You call it: Quinn/Shanahan/Ryan or Koetter/Smitty/Jameis?

Because orange is the new black. (Chris O’Meara/AP photo)

The three most important figures in an NFL game: The guy in charge of the offense, the guy in charge of the defense and the quarterback.

The Atlanta Falcons have: Dan Quinn, a head coach with a defensive background who presumably has some say over his in-game defense; offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and quarterback Matt Ryan.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have: Dirk Koetter, a head coach just promoted from OC who will still call plays; defensive coordinator Mike Smith and quarterback Jameis Winston.

Three of these six — Smith, Koetter and Ryan — worked for the Falcons and nearly won an NFC title in January 2013. Also of note: The Falcons and Bucs open against each other at the doomed Dome on Sunday.

Enough blather. One question: If you were an NFL owner, which threesome would you rather have? Thanks in advance for the input.

What's new Falcons? Apparently nothing. I'm a little surprised but not much. The problem is becoming much clearer with each passing game. Blank, Ditmitrof, front office, and maybe Quinn and Smith are not a winning formula. It's hard to tell if Quinn is doing his thing or whether he's been kneecapped. Regardless, nothing's changed. Well, I changed, changed the channel fairly quickly. I'm just tired of watching the same ole failing formula.

the Quinn/Shanahan/Ryan trio is 0-3 against the Bucs

Falcons get the ball back with less than two minutes to go and no timeouts.  Matt Ryan runs out of downs before he runs out of time.  Errant throws to Julio and Sanu  waste two downs and the drive dies with yet another tip.  We got a six four  QB who constantly gets his passes tipped at the line of scrimmage.

My prediction.  Bucs win,  Koetter and Smith take leaks on Falcons logo at midfield. Dimitroff seen closely following Blank blaming loss on Quinn.

Can we swap owners too.  Malcom Glazer (deceased) for Blank?

The Falcons suck as usual, always have, always will..Too many morons in front office!!

Too many holes too fill on both sides of the ball!!  I still don't know why they need a new stadium..A new stadium does not make a NEW winning team!!

According to a Wall Street Jrnl article this morning, the Falcons spend the highest percentage of salary cap on offense in the NFL.  And they still struggle to score 20pts/game.  I was/am a Koetter fan but I know that Quinn wanted a more balanced offense in order to keep the defense off the field.   It just doesn't fit the skill set of your highest paid player.  I know this is fantasy land but we should trade Ryan and Julio to Jacksonville for Bortles and Robinson.  Get a young mobile QB with strong arm....Much more raw than Ryan but also more upside.  Like I said, I know it's fantasy land given salary cap issues and difficulty of trading in the NFL but if I were king....

Bucs win.

I'd take the Tampa 3some as long as Shanahan is our OC.  All you Ryan bashers remember back to when Ryan ran the no huddle and how effective he was calling his own plays.  Now he is in a horrible offense for his skill-set.

On defense, The best way to beat Tampa is to confuse the second year QB Winston and not give him time to get thru his reads.  Atlanta inexplicably didn't do nearly enough to address the worst pass rush in the league last year.  I hope a 36 year old Freeney can help but this will be year 16 in the NFL and 31 other GMs thought he wasn't worth the risk.   For the first time of many, a QB has a career game against Atlanta.

On offense, Tampa is a horrible match-up for us.  They have strong DTs that will again this year destroy plays with their interior pressure.  Mack was a great addition but all Tampa has to do is blitz a man up the middle and that leaves those two DTs being blocked in man on man blocking and we lose.

The coaches are a wash.  Take Ryan over the Rapist/Thief QB of Tampa.

Not saying Smitty didn't make his mistakes, but MR2 has never looked better than he did with Koetter.  This all comes down to TD and his complete inability to build a competitive and deep roster.

It comes down to players: Tampa has a much more talented QB, and a better roster overall.  Better rosters make better coaches.  Whoddathunkit?

what's the definition of insanity?  doing the samething over again and expecting a different result.  and insanity is expecting the Falcons to have a winning season with this group of players, general manager and owner.  Sorry DQ you'll be on the hot seat after this season when you go 3 & 13.

