So the Hawks’ deadline haul is … Kirk Hinrich?

Goggles up! (Curtis Compton/AJC photo)

The belief here was that the Atlanta Hawks would do nothing of consequence at the trade deadline. They did even less. They traded Shelvin Mack and Justin Holiday — two guards who didn’t play much — plus a second-round pick for a 35-year-old guard who was past his prime when he played here four years ago. If you’re thinking, “Gee, that seems like a lot to give up for a guy who has little left” … well, you’re not alone.

The more I see of the post-Ferry Hawks’ moves, the more I miss Danny Ferry. Since Mike Budenholzer and Wes Wilcox took charge of personnel, the Hawks have: Traded Adreian Payne, the 15th player taken in the 2014 NBA draft, to Minnesota for a lottery-protected first-round pick; parlayed the 15th pick in the 2015 draft into Tim Hardaway Jr., who was the 24th pick in the 2013 draft and who has become the Hawks’ 10th man; traded for Tiago Splitter, whom the Spurs were desperate to unload to clear cap space for LaMarcus Aldridge and who has done little here before getting hurt. Now this.

(OK, they also re-upped Paul Millsap, who remains the Hawks’ best player. But that didn’t leave enough money to keep DeMarre Carroll, which I understood. Toronto overpaid for him. Still, Carroll is much missed.)

Understand: I’m not upset the Hawks didn’t trade Al Horford for Dwight Howard. (I’d have been upset had they traded Al Horford for Dwight Howard.) I agree with the decision to keep Jeff Teague, at least until the summer. I didn’t believe this core needed to be dismantled, at least not yet. But this is a team that will need to get younger very soon, and their deadline haul was … Kirk Hinrich?

I know, I know. He won’t be here long. (He has an expiring contract, thank goodness.) He might be able to guard somebody late in a game come April/May. But here’s a team that could have used almost any big young body — the Hawks are terrible at rebounding, and Splitter has been lost to hip surgery — and they got … Kirk Hinrich? Another perimeter guy?

Maybe I’m making too much of this. Sometimes a team makes a trade just to make a trade. But I can’t help thinking the better course would have been to do nothing. Two guards and a Round 2 pick for … Kirk Hinrich? Really?

Dwight Howard to the Hawks? Wouldn’t be prudent.

The Hawks have gone from soaring to slogging.

The Hawks shouldn’t trade Horford — or Teague.

A year later, the Hawks are only pretty good.

This article is 4 days old...............has MB been threatened?

Ok, MB. We knew three things this past offseason:

-Ferry had no racist bones in him, confirmed by one of the former ownership group

-You and Schultz were among the first to jump on the "Fire Ferry" train, before the facts were disclosed

-he'd be sorely missed and you'd write an article about how much he was missed

You should run for President, your ability to work both sides of the fence would fit right in.

They really didn't give up a 2nd round pick. They got an extra 2nd round pick and then gave it away. So they really gave up 2 guards that never played anyways for a decent role player.

I moved to tn but have been a loyal hawks fan for twenty plus years.half of the hawks plan is ownership the other half is fan base.Atlanta has the WORST fans in the nba. After moving and seeing how they love the griz here...atlanta does not have a sixth man.bye far the most quite fans in nba...and a bunch of band wagon jumpers.

Bud must see something that we don't. Also, I believe the Hawks need a full time GM. Bud cannot concentrate on coaching this team while at the same time scouting AND obtaining quality players. He need to relinquish his GM duties and the Hawks need to get a legitimate GM.

As much as I respect what Danny Ferry did in his short time, and as bitter as I am about seeing him run out of town for no reason, I still agree with the poster below who pointed out that Ferry wouldn't have done anything different with this trade deadline. There was nothing to be done. The Hawks will have to make some big moves in the offseason, and if they can't keep Horford and/or Teague, then I'd like to see them acquire some high draft picks in a sign-and-trade. The free-agent market is a loser's game right now, and I don't see them getting anything worthwhile in return for Horford and/or Teague except a high draft pick or two.

Defense, 40% 3pt shooting, and solid game management skills. I'd say he would fit right in but coach bud does usually buy drive and dishers.

Mark we are so lucky to have you to tell us what all our programs should do.with your résumé why aren't you a GM. All we need idiots like you to do is give us facts. We can decide what we think for ourselves. As I recall you were not beating the drum for Ferry to stay - gutless- but now you miss him. Please go away.

"enough of this Danny Ferry Mularkey"

yea, let's just keep making the moves for cripples like Splitter, no defense Hardaways, and ready for the retirement home Hinrich's.

NBA Championship here we come!  Go ahead and start planning the parade route.

Aside from trading Joe Johnson and Hiring Coach Bud.  What has Danny Ferry really done?  His job was about mediocre as Coach Bud's current doing.  I know trading Joe Johnson has become his claim to fame.  But he never replaced what he and Zaza gave on the floor.  Joe for what it was worth was clutch.  He was one of the highest scoring 4th players when ATL had him.  Zaza was a serviceable "Rebounding Big MAN"

These 2 Things "rebounding and clutch scoring" Atlanta has struggled with since their departures.

Ferry never drafted a starter just a bunch of bench players who are marginal

His best picks Schroder and Muscala (this is a stretch) but the rest meh.

Schroder is not a starter yet.

