Kirby Smart is UGA’s coach. Isn’t that what you wanted?

He’s outstanding in his field. (AP Photo/David Goldman)

Georgia has officially hired Kirby Smart. It’s a good move. It’s the best move Georgia could have made. (Taking it on faith that Nick Saban and Urban Meyer weren’t available.) Smart will do well.

The first sentence of athletic director Greg McGarity’s statement in Georgia’s official release: “It was critical to identify a person who would focus on a specific, defined process of developing championship football teams on and off the playing field.”

Jumps out at you, doesn’t it? “Championship.” That’s why McGarity made the difficult choice to fire Richt — because he no longer believed Richt could deliver a championship. That’s why Smart has been hired. Not just because he’s an alum — although that’s no small consideration — but because he has been the No. 1 assistant at the place that measures itself only by championships.

McGarity has caught grief untold over the past week, but today those demanding the AD be fired for firing Richt should take a glimpse of the bigger picture: McGarity has given Georgia fans what a lot of them — maybe most of them — had said they wanted (though not so loudly this past week): Richt out, Smart in.

The Richt-out backlash has made it seem that no right-thinking Georgia fan would ever have parted with their beloved coach, but that’s a distortion born of emotion. A lot of right-thinking Georgia fans had reached the same conclusion McGarity did. Difference was, McGarity had the power to make it happen. And he did.

Don't wake Bucky up. Those ZZZZZs are the best comments he has ever made.

On his way out the door Richt made a comment that "rings gather dust" and "relationships are what matter" and I thought to myself...Thank God hes gone because that is the type of thing LOSERS say. Yes, I said it.

@booyahbrave Richt made some comments at his introduction at Miami that I think may be taken the same way. If his players don't have "character" when they get to the University, they're not likely to leave with it. I learned how to do the right things from my parents. I learned how to play sports from coaches and how they taught didn't change my character.

No way Eason is coming to the Cesspool of the South now! Kirby is in way over his head. Get ready for a couple of rough years!

Little Bucky tooth; any word on Captain DUI QB's status for the 11am kickoff? Hangovers can be a b/tch to play through. Maybe you should start the other guy that tweets so well? Wonder if Urban will even show after admitting the team let him down when Iowa b/tch slapped you on their way to the rose?

Dont be sad Bucky. Your 2016 schedule is just as weak as 2015. After ND dismantles you at 11am you will be a media playoff pretender again until november.

There are only about 38k tech fans every saturday at the joke so i know why you are in the closet but they really need you to come out.

Savior big frauds schedule.

I support the hiring of KIRBY  and will remain as a loyal DAWG however it is hard for me to accept how Mark was treated and LIED to - we deserved better from our AD - he does not understand the GEORDIA WAY!!

@carolinadawgs The same AD you are bashing is honoring a contract that Richt never got around to signing.  I'd say that is the GEORGIA WAY!!!

TO Jacket keeps bringing up who was ranked where like pre-season ranking mean anything. He reminds me of a man with an ugly wife who keeps complaining about his neighbors ugly wife.

Speaking of ugly wives, see Muschamp's.

She's no Mrs. Kiffin.

@TideDawg Where have I said anything about pre-season rankings.....other than UGA being #9 and are presently not ranked....don't feel bad, we aren't ranked anymore either.

@OH:IO @TideDawg If Muschamp wants to make a change South Carolina is a good place to do it. S.C. is like Ga. lots of hotties.

kirby needs to ask nick for a couple of days off so he can fly to seattle and beg eason to come to UGA---eason will demand that kirby hire a pro style offensive coordinator and will want input on who he hires----if not, he will go to florida.

@39Concepts

Let Eason go to Florida, If Smart needs to beg an 18 year old high school player to attend UGa then the school hired the wrong man. And if he determines the type of offense he runs  and the offensive coordinator he hires by the demands of Eason ,well Smart should head back to Bama and stay on Saban's staff.

@39Concepts If Eason is a good as the hype he won't be anywhere very long. Alabama could use a quality QB recruit. There are many great High School players that never make it in college. A kid named Duda comes to mind. High School to college and college to the pros is no different. How many All America, and Heisman winners never made it in the pros. It would be a good idea to start concentrating on a different QB because I feel that Eason is going to flip flop.

@Buschleaguer @39Concepts I think Alabama has the same mindset of which you speak. If Smart yielded to a high school players demands he wouldn't have been at Alabama for 9 years....not under Saban. I'm not going to go so far as to say I like Kiffin but he has done a good job with Coker and last years QB.

@TOJacket @OH:IO @Buschleaguer  An old man mocking an 18 year old kid headed to the NFL eventually. Go take your nap Cary and quit obsessing over the team that runs this state and owns your arrsse! Little bucky tooth will still be here when you wake up. Good to finally have a friend again in little bucky isn't it Cary you b/tch!

Well,Well, Jeff Schultz finally said something that made sense in his article. He said the program under Mark Richt had stalled. He didn't say it had declined which is true but he was right on about being stalled. 9-10 wins got boring and being unable to beat the ranked teams was not acceptable. We may all look forward to 9-10 wins someday, but first you have to get bored with 6-7 wins and losing to the local insects. As many of you know wanting "Change" does not always work out, and that "change" has to be endured for 8 years with resulting consequences.

Can someone tell me what "we run this State" means?

Bucky ,

i know it is hard for you to understand the meaning of an in state rival at the OH:IO State, when Toledo , Miami of Ohio and Youngstown State are the only in state schools that the Buckeyes have ever played.

@OH:IO If it really meant anything you wouldn't be here.

Actually, we've played most of them, more than you mention - keeping the money in state.

That said, our rival is up North.

@OH:IO That is a tacky thing the leg-humpers started saying a few years ago because of there continued success at beating a team that is Academically superior but Athletically.........they love to say it, they whine like infants when they have to hear it.....I make sure they get there quota.
