Pro Football Focus: The Falcons’ roster has risen to mediocrity

Say hi to the partial architect of a so-so roster. (AP Photo/David Goldman)

Being adjudged as the owners of the NFL’s 19th-best — or, put another way, the 14th-worst — roster would, in ordinary circumstances, be no cause for celebration. But it was only last season that Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus, via a post on ESPN Insider, ranked the Atlanta Falcons’ roster the NFL’s second-worst. (Or 31st-best.)

This year, the same Monson places the Falcons, who apparently aren’t quite the same, at No. 19. Let joy be unconfined!

Monson’s upgraded assessment should not be confused with effusive praise. He rips the Falcons for signing wide receiver Mohamed Sanu — this has been a consistent PFF plaint, you should know — and calls them “thin at linebacker and in the secondary only (Desmond) Trufant is able to consistently win his matchups.”

Under “starters who should be upgraded,” Monson lists Sanu, cornerback Jalen Collins, tight end Jacob Tamme and linebackers Paul Worrilow and Sean Weatherspoon. (Three of those were acquired — or re-acquired, in Weatherspoon’s case, since Dan Quinn arrived.) Monson does, however, list Vic Beasley Jr. and Grady Jarrett as a “cause for optimism” in a front four of “solid but unspectacular players.”

The Flowery Branch rallying cry: “Today No. 19, tomorrow the world! (Or, failing that, No. 18!)”

Recent efforts:

Muhammad Ali is dead. Words fail.

Muhammad Ali: The greatest, and not just as a boxer.

Pigskin Pickin’ 2016: Georgia goes 10-2, Tech 7-5.

Can't wait for training camp to start, because I find the practices much more exciting than the games. Was hoping they have a joint practice with another team because last joint practice they had was with Tennessee and that set the stage for the season. It appears to me that management is only able to build a team that is capable of beating other teams that are average or below. Just sayin.

Pro Football Focus...  I think the conversation begins and ends with the mention of that group.  It's a tool for the media and fun for the fans to look at and talk about during the long offseason.. nothing else.  No NFL coach consults PFF when deciding upon a roster move anymore than Nick Saban looks at how many stars some recruiting guru has given a kid he is recruiting.  If we are to take Sam Monson's word(PFF Writer) he would have had us believing Tom Brady was no longer an elite QB back in 2014!  I wish writers had to live with their "personnel decisions" like coaches do!  Let their employment for this year be based on the accuracy of what they wrote last year!  Yes...  I admit it.  I'm a coach who has had some terrible experiences with the local media at some of my coaching stops over the years!!!  It looks really easy from the pressbox.

Relax---thomas has everything under control! He's a genius! Remember, he used to be in new england!! He's working a deal to trade 5 more draft picks next year for another wide receiver--julio getting old!

Too bad Mark Bradley can't seem to rise from mediocrity... Time for some new blood, AJC... Bradley and Schultz REALLY bring down what's left of the sports page...

4 wins in 2013, 6 wins in 2014, 8 wins 2015, so guess that means 10-6!

8-8 last year playing several teams' backup QB.  They won't get that kind of luck this year.  Look for a 6-10 record and lot more spin coming from Flowery Branch.

@Big Wally They well might be an improved team but with a same or worse record.

It's easy to  critique ....anyone can do it....But ask Sam Monson  to ask who he would of brought in and , guess what, the crickets can be heard for miles... typical idiot.

@DaltonbywayofBickley I know, right? I used him on my fantasy team last season in a pinch and he came through for me. He's not a bad TE.

OK, some idiot says the roster has improved, blasts the current roster and hasn't seen a game yet. Wow. Dude from ESPN Insider got a nice crystal ball. Isn't that why they play the game? Oh, by the way, politics is on another page.

The worst GM in the league is still employed by this clueless franchise and cursed city. No wonder why winning a championship in this city is about as hard as Obama saying "Radical Islam".

@candlin14 Does everything have to be political? I turn to sports because it's a nice respite from the circus of American (and world) politics, and now I have to be faced with it on sports pages well? I'm all for your right to have your opinion and share it as much as you'd like, but I wish you'd express the political stuff in a more appropriate forum.
