Paul Johnson: ‘Never had a season like this one’

This was the only fumble the Jackets didn’t lose. (Curtis Compton/AJC sports)

These short takes are presented as an adjunct to the Georgia Tech-Virginia Tech game column, which can be found here. A team named Tech won 23-21, but it wasn’t Paul Johnson’s.

1. Paul Johnson, a coaching lifer, appeared shaken after this loss. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a season like this,” he said. His Yellow Jackets, who were ranked No. 14 in the land and favored at Notre Dame on Sept. 19, are 3-7 and cannot finish in anything better than a last-place tie in a division they were picked to win. Several of those losses have been of the excruciating variety, but this was the worst. Tech lost three second-half fumbles, dropped a third-down pass that would have garnered a first down and saw a potential winning drive aborted by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Johnson’s offense was limited to 258 yards and didn’t score a point after the first quarter. For the sixth time this season, the Jackets lost as a betting favorite. Good grief.

2. Jeremiah Attaochu, meet Errin Joe. The 2011 Tech-Tech game here turned on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Attaochu, who threw a punch at the Hokies’ Logan Thomas after the massive quarterback didn’t go down. (Might have been a late whistle.) The 2015 edition turned on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against guard Errin Joe, who was whistled for shoving a V-Tech player after quarterback Justin Thomas was stopped at the Hokies’ 39 with 57 seconds remaining. “The Attaochu one was probably a personal foul,” Johnson said. Of the Joe penalty, Johnson said: “They kept rocking our quarterback. I assumed it was going to be offsetting (penalties), but it wasn’t.” The penalty pushed the Jackets back across midfield. Thomas was sacked on third-and-20. His pass on fourth-and-27 was incomplete.

3. Johnson offered praise for his defense, which kept the game close despite the three turnovers; for his offense, he offered none. “We just stopped executing,” he said. “Right now, we’re not very good.” The Jackets gained 130 yards in the first quarter, after which they led 14-0. They gained 128 yards thereafter, and the only G-Tech touchdown came on Brant Mitchell’s interception return of a terribly thrown Michael Brewer pass. The Jackets were outgained by 146 yards over the final three quarters, and the Hokies aren’t renowned for their offense. This was a bad loss to a not-very-good opponent, the second in a row for G-Tech.

Game Summary Analysis...What is QB doing running 28 times?.....I do like the 4 out of 8 with 1 interception.....for 15 yards per completion and 7.5 yard per pass attempt. Tech has to change it's mindset.....To get 9 interceptions Tech would have to throw 72 passes and would get 565 yards passing, compared to 300 yards rushing. Yes the points would have been higher with the interceptions. The hope is as time goes on execution gets better. Time of possession and rushing yards were there but score wasn't . Team kept going but game was not close at the end. Going for 1 point two consective times sends wrong message to team the coaches are settling for a loss. It isn't over till it's over.  Defense has to get more sacks and pressure and more turnovers as well. . The ability and character are there what we need is skill and that means going over passing and catching with stop watch and not turning the ball over, until we get it  right.

Jim Donnan has broken down the specifics of the Richt- Eason breakfast! No grits?

Van Gorder showed coaches how to defend Johnson's offense.  Defenses are moving around a lot before the snap.  Tech OL is in complete disarray.

GTBob

@dawgcane02 Van Gorder didn't do anything that hasn't been tried before many times in the past. We just can't execute this year.

dawgcane02

@GTBob @dawgcane02

I dunno about that.  Same OL as last season minus 1 player.  Same QB.  You telling me there's a huge dropoff in the talent of your backs?

I think the cat is out of the bag.  GTs triple-O exposed by Van Gorder.

GTBob
GTBob

@dawgcane02 Its not the same OL as last year. Nor do we have the same B-Backs, A-Backs, or WR's as last year. Using the DL to create confusion only works if the OL doesn't know what they are doing. It has been tried in the past and failed.

Johnson says he never had a season like this.......hmmmmmm, it probably won't be the last one like this one. All the teams are getting better in the ACC....except GT. How do you game plan for GT? Just go back to last year and do what you did then.....and the year before, and the year before. GT runs the same tired, boring offense every year......dive left, dive right, option right and left......throw wobbly pass then punt. I'd like to see GT a consistent winner but it ain't gonna happen with PJ.

@TideDawg You're dumb enough to talk about CPJ when your Coach and  team  runs the same tired, boring, under-achieving offense year in and year out?........and please, we don't need your support sport. When is Richt coming back from his new episode of "Predators"out in Washington?.....lol

GTBob

@TideDawg So what happened between 2013 and 2014? Did every team we play decide to run a completely different defensive scheme than the one that worked a year before that?

@GTBob @TideDawg He's going to have to study on that a while Bob..........look at his name......TideDawg?

It's called luck.  That's right.  A blind squirrel will find a nut once in a while.  Just ask Mark Richt.