Bucs seem to be a media sweetheart pick, but I'm not sure why.  I do, however have zero faith in Kyle Shanahan to put together an offense based on MR2's strengths.  Remember Greg Knapp trying to make Vick a West Coast QB? Oy!

Hopefully Sanu can develop into the #2 WR that Roddy once was.  Falcons 19 (4 FG), Bucs 17

@PalmBeachFalcon Four FG's.......that's a fourfecta?....I think the home crowd helps the Birds win a close one!....23-21

@TheFalconJedi They didn't do that last year.....both games the Falcons had a chance to win?.....is the "Force" not with ya?

The Falcons have a few surprises up their sleeve don't be shocked when they take it to the Bucs. Under Quinn the emphasis will be four quarters of football. Nationally most of the football  gods think Tampa is on an uptick.

If you're a Falcon fan why would want to go back to the past? I think it's an unfair question.

This is no choice, Kotter, Smith and Ryan where able to get us to the NFC Championship game, but ultimately failed as a trio. Kotter, Smith and Winston our together for the first year. Smith was a good head coach, but the defense was his weak link for the 7 years he was here. The argument can be made it was the weak link because Dimitroff was picking the players, but I am sure Smith had some say into who Dimitroff was picking. Quinn seems to bring a more intense style on defense and besides the San Fran game, has a had coach he made better decisions than Smith did in his last year as coach. It all goes to players, coaching in any league can make a difference in one game, but over all success depends on the talent. Kotter has OC was good but he had Juilo, Roddy, Turner, and Gonazlez when they went to the NFC Championship. Winston is talented but lets see how he is this year. If you have one game to coach, I am not picking either one, I am picking Nick Saban!

Shanahan's offensive strategy of running around in circles and then falling down, won't work too well on Sunday.

I'd also call the Quinn/Koetter choice a tie. Shannahan as OC or Smith as a DC??? I'd take Smith all day. Winston/Ryan???? Uber athletic with a strong arm or not??? Hmmmmmm...

The Falcons were beyond lucky to start the season 5-0. That can be attributed to other team pooping the bed just as much as the Falcons winning. This team is not very good. Pre-season or not; Matt Ryan continues to look like the same QB as  last year. I haven't seen one thing that has made me think anything else. He has turned the ball over in the redzone and looks uncomfortable out there. He will have a much improved line with better weapons around him this year so we will see. That defense scares no one. Maybe after they go 7-9 this year Dimitroff will finally get his butt canned.

Gman84

Seemed obvious to most that when TD stayed, the Falcons were just spackeling over their problems. 2 years later, they are the same, or worse.

ZERO pass = ZERO chance.

When Smitty had an O line and a defense, he won. When Dimitroff depleted the roster/wasted draft picks on guys like Hageman, etc...he didn't win. That's why the key to Quinn's success is that he himself controls the roster.

Ryan is a better qb than Jameis and he should be. Jameis is just in his second year. He will get better with experience, but he already has the ability to make plays on his own. Ryan doesn't and never will.

The days of the statue qb in the NFL are coming to an end. Jameis, Cam, Russell Wilson are the future of NFL quarterbacks.

The Tampa WR matchup with Falcon CB's will tell the story. Not only for this game but throughout the season. Jackson V Alford. Go Falcons !!  (hope)

If Tampa comes in and wins this game, the look on Arthur's face will be priceless.

When Smitty had players he won. Dimitroff didn't restock the roster very well, especially on the defensive side. I think Quinn can win. Not impressed with his OC, though.

The weakest link for the Falcons is Quinn/Shananhan.

Jdub2500
Jdub2500

As much as it pains me to admit it...Bucs have the advantage. Ryan has shown no improvement and if he has shown anything since Quinn/Shannahan arrived it's been regression. Smith was one of the most successful coaches in franchise history & Quinn took a team that was 5-0 and missed the playoffs. All signs point to Bucs success here, not Birds.

@DaltonbywayofBickley @Jdub2500 Yes, i know he was record-wise, but Reeves actually got the team to the Super Bowl, so that's why I said "one of the best" instead of the best.
