Magazine alert: UGA is picked second in its division; Tech is not

Sony Michel scores against Georgia Tech last season. (Hyosub Shin/AJC photo)

It’s that time again. The college football magazines are taking up rack space at a supermarket near you. This year I bought the Sporting News College Football Preview, which I do without fail, and also ESPN’s College Football 2016. (I passed on Lindy’s and Athlon. So many mags, so little time.)

Sporting News picks Georgia No. 19 in the nation and No. 2 in the SEC East, behind Tennessee; it picks Georgia Tech No. 4 in the ACC Coastal, behind North Carolina, Miami and Virginia Tech.

ESPN’s Mark Schlabach (esteemed former colleague) picks Georgia No. 13 in the nation, although ESPN’s Football Power Index has the same Bulldogs at No. 9. (FPI also has LSU No. 1, with Alabama No. 6.) The Worldwide Leader slots Georgia No. 2, likewise behind the Big Orange, in the SEC East. Tech is ranked 46th nationally by FPI and fifth — Pittsburgh is also placed ahead of the Yellow Jackets — in the ACC Coastal.

Here’s the thing I like about ESPN’s magazine: For $7.99 plus tax, you get three different national champs. FPI has the aforementioned LSU. Schlabach has Alabama. Brad Edwards has Clemson. Edwards also has Washington(!!!!) in the College Football Playoff.

But enough, at least for the moment. As we speak, I’m in the process of compiling the wildly unpopular annual Pigskin Pickin’, in which I give you my long-range thoughts, such as they are, on the season ahead. (It will be available soon on myAJC.) Spoiler alert: Last year I picked Tech and Georgia to lose seven games between them; this year I pick them to lose seven games between them. Slightly different distribution, though.

Super fun reading:

Ole Miss’ troubles aren’t nearly at an end.

Baylor is found guilty of unconscionable human behavior.

ESPN: Tech’s Paul Johnson ranks 12th in the ACC in job stability.

The grand SEC had a really bad Draft Thursday.

It’s April, and Paul Johnson is already ticked.

Memo to the SEC: Do not challenge Jim Harbaugh on Twitter.

Jim Harbaugh’s spring fling frosts the SEC.

The last time UGA won anything John Travolta was wearing that white suit. Still go mine in the closet.

If they're picked to come in 2nd then that means 4th?

We ALLL know that Eason and Smart are going to win 19 SEC and 7 National Championships in their first year together.

I am sure that Bradley is disappointed that the MAgazine didn't

pick GT to finish higher than the dogs.. Bradley has always been

supportive of all things involved with GT sports...........................

The same magazine that picks dogs big every year. The dogs

will in fact finish fourth or fifth in the east. GT should win their

division straight up!! Go back to your office at the UGa sports

complex and earn your keep Bradley!!!

@LOGS1973 one thing they do seem to get right is UGA beating Tech every year.

If the GT oline can learn to block then maybe we'll win a few.  However, if it is anything like last year 3-8 here we come.

UGA should be interesting - lots of talent, but can the new guy do anything with it.  Is he Saban or Muschamp?

@AtlantanITP

I'm solid Muschamp.

He's given up 40 plus in the last two NC's.

@96JB  It was the rain.  We were always the only team in the history of football to have to play games in the rain under Richt.

If Chubb is healthy and Eason is 40% better than Lambert, Dawgs could be special. We get Tenn at home.....And Tenn has got to beat some good teams. Don't think the Dawgs will hit the field like they drank a bottle of Nyquil 2 hours before kickoff under this staff.

@OH:IO all those high round draft picks and you still couldn't win your division in the Big 10.

If Richt were still around we'd be a preseason Top 10 lock and several pundits would be picking us to win the East, just like every year.  We were always overrated under Richt.  I like being underrated under Smart much better.  It's going to be a lot more fun.

@FineousMcDirtyBird I've never seen much evidence of this mythical UGA fan who goes around predicting national titles every year.  You can probably find them in the same place you would find a unicorn or the lochness monster.  It's a complete fabricated hoax dreamed up by loser haters who are completely owned by all things UGA.  What a miserable existence that must be for you.

@dawg fan  No matter how the trade publications rate the Bulldogs, Dawg fans will always overrate them more. Enjoy the yearly crushing disappointment.
