Therezie to Mettenberger: I’ll melt with you

NASHVILLE — These short takes are presented in conjunction with the Falcons-Titans game column. The Falcons won 10-7. This was not the greatest display of football in NFL annals.

1. Robenson Therezie, undrafted rookie free agent, played the game’s biggest snap like a 10-year pro. “I’ll go through the whole play for you,” said Therezie, who was playing on a bad defense at Auburn this time a year ago. As promised, off he went. He had what’s known as the “No. 2” receiver, which could have been a tight end or a back, neither came his way and he settled into zone coverage. But he didn’t actually settle. He “melted.” That’s what the Falcons teach their safeties to do — they “melt” toward the area in which they believe the quarterback will throw. Therezie, who didn’t start this week at free safety after being undressed by Saints tight end Benjamin Watson two Thursdays ago, was nonetheless in the absolute right spot to grab Zack Mettenberger’s final pass. “Under pressure, I knew he was going to throw the ball,” Therezie said, and he based his assumption on the knowledge that the Falcons’ were blitzing off the right side. The interception saved an exceedingly shaky day.

2. Therezie got so technical in his breakdown that a teammate said, “You’re giving away our whole defense.” Therezie shook his head in defiance. “We play the way we play,” he averred, and sometimes that way is a beautiful thing. There’s force and precision, and there’s not much left to chance but there’s room enough for instincts to be rewarded. It’s no wonder this stuff worked at the highest level in Seattle. It’s no wonder these Falcons love playing it now.

3. The offense, however, is another matter. The Falcons have scored six offensive touchdowns in their past three games, one of those being a fumble recovery in the end zone. They have managed one touchdown in the first half of those three games. They failed on third- and fourth-and-goal from the Titans’ 1 in the fourth quarter. Matt Bryant missed a 47-yard field goal try minutes later. Said Matt Ryan, who was intercepted on that fourth-and-goal and who had an even worse interception in the first half: “We’ve got to clean it up.” He included himself in that “we”, and he said of his first interception: “I made a poor play.”

Matt Ryan...garbage.

Therezie shouldn't get too big of a head, that's the first time he's been near the ball all season.  He's pathetic just like the rest of the secondary.

Now that the Texans need a running back with Foster out for the year, Falcons need to trade RB Coleman and Roddie White to Texans for JJ Watts. A secondary deal would be for Clowney as a second choice

This is not fantasy football! Texans are going no where! Come on man...stop it!

@loel Lol, the ONLY Falcon the Texans would even consider for Watt might be Matt Ryan and even then I doubt they'd do it...

@kevkat @EricEllis @loel I dunno, with the Texans current QB situation they might think about it.  But Its not a trade I would make from Atlanta's standpoint either.  A franchise QB is worth more wins than JJ Watt could ever hope to be and their respective records prove that...

@loel Add next year's first round pick to that offer and the Texan's probably still say no!

@Chopp.I like you, who ever you are.  Rise Up Falcons....A true Falcon fan win  (or lose).  Some of the others writing comments should be ban from writing them.  If you don't like the Falcons, move to the city that host your favorite team.....don't bash the local teams.

@Maggie5606 I was in Atlanta Stadium on 9/11/66 when the Falcons played and lost their first game to the LA Rams 19-14. I have celebrated and suffered with this team every day since then. (Mostly suffered) So when someone has the audacity to suggest that I find another team because I'm not happy with the way my team is performing, I get a little ticked. Families have fights. I actually think that the fickle fans are the ones that don't care. They yell support your team or leave even when the ownership is not trying to put a good product on the field as the Smith's did for years. They don't care that great players like Nobis, Humphery, and others waste their careers here and are cheated out of a ring because of non-caring owners. I'll cheer my team when they do well and scream when they don't perform just like I did my kids when they did great in school or slacked off. I do think Mr Blank wants to win. But he hasn't learned how yet. Still for what a ticket cost to see a game I think I have the right to complain when the product on the field doesn't live up to potential.

Beasley needs to step it up! He was man-handled by Tyler Lawan all game plus he got the penalty for not getting off the field fast enough, on the punt. The guy has a lot of potential but I'd like to see a bit more pressure on the QB from him ...

Therezie was a good player at Auburn but was lost in the crowd as the defense as a whole got torched late last year which probably cost him getting drafted. The Falcons got a steal picking him up. This win goes to the defense for only giving up 7 and coming up with big plays when needed.

Calvin Johnson has no QB, 32nd ranked head coach, no running game, cursed team and franchise, is double and triple teamed every game, has played a brutal NFL schedule against teams like Denver, Arizona, Minnesota, Seattle, San Diego, and he will STILL outperform Julio Jones and his weekly mega-targets and cupcake schedule before this year is over.

The more I see of "Matty Ice" the more I wonder who holds that thought the he is among the "elite" (whatever the Hell that really means) QB's? He was out-performed by a BACK UP QB yesterday. If not for a bad decision by Mettenberger the Falcons would have (and should have) lost to an lesser-talented team! For a veteran player Ryan often looks confused and frightened and his erratic play proves that he is! The one thing you can count on is Matt throwing interceptions!

