Muschamp to South Carolina is a win-win for UGA

Georgia is set to hire Kirby Smart as its coach. This falls under the heading of, “If you can’t beat ’em, hire ’em.” South Carolina is set to hire Will Muschamp as its coach. This falls under the heading of, “If you can beat ’em, hire ’em anyway.”

In four years of playing Muschamp’s Florida teams, the Gamecocks were 3-1. The last meeting saw the Gators blow a late lead and lose in overtime. The next day, Jeremy Foley fired Muschamp.

I do not understand South Carolina’s hire. I understand it less than any hire involving Lane Kiffin, lately the gold standard of tin-eared hires. If you can’t win at Florida, which is the best job in the SEC if not the nation, how can you hope to win at South Carolina, which is the fourth-best job in the SEC East?

Put it this way: Jim McElwain just took Muschamp’s leftovers and won 10 games and the SEC East. Muschamp never won the SEC East. And he’s going to do it at South Carolina, which has won the SEC East once ever?

At times like this, it’s fashionable to say, “Guy must have a good agent.” Muschamp has Jimmy Sexton, who is to college football as Scott Boras is to baseball. (Sexton also represents Kirby Smart. And Nick Saban. For brevity’s sake, it would be easier to name the coaches Sexton doesn’t represent.) But still: South Carolina had 54 days to search for a coach after Steve Spurrier up and quit, and the best it could do was a guy who’d been fired by Florida and who’d underperformed to the extent that he wouldn’t have been welcomed back as Auburn’s defensive coordinator?

South Carolina wanted Smart but was outmaneuvered by Georgia’s Greg McGarity. It wanted Tom Herman but managed only to get him a big fat raise at Houston. It was apparently turned down by Arizona’s Rich Rodriguez, whose tweeted demurral made the Gamecocks look even worse. Oh, and that Rich Rod stuff happened as Clemson was winning the ACC championship to move to 13-0. It hasn’t been a good 54 days in Chickentown. Even worse days figure to follow.

If you’re Georgia, you have to be ecstatic about South Carolina’s move. For one thing, you get to play against Muschamp every year, and Muschamp was the one Florida coach against whom Mark Richt had a winning record. (He was 0-1 against Spurrier, 1-2 against the Zooker, 1-5 against Urban Meyer and 0-1 against McElwain. He was 3-1 against Coach Boom.) This also means that Muschamp will not be joining the Bulldogs as defensive coordinator. I’d call that a win-win of the highest magnitude.

CMR will now face Clemson, Florida State, and Florida every year!

@HowdyJune , no, Clemson is in the Atlantic division and Miami is in the Coastal.  Miami's cross-division rival is FSU, so they will play every year.  But Miami will only play Clemson once every few years (if that), unless they meet in the ACCCG.

Boom might find it easier to meet expectations at the Chicken Coop.  He certainly knows the "best practices" for creating an SEC winner. Maybe he is the answer.

Florida is a good job, yes.  Best job, no way.  Bama is and always be the best job in the SEC. Tradition reigns!

The worst selection is a 55 year old Richt by far.  If you can't win in the SEC eastern division that for a brief time was weaker than the ACC coastal, at the same time, then and now is stronger than it was then, where at Georgia you had your choice of Georgia high school players who were recruited in some brass band announcement as the dream team, and now you are going to a stripped Miami teams that brings no fear in it's brand, and you don't have the press in your pocket, and Miami doesn't give a rip about you church affiliations pro or con, they pay good money, no discount for damaged goods, for one thing victories. Kind of the reason you got fired from Georgia, what was Miami thinking. Why do we always talk about Spurrier or Muschamp and leave Richt out there as a real find?  I think you will see either one of these coaches doing better than Richt and being paid less.

I thought Virginia would be a safer landing spot for Mark Richt, lower expectations.Eight wins a year would satisfy the alumni. I guess Richt believes all of the lofty news coverage he got at UGa ,off season NC's and so forth. In reality his UGa teams have be very ordinary since 2012. CMR could not even get his team to the top of a very ordinary SEC East .

The U is not the U it used to be ,so maybe CMR will not have NC pressure and can take his time building the U into a contender ,not for a NC but the ACC Coastal. A title the U has never won,a more realistic goal for a coach like CMR.

@Buschleaguer @Peachs Almost all Miami fans, alumni, players, and staff are ecstatic about the Richt hire.  They think he is a steal and a blessing that he was even available.

@Peachs , I think the Richt hire was as much about bringing some credibility and integrity back to the program as it was about wins.  Miami's reputation off the field has been questionable since the early 80's.  Hiring Richt immediately improves that.

This just in...Rich Rod turned down UGA,Bama,AU,USCe and Memphis in order to stick with that power house Arizona.

Hey Mark isn't it time for your first "Ga. will win it all next year" column?

Muschamp is a great hire for SC.

@farberboy

Yeah, If SC could not get the "great" RichRod to come coach the Gamecocks Boom is not a bad 2nd choice.

@Falcaints @farberboy

Love the semantics game you play,like most coaches RichRod can say HE was not offered the job,But I bet his Agent was contacted buy USCe. How about KSmart and Tom Herman I guess they were not Offered either, by

the Carolina administration.

But if it makes the Gamecock fans feel better that BOOM was their first and only coach OFFERED the job ,so be it.

Mark,

Come on Man!!!!Florida used their defense to win the East ,who do you think built that defense? Coach BOOM did. If the Gators did not have the PED QB playing the first third of the season the Gators would have finished 3rd or 4th in the East.

I am glad Coach Boom is not coming back to UGa ,mainly because that he would be gone as soon as he was offered a HC job. Plus he is a little too intense for the Grey Poupon set at Butts-Mehre.

Bucky ,

Go ask Urban about the Florida Job. Where did he win his first NC at .........Florida. Sorry Bucky ,it must sting to be #5 this year. Enjoy playing Stanford in the not so ROSIE Bowl this year. B1G will knuckle under and pick Buckeyes over Hawkeyes to go to Pasadena,now that is a Crock o Blank.

@OH:IO

Bucky

I guess you say Ohio State is the best job or Notre Dame , personally I would rather go to Stanford. Florida would not be my choice as #1 and neither would Ohio State.

As far as Dogs bowl game ,they are going to the one they deserve to be in ,Toilet or TurdLayer .It is where their play on the field put them.

@Buschleaguer

Sorry, not the "best" job.

Sting? No, that's for Tech

Rose Bowl? All I know it won't be a dog-like (toilet) Bowl.

The New Year's Six is all about ratings. Would the nation rather watch Iowa or Ohio State in the Rose?

Buschleaguer
Buschleaguer

@OH:IO

After watching that glorious display of offensive innovation in last nights B1G CG game .IT must really suck to know that Meyer and the MIghty Buckeyes lost at Home to a offensively impotent Sparty and their backup QB. As far as ratings go ,why not use that argument on the selection committee ,then Buckeyes and Notre Dame would be in the Playoffs and Clemson and Sparty would be in the potato chip bowl in Arizona. Iowa won their division and lost to Sparty at a Neutral site, but by all means Buckeyes earned the trip to Pasadana.

@Buschleaguer @OH:IO Busch.....I can't remember if your UGA or what, but there isn't an offense in the state of Ga. that can touch OSU.......or many others?