Drafted John Jenkins who can't get on the floor in Dallas

Drafted Lamar Patterson (dime a dozen)

Drafted Mike Scott tweener who can't play defense

Drafted Tavares long long shot

Drafted Bebe then traded Bebe for nothing (In the Raptors rotation_

Signed Lou Williams (who was clutch) and traded him for nothing

Ferry is also the reason the Hawks lost Carroll.  He should have known the CBA rules when he signed him to a 2 year deal.  The same 2 year deal he signed Bazemore to as well.

They way this roster is struggling to get better is a direct result of Danny Ferry and the Hawks not totally paying attention to the rules of Early Bird Free Agency.

They didn't think Carroll, Millsap or Bazemore were part of their future so they wrote bargain deals

As for Teague vs Schroder,  Ferry and Bud never gave the kid the vote of confidence.

This Danny Ferry Mularkey has to stop.

@DjYogi  MAN I AM SO GLAD YOU ARE THE VOICE OF REASON! Blog of the Atlanta Hawks YEAR!

@DjYogi So Hawks management is planting subliminal anti Ferry messages again. Have you checked our record. What did we get in the trade for Hardaway and yea we made a great signing 8mil for Tiaggo. How's that working out. You are on a fools mission. Someone once said you are what your record is and PS try spending  a little bit of your money or you will never compete with Cleveland.  By the way did you really say aside from coach B !

AnsweredTHIS

@Dis custed @DjYogi  Not about planting messages, what DjYogi did was lay out some facts about what Ferry did or did not do.  Hey Ferry did some good stuff while he was here but if you read my post below even DF would not have made trades at the deadline.  Let this stuff go about Ferry was the savior of this franchise because he was not! He did not play one game, did not coach one game, or did  not make one three point shot.  What he did do was get rid of Joe Johnsons contract ( which in itself won him GM of the year) but all of the other things that Yogi outlined is spot on man! How about give the Hawks some time to spend money  ( like this off season) and then make some judgments.  Again, if you traded away key pieces do you really think you could have competed with GS or SA...wait I digress again, I forgot that first you got to get out the East!

@AnsweredTHIS @Dis custed @DjYogi            Extraordinary  ownership hires exceptional management whom lays out a program to develop and flourish. See spurs ,GS, and Heat (just previous) Common theme is exceptional program builders of which the Hawks no longer poses. Does anyone think Wilcox can compete on those levels ? Its not necessarily  a single superstar -that however wouldn't hurt. I'm personally happy that we didn't get fleeced at the trading deadline.

khd713

@DjYogi What has Ferry done? Well let's see. He put together a team that went to the Eastern Conference Finals, something the Hawks had never done before. That's the first thing that comes to mind. Other than that minor point, I guess you are right.

Did the Hawks get Thomas Dimitroff as Ferry's replacement as GM?

whoknowsanything

The Hawks traded 2 guys who don't play...they weren't going to get a lot for that.

But even at age 35, Kirk Hinrich is a better player than Mack or Holiday. He is shooting 41 percent from three-point range this season. Mack is shooting 15%.That's a big difference. He remains a very solid defender who can guard either backcourt spot, along with the SF position on occasion. He is a veteran leader who has started 665 games in his career. He is a good locker room guy.

Is he going to make a significant difference? No. But again, what do you want when all the team does is trade 2 guys who barely played?

And look around the NBA. Nobody made a big trade. Howard is still in Houston. Gasol is still in Chicago. Griffin is still in L.A. The biggest trade was the Pistons getting Tobias Harris. Harris is a good player, but is that move going to make the Pistons a title contender? Doubt it.

The FO needs to figure out what to do about Teague/Schroeder. Hopefully they re-sign Horford. But they are still in better shape than most teams in the league in terms of the roster.

Dear Tony Ressler:

Buy out and Give Gearons 1%  to Danny Ferry with promises of more when we actually win something.  We had something beautiful and your predecessors ( the worst owners in sports history ) snatched it away from us. See the history of how Don Shula arrived in Miami to make your franchise grow and prosper.

Didn't they also get a 2nd round pick from Utah?  So they didn't really lose any picks.  Instead, they got rid of 2 players who don't play much for 1 player who might play a little in specialized situations and be effective b/c he's a veteran.  Coach Bud also mentioned having a roster space open, which indicates to me that they'll probably try to sign one of those big guys that is going to be waived after being traded (Joel Anthony? Anderson Varejao?) and wanted to try to at least get something for one of the two guys most likely to be waived from the roster to open up a spot.  So, not an especially sexy move here but relatively savvy.

What would you have had them do Bradley?  What move could they have made without giving up Jeff or Al or Paul?  And to get what in return?  Howard, when they going to get him in the off-season.  Sometimes the best moves are those that are not made.  They can resign Al in the off season and still sign Howard with a little creativity.  To trade Jeff ( turn the keys over to "Dennis AKA I am not ready") would have been tragic! I think a poster has already said it at the bottom.  Make trades for what?  To see if you could beat Cleveland and then what?  Run into Golden State or San Antonio?  You would need a remake of the MJ Bulls to beat either of these teams...and the Haws don't have that.  Might as well see how far they can go and live with it.  Don't trade just for trades sake.  BTW, for all of you crying about Danny Ferry, not much he would have done either.  He did not fall off the turnip truck yesterday! He knows he would not have had the juice to beat either of those two West Coast teams and you still have to beat The King James! Relax, see what they do in the off season before you all go willy nilly on the Hawks.  Bud played the hand he was given and IMHO he did the right thing.  He has a sign and trade chip in Al if it boils down to that and also has a chip in Teauge to flip in the off season not to mention Paul.