Yes the Falcons have mortgaged the franchise for him (remember thet tried to make Michael Vick look like the greatest by paying him that unbelievable money) and obviously will hold on to him but IMHO the team is much better than Matt Ryan!

Chopp

@HelloMarty Are you nuts?! Stat line from yesterday:

Ryan:               22/38 for 251 Yds and 1 TD

Mettenberger: 22/35 for 187 Yds and 1 TD

Plus he WON in case you forgot.

@Chopp @HelloMarty Speaking of stats, let's also remember that had the JJ play in the end zone been correctly called MR would've finished with 2TD and 1 INT instead of the other way round.  You can also take that second INT off his stats sheet if Shanahan calls a common sense run to Freeman on 3rd down after the ball was placed at the 6 inch line.

RickinWarnerRobins

@Chopp @HelloMarty  "He" didn't win...the defense won the game because of a stupid error by the opposing QB.  If you're going to make up crap here, make up something believable.

The Falcons squeak by another horrible team WITHOUT a QB and they're ecstatic. When will they ever play a real NFL team.  Julio Jones hasn't seen a good defensive team and secondary all year.  He is very pedestrian with anything close to a good secondary.  As I've said numerous times, Falcons are frauds and Julio is good, but not great.  Again, the SCHEDULE will get the Falcons in the playoffs but a quick exit is the final result for this team.

Just talking about MR's QB rating on 92.9 the game, it stinks bad. Mettenburger( the guy who got beat out ) almost pulls the upset over MAtt Ryan. Let that sink in. Totally inept offense right now. If the Packers or the PAtriots were playing the TItans with Zach at QB, the game would have been over at the half.

Chopp

@monty1 You want us to let an "almost pulls the upset" SINK IN?! What fairy tale world am I living in?!

We WON the game. We are 6-1! This is the NFL in case you forgot! A win is a win and we are going to the playoffs.

I like Matt Ryan but there's something going on with him.  Yes the line (BOTH) still sucks (Remind me again why Dummytroff is the still the GM) but he seems to get the yipes when the game is on the line.  He reminds a lot like Tom Brady in playing style BUT he doesn't have Brady's focus and killer instinct.

Chopp

@AdmiralObvious53 Who cares bro? Matt Ryan is our QB and won us the game yesterday.  He also has FOUR 4th quarter comebacks already this year. Only you fantasy nerds care about stats. Like Herm Edwards said, "YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!"

@AdmiralObvious53 I think he is bothered by poor snaps. There were several yesterday. The first pick was yet another bone-headed play by Ryan, essentially a pick-6 as the Titans scored on the very next play. The one in the end zone was horrible play calling, why didn't he audible out to do a bootleg or hand it off??? He did not roll out as effectively as he has in previous games this year. Also keep in mind that Ryan played vs the #1 pass defense in the NFL and he still had a QBR of 92, not too shabby....

@WAITUNTILNEXTYEAR @SurfLand Surf and Chopp are obviously heavily medicated as they can't see, or aren't willing to admit, that the Falcons have issues on both sides of the ball. This team has been lucky to win most of the games...luck ran out during the Saints game and it surely will again soon...perhaps this weekend.  The way they're playing they won't hang with the Panthers.

The Falcons got by in the type of game that every team has during a season. Not every game plan or defensive scheme is perfect. Winning when you are not at your best is a good sign for the future. Do what you do best, and stop what your opponent does best. Sounds like a formula for winning. A 10 win season looks possible......but will it be enough to get into the playoffs?.......maybe, as long as they can at least split with Carolina. New Orleans is not out of this thing yet and the Falcons cannot afford to lose to them again. Talking about "must win" games is not good conversation but that is a must win for the Falcons as well as a split with Carolina. The Falcons still have to win 4 or 5 of their next 9 games. 5 more wins should be enough....4 may not be enough.

Chopp

@TideDawg We will win at least 7 more game, probably 8.

Just excited the Falcons won a close game.  NFL games are tough but you constantly hear media analysis talk about the Falcon's' easy schedule.  There are no easy games.  However, the offensive line, defensive line and QB play have to get better.  Not sure if it's Ryan or the OC calling passing plays when the run game is going well.  very Confusing but again, happy for the win.  Now let's beat the Bucs

Paradoxically, the emergence of Freeman has coincided with Ryan's slump. We've talked for years about how much more effective Ryan would be with a real running game, but now that he finally has one, he's playing some of the most erratic football we've ever seen from him.

You'd have to think this will change soon. Ryan is a proven commodity, and he'll make the adjustments he needs to make to get back on his game. Once that happens, look out, because it's becoming more apparent with each week that there's nothing fluky about what Freeman is doing. He's a legitimate star.

@We_Will_Get_Fooled_Again Tell 'em! People better watch out, we are winning games with poor play on all sides now.  Just wait until our penalties drop, our pass rush is at 100% and Matty is perfect.  We will be unstoppable, ESPECIALLY at home.

The Falcons play better in the 2nd half of a game. This will help in the "PLAYOFFS." Go Falcons!!!
