10 not-so-fun facts about the not-so-hot Atlanta Braves

It’s bad. This we know. But, to borrow from Johnny Carson, how … bad … is … it? This bad.

1. If you threw out the season-opening nine-game losing streak, the Atlanta Braves would still be under .500.

2. The Braves are 4-14. That’s a winning percentage of .222. They’re on pace to finish 36-126. The modern record for losses in a season is 120 by the 1962 Mets, who were an expansion team. If you count their 6-20-6 Grapefruit League record, the 2016 Braves have won 10 of 50 games.

3. The Braves have hit three home runs as a team. They’re on pace to hit 27. The former Brave Evan Gattis hit 27 homers last season. That enabled him to finish in a six-way tie for 25th-best among MLB players.

4. The Braves’ best hitter is — or used to be — Freddie Freeman. His OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) is .569, ranking him 175th among the 196 players with enough qualifying plate appearances. If we use FanGraphs’ wRC+ (weighted Runs Created plus), Freeman ranks 177th.

5. The hitter, so to speak, who ranks 196th in both OPS and wRC+ is Erick Aybar. He’s also a Brave.

6. The Braves have a team slugging percentage of .289. That’s the worst in baseball. If they had a slugging percentage of .321, they’d still be the worst.

7. The Braves have worked five quality starts. Only one team has worked fewer.

8. The Braves have blown five saves. No team has blown more.

9. Only two years ago, the Braves finished a 162-game season with 110 quality starts (most in the majors) and 13 blown saves (fourth-fewest).

10. With three weeks gone, the Braves are 10 games out of first place. No other team has dug itself a double-digit hole. According to FanGraphs, the Braves have a 0.0 percent chance of making the playoffs.

Oh, and a cheery one! Dansby Swanson is hitting .324 with an OPS of .900 for the Carolina Mudcats. He cannot get here too soon.

All the trades are for next year and beyond. We're the oldest team in baseball right now and we're gonna suck for the next couple of years...just the facts.

#9 - wasn't the architect of that team Frank Wren? Wasn't that one of the YOUNGEST starting lineups in MLB?

Just how much vision and baseball knowledge does it take to architect an epic failure on a scale with the 1962 Mets? A: None, any of us COULD have done this, most of us would have been smart enough not to try.

I expected this team to be bad. I do believe they'll get better as the season goes on. I'll continue to support the team. However, one big concern for me is Freeman. He's struggling bad.

Everyone who keeps saying "give this a chance" is not recognizing how abysmally bad this team is.  Did you read the stats above?   They are on pace for 27 home runs AS A TEAM and a 36-126 record.   This isn't just bad....this is 1962 expansion NY Mets bad.

Freddie Freeman - the new BJ Upton. Big salary, long term contract, no production

@gumby61184 it's bad and it's all supposed to turn around in one year do they really expect us to believe that

@gumby61184 it won't turn around until we get an owner that will put money into the team and actually cares if the team succeeds

C'mon the Braves have played a majority of their games against two of the best ball clubs in he majors, the current NL Champ Mets, and the 14-4 Nationals.  Give it a break Mark.

When do they play the Marlins again?

My two year old twins do not appreciate the rarity of the Stubb's homerun that they witnessed live.  May be the last one for the Braves before they turn 3, in June.

A good pitcher will get that first pitch over the plate Freeman always get a hit with first pitch if u have two strikes on u the next ball if close swing because u are not the empire

@MarkBradleyAJC If your this bad just call up Swanson, and rest of kids and run with it. Royals did look where they are at now.

Even if they finish 36-126, the FO will still try to say this team was better than last year's

If you were expecting anything different this season, you should probably not be writing about baseball.  This team is going to lose a lot of games this year.  However, this team will get better as the season goes on.  But there is still much to enjoy about watching this team.  We have seen some nice pitching performances from these young arms.  We have lost a lot of the games by 1 or 2 runs so most of the games we have a chance.  Support this team.  I am very confident that this team is on the right track.  My only concern is Freddie Freeman.  When he first came up, he was more of a gap to gap hitter.  Now he is trying to pull everything.

@GametimeAtlanta they planned for this! They got 3 years too fix it! this year and fist two in new stadium. I don't see it happening

Planning on taking that Billion $$$' s in equity growth while dictate to front office into living within "revenue stream" soon Liberty?  Can't happen fast enough, you have stripped the assets.  Prime time to sell, oh new stadium, squeeze the goose a little more.

Lets not kid ourselves.  This is not a "rebuilding".  This is the new norm under the current Ownership/Leadership.

Freedie Freeman looks miserable.  I feel for him.  He knows.

Rebuilds are painful. And it will take much longer than management says. Unless they spend wisely for free agents, this team will not be competitive until 2019. And we have to remember, other teams will get better, too. And they will do so without having to stink first.

GaLatino

@Crapwheelie Agreed. I've been saying 2019 since last year... IF the moves so far pan out. Big if. As far as other teams, they don't have to worry about "owners" that care more about the stock price and stadium than they do about a little thing like the product on the field.
