Clemson is No. 1, and I second that emotion

All hail King Dabo! (AP Photo/Rainier Ehrhardt)

Clemson? No. 1? Really?

Yes. Really. And — not that Bill Hancock or Dan Radakovich or Condoleezza Rice asked my opinion — I concur.

I’ve seen three of the top five teams, as rated by the College Football Playoff committee, in person. (And, counting Florida, four of the top 10.) Clemson was the most impressive — good offense, good defense, big-time quarterback. Put that team on a neutral field in January, and I believe it would beat Alabama or LSU or Michigan State or Baylor or TCU. (It has already beaten Notre Dame.) I’m not sure the Tigers would trump Ohio State, but there’s no question that they’ve been more impressive than the Buckeyes to date.

(Then again, you know where Ohio State was in the initial set of rankings last year? Sixteenth. Auburn, which would finish 8-5, was third.)

Random observations: The committee values strength of schedule over being undefeated; the presumption of SEC eminence still holds, what with No. 2 LSU and No. 4 Alabama, which has a home loss, in the first four; the Big 12’s odd scheduling — No. 6 Baylor, No. 8 TCU, No. 14 Oklahoma State and No. 15 Oklahoma have yet to play each other or anybody else of real consequence  — has hurt that curious conference; No. 5 Notre Dame is great shape, and No. 18 Ole Miss was penalized heavily for losing to No. 13 Memphis.

That latter bit could become a big deal if the Rebels don’t lose again. (They play Arkansas, LSU and Mississippi State, with the first two games in Oxford.) Could the winner of the rough-and-tough SEC West and the champion of the only conference that matters be omitted from the playoff field?

My glimpse of No. 1 Clemson.

My glimpse of No. 4 Alabama.

My glimpse of No. 5 Notre Dame.

My glimpse of No. 10 Florida. (Gator fans won’t like this.)

I don't know why so many fans are screaming about the top 4 teams. Right now it means nothing. They knew LSU and AL. would eliminate one or the other. IF LSU wins Sat. they get to skate into the SECCG. Alabama wins and they still have to beat 2 tough teams to get there. The only way Ole Miss can get to the SECCG is for Alabama to beat LSU. I'm not going to pull for somebody to lose so the Tide can get in. Play the games and whatever happens happens. The Tide could win out and still not get in the SECCG.

For all of the haters commenting, who are obviously scared of what Dabo is building in God's Country, remember this:  We thought NEXT YEAR was our year.  Get used to it.

To your last question:  one can only hope so!

Who has Clemson played?  Notre Dame is also overrated, as usual.

No matter, Clemson will choke as usual.

#3 SoS; 1-1 against CFP 25 with games against #2, #20, and #10 still to come as we sit right now.

@WhatExcuseNow @GTBob  Bama, you're dealing with a Ga. Tech. fan. They don't understand big boy football. They get their ratings beating Alcorn St., Tulane, and an ocassional upset. You won't see them scheduling games with SEC teams in the West Division.

Mark you just showed your college football IQ. You didn't score very well. Clemson is a scant few seconds away from letting Notre Dame jerk their hearts out and stomping on it in their own back yard. Despite the win, Note Dame was actually the better team that day and Notre Dame is not that great this season. Clemson has played a cup cake schedule and the rest of the season's schedule is sub par also. Clemson, if it makes it too the playoffs, will make a first round exit, just like the previous ACC champ.

@caneowar  Notre Dame was the better team that day?  Did you watch the game or just turn it on with five minutes left?  Clemson lead by as many as 18 and lead by 15 in the fourth.  Notre Dame made a nice comeback but Clemson was and is clearly the better team.

Looks like DRad made a good career move.

@jarvis1975 Considering that he was being nudged out the door at GT, yes, it was probably a good move.

Clemson just received the kiss of death.  Whatever Bradley thinks- you better run the other way.

Alabama should beat lsu by 6+, then steamroll florida in the sec title game. In the final 4, alabama will not stop ohio state, like last year.

@39Concepts  I don't think Ohio State will be in the top 4. However, they should be well rested for their last 2 games after not having to play for 10 weeks.

The only conference that matters?  The last two years would seem to invalidate that trite little thought.

The Clemrons play nobody, weak schedule, weak conference. They will have another WV moment in the playoffs.

Natrez Patrick and Chauncey Rivers should transfer to Colorado State where they can smoke one legally.

Im fine with Clemson at #1. They have been impressive this year. LSU or Ohio St would have been fine at #1 as well. Alabama at #4 is hilarious though.

GTBob

@FlatTire To an extent, I agree. I wouldn't have them quite that high. Their only loss was a 2 point loss to the #1 team though. Bama got blown off their home field by a team nowhere near the top 10. I would love to hear a logical argument from the committee for why Bama should even be ranked above Florida.

@GTBob Is Bama or Florida going to the Super Bowl ? Admit you are wrong when you are wrong.

@AlwaysReady How can I be wrong about my opinion that Bama probably doesn't deserve to be #4 right now?

@GTBob @AlwaysReady  Todd Gurley is already the best RB in the NFL and you predicted he would be a bust

Just own up to it

You were wrong

@DawginLex I never said a single word about how good he may or may not be in the NFL. If he is doing well then good for him.

Blown off Bryant-Denny Stadium's field???? Really??? Your definition and mine are definitely different about a blowout.  Lost by 6 points using 5 turnovers.  4 drives started inside Bama's 27.  Ole Miss needed a miracle throw up for grabs as the Qb was being leveled and a deflection into the receiver's arms along with a missed penalty for linemen down the field to Win it.  But hey, football plays happen.  But don't keep kidding yourself that this was a blowout, Bob.  #3 SoS and 1-1 against CFP 25 with #2,#20, and #10 still to play as we sit today.

the dogs are not worthy of being mentioned with Clemson.

Yet again, dog glory is all on the past. Most of all, the distance past.

What is odd:  #4 Alabama is expected to beat #2 LSU on Saturday. Shouldn't rankings be in order of who would expect to win those games?

@GTBob Todd Gurley as an Atlanta Falcon could have been reality, with Devonta Freeman a powerful 1-2 punch in the backfield.

With their easy schedule, clemson will make the final 4 but get a beatdown by ohio state. Urban wants ring #4.

@39Concepts

Easy schedule?  What are you talking about.  They steam-rolled a talented Georgia Tech team led by Paul Johnson's unstoppable offense.

@39Concepts Easy schedule?  Hey look, we have another person who has yet to realize Clemson's SOS is ranked higher than LSU's and OH State's (and TCU's, and Baylor's)...don't let the facts get in the way of opinion, though
