Is picking Georgia Tech sixth in the Coastal really so crazy?

The assembled media at the ACC’s Operation Kickoff have picked Georgia Tech to run sixth in the seven-team Coastal Division. Paul Johnson might scoff at this — he scoffs at everything — but is picking a team that just finished last to finish next-to-last really indefensible?

Boilerplate disclaimer: Tech tends to outperform its projection, having done so most notably in 2014, when it was tabbed fifth in its division but went 11-3 and won the Orange Bowl. The Yellow Jackets were also tabbed to win the Coastal last season; they went 3-9 (1-7 in conference play).

Tech had a rough 2015 schedule, yes. The new slate doesn’t include Notre Dame or Florida State. But let’s recall that FSU was the one ACC team the Jackets managed to beat, albeit in astonishing fashion. They lost close home games to North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech. Those three games will be played on the road this time.

Of Tech’s 12 games last season, five were played against teams that would fire — or had fired, as was the case with Miami and Al Golden — their head coach. Three of those new coaches are in the Coastal, which bears a much different look than it did when last the Jackets won the division.

I’m on record as having picked Tech to go 7-5, but I thought hard about making that 6-6. I know Tech has Justin Thomas to play quarterback, but it had him all of last season except for the final three quarters at Miami and still went 1-9 against Power Five (plus Notre Dame) opposition. I know Jacket backers have already written off last season as an utter fluke. I’m not sure it was.

Indeed, if you look at Tech’s seasons since 2009, here’s what you see: 6-7, 8-5, 7-7, 7-6, 11-3 and 3-9. I ask: Which seems the outlier?

what to call a 6-6 season ?  More mediocrity, or a tremendous 100 % improvement. Should have gone for 2 coach package deal with Memphis.

If the line blocks like last year 3-9 again.  If it is greatly improved you are looking at 7-5 or 8-4.

My standard prediction for any GT season is 8-4.  After last season I'm lowering that down to 7-5.   Depends on how injured we are as the season progresses.

5 wins might be a stretch....Johnson is terible....roof is worse....Tech has proven it does not want to win....Spend some money get a coach....

GT will be back to 6+ this year - "it is what it is..."

People still come in here and post I guess. Why? I've been telling you for years Johnson should be fired and you all come to his defense. We stunk last year and will be just as bad this year.

Sports writers always choose Tech to underachieve and put the "disappointment Dawgs" in the top 20?.......the only thing the dawgs have been for a decade is be average. CPJ always, and I will repeat, always does more with less....so suck it Bradley!

GT 7-5 in 2016. The QB has to throw the ball better to get beyond those 7 wins.

Coach Bryant had it right about sportswriters....

Mark, please excuse me, but aren't you overstating the obvious? I thought you guys were paid to look beyond all that and give us more in-depth analysis. It seems easy to rip the Jackets, sitting atop your high horse, while you lavish praise on the Dogs. Here's hoping you're all wet and the Dogs get crushed by the Jackets in November. Then maybe you'll find something better to write in your column.

Go Jackets!

Can anybody pick anything about any college team with any amount of certainty?  Answer:  No.  But he is paid to do so.

@Bradley - There  is more parity in the ACC Coastal than most other subdivisions in football. In the last five seasons no school has repeated as regular  season champion (UNC, GT, Duke, GT/UNC/Miami tie, and VT). Only UVA hasn't had at least a tie for first place in the last five years.

Is picking Tech sixth crazy?In June 2015  you picked Tech to go 9-3.  What we do know is that you and the rest of the media aren't very good with predictions.

7-5 on average is what GT'S always been.  nothing new here no matter what year, decade or century we speak of.

@rallo This statement is moronic.  Tech was a premier program from the beginning of college football until the 1960's.  30th in all-time winning percentage and 17th in all-time wins.  Learn something about the game.

Bradley, if you knew the importance of an offensive line, your

comments wouldn't sound so stupid.. You don't, they are!!

Paul Johnson doesn't know who you are either.. Jacket fans

don't care who you are..

Yes, Bradley you know it's crazy. Picking the dawgs sixth

in the SEC would be a better pick...Picking the Jackets

2nd in the Coastal , money pick.. Now go do Smart's errands..

3-9, obviously! Mark, did coach Johnson forget how to coach in one season? No! When will you learn? Keep doubting him.

It's not so much about what Tech is going to to, it's about their chances relative to the rest of the Coastal. Tech has an uphill climb, but worse than VT, and Miami with new coaches? Duke was a flash in the pan two years ago...GT is going to head the same way as Duke and be worse off?

Paul Johnson is a good enough coach to win at Tech. He just won't win big because he recruits so poorly.

@SupersizeThatOrder-mutt @DaltonbywayofBickley They fixed that by introducing made up majors for their mouthbreathing athletes. It just comes down to the fact that Tech stinks, their facilities are subpar, and the likelihood that you'll be robbed at gunpoint walking to class.

@bigmacondawg @SupersizeThatOrder-mutt @DaltonbywayofBickley

OMG, you're even more stupid than I thought.  How many athletes at the cesspool have to take calculus or even applied mathematics?  The easiest major at Tech is business administration, and since Tech's business administration school is ranked higher nationally than the one in Athens, I would say that immediately qualifies it for being harder.  Do you really think that housing and general studies and the plethora of other meaningless majors at Georgia are as difficult as those at Tech?  You really are an ignorant redneck, aren't you?

@Harlemdawg As they say at Tech stupid.....getting in isn't near as hard as getting out. Go put that Housing or African history degree to work....LOL, bunch of losers.

Boy Mark, these techies sure are sensitive. I guess a fan base takes on a coach's personality as well as a team. Anyway "supersize". Your handle is a misnomer because I do believe it's been more difficult to get into uga than tech for several year's now.

SupersizeThatOrder-mutt

@DaltonbywayofBickley

And can you name me any coach at Tech who has consistently recruited better than Johnson?  Tech is a hard sell to HS athletes, most of whom are not interested in the concept of Student-Athlete, or, if they are, are not interested in the curriculum at Tech.  Losing kids because of that is not something that Paul Johnson or any other coach can fix.

SupersizeThatOrder-mutt

@Madasshatter @SupersizeThatOrder-mutt @DaltonbywayofBickley

"Made up majors"? Are you really that stupid or are you just a typical mutt fan?  The only made-up majors offered anywhere around here are in Athens, where the on-campus crime rate is higher than the Tech on-campus crime rate.  "sup-par" facilities?  Yeah, you really are stupid.  Tech has some of the best athletic facilities in the country....Olympic swimming pool, top-class basketball arena and practice facility, indoor football practice field (does Georgia have one yet?).  I could go on, but you're too stupid to recognize truth, so I will stop now.
