Mark Richt at Miami: That’s a wonderful fit

Mark Richt will be working in a new conference. (Butch Dill/AP)

You might remember me saying I no longer believed Mark Richt could win a championship. I meant at Georgia. He might just have a chance at Miami.

If you’re a 55-year-old football coach who has just been fired, you couldn’t have found a sweeter landing spot. Miami is in the ACC, as opposed to the SEC, and plays in the Coastal Division, as opposed to the Atlantic, where Clemson and Florida State reside. Heck, Duke won the Coastal back in 2013, and North Carolina, which lost to wretched South Carolina, won it this year.

Oh, and there’s also this: Miami is Richt’s alma mater.

And this: Miami plays every other year at Georgia Tech. Richt has never lost a game at Bobby Dodd Stadium. He’ll be back — assuming the many reports of his taking the U job are true — again next season. Maybe Georgia fans will buy up half the tickets for that one, too.

If ever Richt considered retiring, that notion surely took a hike when he was deposed by Georgia. The famously placid exterior has always hidden a much more competitive nature than those on the outside get to see. He’s a proud man and a proven head coach. From Sunday morning on, he had to be thinking, “I’ll find me a job and win a bunch of games and show y’all what you’re missing.”

There was thought he might take a year off to contemplate the meaning of life, but he’s at the perfect age to start again. He could coach five, 10 more years and call it a career, and such are the resources in the bountiful state of Florida that he doesn’t have to roam far to recruit well. And he does, as we know, recruit well. And he has, as we know, built up a ton of political capital in that state to Florida’s north.

Just because I thought Richt and Georgia needed to part never meant I disliked the man himself. He’s impossible to dislike. He’s a good guy — stop me if you’ve heard that one before — and he has a terrific overall record as a coach. This new challenge could bring out the Richt we saw over his first seven years in Athens, and I’d love to see it.

I will say, though, that nobody in coaching should know better than Richt the value of the right assistants. Brian VanGorder was the right guy; Willie Martinez wasn’t. Mike Bobo was the right guy; Brian Schottenheimer wasn’t. But you’ve heard that before, too. For now, let’s just leave it at this:

Georgia is getting Kirby Smart. Richt is getting a new job at a place he’ll be viewed as a rock star. Four different coaches — Schnellenberger, Johnson, Erickson and Coker — have won national championships at Miami. It can be done there. It will be fascinating to watch the new man try.

(Oh, and not to say I’m smart or anything — we all know better — but I did actually broach this very topic not so long ago.)

Until the Dawgs can pry the hands of coach Dooley's fingerprints from the program they aren't going any where. The guy had a handful of good seasons and a won a championship 35 years ago but his influence is everywhere to this day. Step aside and let the program and coaches get out from his unduly influence and media suffocation.

Coach Nyquil should bring back the throat slash and 2 Live Crew to celebrate the U's proud traditions.

@The Dogfather If that happens then UGA fans are going to have to put up with 500 camera shots of CMR on the sidelines in Miami gear. Kind of awkward.

Good thing SEC has more of a bowl tie in with the B1G than the ACC. If CMR can get the Canes to any Bowl in 2016 ,he will deserve votes for coach of the year in the ACC.

@Big Wally I don't think he has live feeds of his Christmas parties.

at the least ol coach richt should put miami right back in the race for the fulmer cup.

he should have the canes running neck and neck for that title with the dwags. you cant take the thug out of athens.

their former coach golden tried to change that image and that is part of the reason why he is their former coach.

we all know from the successes coach richt had at gawga that he will have miami competing for that coveted cup once again.

i imagine he is going to have to get use  to the crowds at miami. all 10 people.

toooo funny.  go dwags. lmao.

@charlestonian77

I actually think the U is trying to change their image , they actually will dispense with the U tag and be more in line with Miami of Florida Handle ,kind of like Miami of Ohio. More representative of the wine and croissant crowd in the UM administration. The crowd that was always embarrassed of the Canes ,even when they won NC's. Of course the fans of the U will not be happy.with the change. But if CMR can get to 8 wins a season he will keep the administration happy. They may even move into Marlins stadium , where 20,000 is considered a big crowd.

This is just a question because I am a Richt fan. But if the three recruits he has visited and had a meal with the past few weeks decided to go to Miami. What is your thought?

@SomewherenSGa  My thought is that I hope they don't get hurt in the Belk Bowl before the NFL draft.

