Tech finishes 3-9. Paul Johnson is not pleased

These short takes are offered as an adjunct to the Georgia-Georgia Tech game column, which can be found here. Georgia won 13-7. Georgia Tech finished 3-9.

1. If I’m Ted Roof – or Mike Sewak – I’m not sleeping too soundly. Roof is Tech’s defensive coordinator. Technically speaking, his defense ticked upward from last season. The Yellow Jackets ranked 43rd in yards against and 52nd in third-down percentage defense entering Saturday’s game. They were 79th and 114th last season. Still, Paul Johnson is tough on defensive coordinators – he has had three in eight Tech seasons – and he went out of his way to disparage a reporter’s assertion that the Jackets had done OK against Georgia rushing attack except for a few long bursts. “Those count, too,” he said. He also said reporters need to have higher expectations. He also made it a point to rip his offensive line – Mike Sewak is the O-line coach – yet again, saying, “Pass protection was bad like it has been all year.” Looking ahead to the offseason, Johnson said: “I have some ideas what I want to do.” That didn’t sound like a vote of confidence for anyone.

2. For all Johnson’s fussing, the person he should be fussing at the most is … Paul Johnson. In beating Georgia in Athens last season, Tech rushed for 399 yards. On Saturday, it rushed for less than half that – 184 yards. This is Johnson’s offense. He designed it. He calls the plays. He recruits to its intricacies. He had, in Justin Thomas, a quarterback regarded as the best offensive administrator Johnson has had at Tech. But the Jackets could rush for only 216 yards against Notre Dame and 71 against Clemson, two opponents that – like Georgia – had both the manpower and the coaching to limit this offense. If not for a dubious unsportsmanlike conduct flag against the Bulldogs’ Jake Ganus, the Jackets might well have been shut out for the first time since Oct. 18, 1997 – 236 games ago.

3. Speaking of Thomas: What happened? He was regarded as a Heisman candidate in preseason, but he was nothing special once the playing began. Last season he mustered 1,719 yards passing and 1,086 rushing. This year, he passed for 1,345 yards and rushed for 488. Thomas wasn’t made available to the media after the game, but Johnson had this to say: “He’s a really tough kid. I don’t think he played as well as he did a year ago, but I’m not sure that was all his fault … We had a lot of freshmen out there. He hasn’t been getting the support he did.”

The team looks physically weak against opponents. if you like to arm tackle at least be strong enough to complete the tackle. The OL does not move anyone consistently. No pass rush with Gostis gone and no one in sight to replace him.  Not enough speed at  "A" back.  Butker needs to calibrate his pointing arm to line up with his leg.

The triple option is analogous to a $25.00 street walker, the only prospects interested are the dregs who can't go anywhere else.

Why would any prep player with aspirations of playing in the NFL (i.e. top recruits) want to play for GT/Paul Johnson??

Give it another 5 years and either KSU or Georgia State becomes the #3 NCAA football program in the state of Georgia, behind UGA and Ga. Southern.

GT and Paul Johnson - a match made in Heaven.

paul needs to junk that wishbone and get a real offense that top players want to play in---i'm tired of all these losses!

Georgia Southern made Georgia Tech look like an inept high school team when playing Georgia. Johnson has to go- worst season yet and not one win against Georgia at home.

Rich Tech alumni should cough up the money to buy out his contract. BTW what schools were standing in line to poach him last year? The AD has to go too.

I'm not even particularly a GT fan, and Johnson may get the ax--but GT isn't the plum gig UGA is. UGA will get someone of high profile. Not necessarrily the case at GT. So be careful what you wish for, Tech fans--you might just get it. But yeah--Johnson's a boorish egomaniac--no doubt there. I wouldn't want to be one of his assistants, that's for sure.

GT basketball, after only 6 games, in next to last place, just like they finished last year.

Paul Johnson threw his assistants under the bus again, but he remained great......in his own mind.

UGA fires Richt and GT sticks with Johnson. Further proof we will never be an elite program. No balls and an idiot AD that keeps giving contract extensions foe mediocrity!

