ESPN: Tech’s Paul Johnson ranks 12th in the ACC in job stability

“You guys hearing much about my job status?” (AP Photo/David Goldman)

Travis Haney of ESPN Insider is ranking the Power Five coaches in terms of job stability. Among the 14 ACC coaches, Haney rates Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson 12th — behind North Carolina State’s Dave Doeren and Boston College’s Steve Addazio, ahead of nobody else.

Note: This isn’t a ranking of the leagues best coaches; it’s a measure of how secure these coaches are in their current jobs. Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher is ranked 10th because Haney — and not just Haney — wonders if he’d leave for LSU should the Tigers get around to firing Les Miles this time.

As for Johnson: Nobody seriously thinks he’ll leave for another job. When you go 3-9, you’re no longer flavor of the month. Although it was, we must note, only 17 months ago that Johnson and Tech went 11-3 and won the Orange Bowl, an achievement flavorful enough to earn him a contract extension through 2020.

Haney on Johnson:

Other coaches have pointed out that Johnson’s patented option offense, not exactly the sexiest scheme out there, creates a narrower margin for error. “Fans like to see the ball in the air,” a Power Five coach once told Insider. This is an important, crossroads-type season for Georgia Tech.

I’m not sure Johnson would get fired even if Tech goes 3-9 again, not that I expect Tech to go 3-9 again. (I don’t expect it to go 11-3, either. I’d say 7-5 or thereabouts.) For the record, that contract extension included a buyout, but not a Paul-Hewitt-never-ending-buyout. As noted by esteemed colleague Ken Sugiura:

The new contract differs from the previous deal in that Johnson will not be paid the full value of the contract if he is fired. He would receive the full remaining value of the 2015, 2016 and 2017 seasons, if terminated before then, but the buyout would be reduced to $1 million per season for the final three years.

When last we saw Johnson, he was grousing over his team’s performance in its spring game. Maybe you’d interpret that as a coach who’s feeling the pressure of a “crossroads-type season.” Or maybe you’d note that it’s Paul Johnson and he’s always miffed about something.

For God's Sake !!!!!  Fire this Jerk.  Mark Richt had to be one happy camper to see the same old "same old" from PJ.  SAD!!

Fire Paul Johnson, his offense very predictable. No longer a mystery. His recruiting is terrible, his personality is even worst. Please restore Georgia Tech to respectability

Maybe CPJ can win 4 games this year. That will suit the Tech faithful.

@tomkat1111 That won't make UGA any more relevant. But heck you guys have to hang your hat on something.........maybe a second place finish in the EAST this year will suit the dawg faithful?....LOL

@TOJacket Once again, UGA fans do not brag about beating Tech.  You dorks really are not that smart.  We just fired a coach who was 13-2 against you so that should tell a reasonably intelligent person where beating Tech ranks in importance for UGA fans.  I swear Tech fans have to be some of the dumbest human beings on the face of the Earth.  Just flat out stupid.  You walk right in to this stuff.  You're either dumb or you enjoy being ridiculed and laughed at.  It's one of the two.

Answer this question: Why was Paul Johnson hired ? Was it because Chan Gailey couldn't beat UGA? Or because Johnson had the credentials to win at Tech? Tech is not UGA, Alabama, or Ohio State. It's a special place. It takes a special coach. Gailey may have done better at recruiting(thought not much) but Johnson has done better at winning. What matters most?

@bobbyross1990  This would be an idiotic post coming after any season but coming after a 3-9 season I'm really starting to believe your mother dropped you on your head at a young age.

@bobbyross1990 One?  Try two big guy.  Gailey never had any.  And Georgia Tech is no more of a "special place" than anywhere else.  It's a very good engineering school but that's about it.  Everything else about that place pretty much sucks.  Get over yourselves!!!  I have never seen a group of people with their heads so far up their own arses in all my life.

@bobbyross1990 Spot on Coach Ross!.......dawg fan will be bashing the program again in 2-3 years.....not much of a fan?

@TOJacket You do know that there are many successful people out there who are not engineers don't you?  I would recommend that you move out of your parents' basement and expand your worldview a little bit.  My God.

This type of rehash is so typical of the negativity that you spread.  Why not lay down the hatchet and write about something besides our coach?  I know it would be difficult to find something that you know about, but you should try it.

Even with poor recruiting Tech shouldn't go 3-9 in any season. Recruiting players that fit in a specialized offense(fumble & mistake prone offense) doesn't leave much for a new coach(should they ever hire a new coach) to work with. As a rule, Tech gets the 3&4 star athletes and occasionally a 5 star but these players are usually a cut above in intelligence. Why put them in a  brute force offense that is bucking heads with 4&5 star athletes at most positions? If you can't throw the ball downfield an 8 man defensive front can stop anybody's running game.

@TideDawg How many 4 stars do we have on our team Professor?.......do you know?

TideDawg

@TOJacket @TideDawg No! And I really don't care as long as PJ is their coach. If beating The Dawgs is what you live for.....so be it!

@TideDawg @TOJacket I wouldn't live very long if that were the case......I just enjoy watching you guys face plant every year!....shoot for the stars and come in 2nd in the East this year.

@TideDawg @TOJacket I hope for a good competitive game every year against the dawgs....we have pretty much accomplished that since CPJ arrived.....can't expect to beat a team with bigger, stronger, faster players?.......simple as that.

Who can forget Paula motioning to the player who recovered the blocked fg attempt to fall to the ground. 3-9. Good coach my arse. Good coaches don't to 1-7 in the acc.

The Crossroads leads to the AD Complex at GT. Paul is what he is at this point. Some good and some bad. He will never be able to recruit great players (many) but can he recruit enough solid players to win at least 7? We'll see.

GTBobby...do you want Mike Leach's cell number?

CPJ will be fine at GT. We don't have the local fan base therefore we don't get the exposure of other schools. CPJ has groomed several players to go to the NFL but more important he has groomed many to go on in life. CPJ does not sit around and worry about his job security. Go Jackets!

GT and Paul Johnson will probably play for the ACC championship

again this year Bradley, sorry to disappoint you. You had better concern yourself with the rookie head coach of your Athens squad!

Going from 11-3 to 3-9 would get most fired. He certainly will be fired sooner than later. If he wins 7 or less, he will be.

i think the most important part of cpjs job security is the 5 years left on his deal at around 2.4 mill per. thats pretty good job security if youre at tech.  he has at least 2 more years maybe 3 with that deal. so i would say that puts him in the middle of the pack at the least. espn insider my butt.  how about at least taking into account the obvious

I figure 8-4 or 7-5 coming up.

Mark: Are you using the word "pitiful" under the caption on the headline page for a particular reason? Also, is there a connection

in the points you made in this blog with your opinion on CPJ`s status at GT? Is this a lead off story (with more to come) as to whether you want him be fired?

LOGS1973

@TOJacket @Stinger2 Bradley should have been fired years ago! No problem , he has an office

in Athens on the UGA beat.. What a joke Bark

Madley has become. Schultz should have fired him years ago..