GTBob

@dawgcane02 So we just got lucky 11 times last year? That is just silly. Here is the reality that no one wants to accept. Our offense is just an offense. If it is executed well it is very hard to stop. If executed poorly then it looks terrible. Same with the pro style. Same with an air raid offense. Same with a shotgun spread offense. Its just offense. Its not a puzzle.

RedClayHound
RedClayHound

@GTBob @dawgcane02 That's right.  To put the blame on the style of offense is intellectually lazy.  This team is not executing ... the reasons could be many fold, but it's not because of the style of offense.  I'm a UGA guy and get frustrated when folks say the same about the pro-style we run.  These games come down to coaches creating an environment for guys to make plays and execution.  Plain and simple.  At the end of the day, nothing special about any teams offense ... just special players executing and making plays when the opportunity presents itself.  Go Dawgs!

CPJ is the greatest coach in college football today.

When he loses its because his players were too busy excelling in the classroom at the toughest institution of higher learning in the world than to properly prepare for the game.

Paul Johnson is one of the greatest coaches in the history of the school. His offense is mostly unstoppable. Most every year,no matter how teams prepare, or how many times they have played against the o , we still get our yards and score our points by the bunches. He is an offensive genius. The O is like a finely tuned auto that is missing. It needs a diaganostic checkup, to see what or where the problem is. CPJ is the master mechanic. It might take him a while , but he will figure things out. If the D can keep improving, watch out! The sooped up wreck is back! HANG IN THERE COACH

e Another exciting game but loss...Hate to admit but I went to game basically to see the Half time 1990 team in part. What Bobby Ross had to say was for all   coaches and players and fans...He built the 1990 team on 5 areas.....1. Ability.....2. Speed....3. Skill.....4. Toughness....5 Character.  ...This team has speed, ability and character but needs a little improvement in skill and toughness. Skill to me means yes one can play qb and Wr..etc...but can you thread the needle and execute. Toughness means pounding till the end, hanging in there. To me playing smart and with one's abilities helps with skill. The other thing that came out at me was Shawn Jones being quoted online as saying Winners find a way to win.,,.Something tells me this team in on the verge of starting to win either this week or next or next  year....

To "the" johnson -  your silly offense DOES NOT WORK in big boy football!!!!!

Thats why even YOU abandon it when we are losing and the clock is running out....even YOU have NO confidence in it....

I did see some great passes to the A's last night swinging out of the backfield, loved that, but that is NOT your offense unfortunately.

Yours is 3rd and 14...."lets run the dive...they wont expect that!"

Or better yet...its 3rd and 20 lets throw a bomb...watch the film you idiot...Justin does NOT have the blocking for an 8 second set up...they bring the house every time!!! Watch the film GD'it!

Screen pass, quick slant, shot gun, wild cat...anything to back the corners and safeties out of the box! This s**t aint that GD hard!

Hookedonshortpasses
Hookedonshortpasses

@GTBob    Coach bob, I did watch that 3rd and 20 again, the Tech guy tried to block the VT guy, but JT5 was sacked for about a six yard loss.  Was it poor skills/practice, lack of size/speed...I don't know.  Perhaps a quicker pass might have been successful...again, we do not know.

I'm beginning to wonder if johnson has so many plays that perhaps he cannot remember them in a timely manner (resulting in a term you used once ...."brain fart").

Is it time for johnson to use a "cheat sheet" to possibly help him recall some of his seldom used special plays?

As jim said, those few passes to the "A's" were a beautiful thing....

Another observation similar....Tech third drive, VT had nine guys withing seemingly three yards from the LOS.  Tech ran an A back sweep that resulted in a loss....would a coach not subject to brain farts have recognized that there was an open area and either called a short pass (or allow JT5 to audible)?

Whatyouthink, coach bob?

GTBob
GTBob

@GTBigJim Well, CPJ only has 30 years of coaching experience and multiple coach of the year awards. Im sure his expertise pails in comparison to a random AJC blogger.

We are close, 120 out of 128 teams in the NCAA division one, in a reverse position we are the eighth worse fumbling team in the country.  Army coached by a Johnson protege is number one or last with 128th.  Louisville (124) and Boston College (127) are actually both worse than Tech in the ACC.  Three ACC team in the top 8 fumbling teams in the country, no SEC team in the top 10.

Peachs

In the Coach Lewis era we got blown out, this debacle is a series of slow cuts, looking like we are going to win and we don't.  What is the record for fumbles in one season we have got to be challenging that, and since we don't pass much, we have more opportunity, in this case, to fumble, can't imagine any team in the country having more fumbles.

Well at least Tech will not have to play on that blue field again this tear. LMAO

It's been a bad season for all the local teams. At least the DAWGS will be in some 3rd division Bowl game, while the Humble Bumbles stay home for the holidays. Too bad, CPJ could sure use that extra couple of weeks of Bowl practice to try to improve his team.