@TOJacket @SomewherenSGa yea you right it will be Black and Red. they have the #1 QB coming in in 2017, and already have a good QB. Cleveland has already said he was sticking with Ga.

Richt will be in a better place. I just hope Kirby will also and I hope he brings Muschamp with him. We need all the experience we can get. I didn't say I like Muschamp but he can motivate players.

The word is that coach Pruitt is up to be the next coordinator to be moved into a hc position. Since Richt was judged by the big three games that we lost I think someone should point out that Pruitt's defense gave up 103 points total in these three games.

@GTBob "He is a modern day Lane Kiffin" without the hot wife.

@HootyGoot Pruitt must be great in interviews. The guy has done hardly anything in career and seems to move up every year. He will probably be an NFL head coach in 2 years. He is a modern day Lane Kiffin.

After listening to UGA fans talk about how Richt is going to revitalize Miami and put them back on the map and have them back in the National picture, it really makes you wonder why they wanted him fired.

@GTBob I was surprised to see that more voted for CMR on the poll than CKS..........he has a lot of stuff to get 'right" down there.

Will Richt's domination of Paul Johnson continue at the U?....Most likely!

GTBob

@TideDawg Im sure all of the UGA fans will point to Richt's incredible coaching ability when it happens, completely ignoring the fact that we lost 6 of 7 games to Miami before Richt got there.

@TideDawg If he still gets all those top Ga. recruits........good grief!...you didn't think it was his Coaching skills did you?....lol........he has lots of lost souls to council in S.Florida?

@GTBob No, not all of us.  Just the Fan Club.  I personally think Richt will find things a little more difficult without all the 4 and 5 star recruits around to make him look good like he had here.  Do you have any idea how dreadfully average Georgia would have been without guys like Chubb or Gurley toting the rock or Murray or Stafford throwing passes?  What about AJ Green making freakish catches or a Jordan Jenkins or a Jarvis Jones rushing the passer?  He won't have guys like that at Miami.  Not as many of them at least.  He's going to have to actually do some coaching.  Good luck to the U with that.

@TideDawg will the tide continue to cheat and lie?

That was a quick decision by Richt to take the U job. Could it be that he had enough of Georgia and was ready to go? Some happy...some sad...it doesn't matter now. I wish they had replaced him with Dan Mullen. He is a terrific personality and has done wonders at MSU competing with Alabama and Ole Miss for talent. If Kirby smart can't win with the talent already on hand at Ga. then don't expect anything better in 2-3 years. We'll see!!

@TideDawg  Terrific personality?  Is this college football or the Today Show?  I'm sure Kirby is a fun guy to sit by the fireplace and sip hot cocoa with too but I'm not all that concerned with that.  Mullen is a fine coach but this crap about personality and being a sweet guy baffles me with you people.

TideDawg
TideDawg

@dawg fan @TideDawg I'm not sure you know the difference. Bloggers should keep in mind that you used the term "sweet guy"....makes you wonder!

dawg fan

@TideDawg I have no idea what the hell that means.  On another note, your hypocrisy baffles me.  Weren't you on here crying a river because we fired Richt?  Now you're saying Kirby should be able to win with the "talent already on hand."  That seems like a double standard to me.  So why do you give your hero Richt a free pass and not Kirby?  I'm not expressing any opinion on what Kirby will or should do I'm just questioning you on your BS double standard.  Please explain.

@dawg fan @TideDawg He can't even figure out what team he likes.....He has Tide in his name because being a Richt fan doesn't come with much bragging rights except Recruiting day!

TideDawg

@dawg fan @TideDawg That doesn't surprise me. I like Kirby...as a DC. I have no idea what kind of HC he will be. Look in your crystal ball and tell me. I want Ga. to be a winner. I want them to be in a class with the West Division teams. If Kirby can deliver that ...great, I hope so. But he is still unproven as a HC. He has been mentored by the best and maybe that's all he needs. It seems to me that Dawg fans were saying that Georgia's talent was equal to anybody's and Richt couldn't win with that talent.....who has the double standard? So Smart is inheriting great talent.

@TOJacket @dawg fan @TideDawg My! My! Is this a Jacket joining forces with Dawg Fan? TOjacket, you're only here because there's nothing to write about on the GT blog.

@TideDawg Who is making any guarantees about what Kirby will do?  Of course he's unproven.  Duh Captain Obvious.  We're just giving him a chance.  We gave Richt about 15 chances so I see no harm in giving Kirby a chance.
