most tech people and they agree it's time for a change. Just not the losers who live on this website and are probably on the pj payroll. They don't want him canned cause then omg they would have to find a new job and maybe move!

HenrycoJacket
HenrycoJacket

@swimfin2 @twelveofthirteen Maybe they can hire someone who has never been a head coach before, but, just feels right. Hey look how that worked out! Was it fun losing to Vandy on homecoming? how about the epic Stalingrad fight with the Nichols State fighting derelicts?

So it's clear the offense is not working anymore. The trend is lower. This offense goes with the run game yet the passing is becoming more of a total part of the offense while the rushing years are decreasing. Last year, PJ gave the excuse of injuries for the slumping offense. What's the excuse this year? Bottom line is the offense isn't working anymore like it did in the past. 2 years is a trend. Not an anomaly.  And I repeat, this is the best qb to run the offense!

Mark, You are an excellent writer. I look forward to reading all of your columns I am not a Georgia native and do not have a dog or dawg in the UGA/GT rivalry. It is very evident, however, that you have lost all impartiality when writing about Paul Johnson. I do not know Johnson, but its clear he does not have the financial or talent resources found at UGA. Please find another target. You are too professional to fall back on constant criticism of Johnson to fill your column.

@Mitch74 Why? Because he presents stats which are fact? That's his job. He did the same thing with Richt. That's his job. He will do the same with smart if necessary after a bigger sample size becomes available. Gt fans are just insecure crybabies. Their coach just isn't getting it done anymore. The numbers I posted speak for themselves. It's time for a change.

swimfin2
swimfin2

The problem is clear. The offense doesn't work anymore. Two straight season of well below mediocrity is a trend. The offense use to rack up 400-500 yards a game. Total offense so far this year 107th in the country. Out of what? 120 teams? That's pathetic. It's pathetic when gt has to get bailed out with the passing game to win. We were told that this is the best gt qb to run this offense. LOL 3 wins last year. 4 so far this year. And duke looks like they are turning things around with the close game against Louisville on the road. And they also have a bye this week. We know what happens to a pj offense when a team gets time to prepare. I see 4 more losses this season. Maybe they squeak out a win against Va. They surely aren't beating unc and vt on the road. And the ga game will be close but another loss like last year. Comparing similar opponents and saying we beat them is stupid. It's not the nfl. And gt runs this retarded offense that if a team isn't prepared, as vandy clearly wasn't, then it works. It use to look good 10-11 games a year. Now it's down to 2-3. And some are saying we beat Ga Southern by double digits. Good grief. The line was 10.5 Congrats gt did what vegas expected.

HenrycoJacket
HenrycoJacket

@swimfin2 @TOJacket Facts are that UGA lost to Vandy on homecoming and GT beat them like small children (not that I condone that type of behavior).

TOJacket
TOJacket

So Vandy can beat aTeam with Chubb, and Sony but not one with no 4-5 stars and an "offense that doesn't work? Yea.....let's get a new coach like UGA......that's going to go over like a stool in the pool.

swimfin2
swimfin2

@TOJacket The facts speak for themselves. You idiots lauded PJ over his brilliant option and play calling and it's been dismal the past 2 years. Yep keep that broken outdated nonfunctioning offense. Most gt fans are realizing the obvious. Not the die hard pj pumper trolls who only care about his job security.

swimfin2

It's a joke they still have this clown coaching with the dismal performance the past 2 years. 3-9? Really? Pathetic and it looks like 5 wins at best this year.  This offense just doesn't work anymore. And it's boring as hell to watch. Gailey was fired for results better than this. At least the bowl streak kept going under him. And half of those years were with just 11 games and not the added cupcake PJ gets.

Dawgs DID fire Richt. He left a mess for Kirby. No QB, NO WR's, piss poor OL, 5'8 DB's trying to cover 6'4" SEC wideouts, no kickers. At least we're trying to get better. You guys have a new AD. Is he a mans man or a puppet? If he's a puppet. Johnson will be there forever. Who at Tech thinks it will get better?