@GTBee Ditto! Bobble-head-inski is a basketball oriented AD.

He is not pleased? Oh, well. That makes his abject failure OK. Let's give him a couple more million and watch the same BS again next season.

I'm with ya. We have fools as AD's.

@ronaldtallon I've never liked a man that bragged about what he was going to do....I prefer the man that does it first. Yeah! You're right, I'm not a Tech fan but I still want them to do well. They can sure spoil a Thursday night of football.

That was the most inept Tech I've seen in years. How does an Orange Bowl winner the previous year go to a disaster of a team.

Without the help of a bogus call on Ganus in the 4th Q Tech doesn't score.

Take away the super lucky ending to FSU game and we would be 2-10 with our biggest win being against Tulane!

The bowl game for the most recent National Champion loser. Glad to see Fla and Tenn are back to their old ways of beating UGA every year. And only a matter of time b4 USC will again.

I think it is more basic that all that, people started taking Tech seriously after last year and started studying film. I have always said the AJC's low watt coverage of Tech had been a blessing, kept them off the radar, and has been a curse to Georgia kept them on the radar. Once people take you seriously you better be an Alabama not a pretender or they are going to pick you apart every week with the next week's coach seeing what worked with last week's coach and adding to it.  It happens in the pros and now it is happening in college football. Once Vick was figured out by Carolina putting Davis on him as a spy it was time to find a new quarterback for the Falcons.

Ok but that still doesn't give me any faith. So next year, all of a sudden, we'll win? Doubtful. Johnson is averaging 7 wins over the last 6 yrs. That good enough for you. After Next yr, That Average Will Be Even lower. Going in the wrong direction with him. He should do the admirable thing and retire.

GTBee
GTBee

Sadly, next year will be more of the same. We need to recruit a QB that can actually pass the ball! 6 for 18 with 2 interceptions. Really!? Next year losses; clemson, unc, vt, uva, duke, miami, uga. Do we play at fsu? If so, add that one. The best we do is 6-6 but I propose 4-8 and maybe 5-7. If that's good enough for you, keep supporting Johnson. And his style of play.

@GTBee I think we need an offense line that can hold the linebackers and defensive ends, off Thomas more. That is where the blown assignments are adding up.  And I question the chomp blocking, you either make the block or you leave your quarterback defenseless.

Get rid of Johnson and hire Les Miles!!!

GT has to find a way to get better at passing the football. The wishbone is a great offense for throwing as well as the run. Coach Bryant didn't have a Joe Willie running the bone but Bama passed it when they needed as well as when they wanted to pass. The passing down can't be just a wasted down as it is today with GT.

I will hangup and listen.

Peachs

@KeepOnSmilingWetWillie I think they need to figure out how to sneak the B back out more or actually find a tight end formation, to make the linebackers have a distraction.  You have nine in the box, coming at Thomas.

Halfback

Stan Awtry quotes Richt as saying that UGA should not have planted their flag into the GT, and he would have prevented it if he had not already left the field.  Stan, you might want to revise your last paragraph.  Richt was definitely on the field during the whole episode.

Peachs

@Halfback Tech was so bad, it would be like the US defeating the Bahamas and bragging about it. Maybe the flag wakes Tech up, but I am not sure Tech can put together a team, starting to worry about Georgia.

Good for them for doing it. When we win in Athens we rip their hedges out so this is their payback. Seems fair. They should have heaved it it the air at you know who!

MB how dare you speak bad about Thomas!? These GT fans will be on you all day about how it is not his fault ( like CPJ is doing now) and how it is everyone else's fault! CPJ will take no blame for not teaching this kid any kind of proper mechanics ( because he cant) and not teaching this kid that the 9 route is not the only route in football. Especially if he can't throw the route!

The nightmare season is finally over. Coach Johnson and his staff should take a salary reduction for that fiasco.

Who should be worried. The dawgs stacked with 8 star recruits.

What happened? Wher's the dog beef Bradley? Where do those

5, 6,7 stars players do in Clark County.
