Book it, Danno: Your Falcons are going to the playoffs

With two losses and without Nick Chubb, Georgia won’t make the College Football Playoff. At the rate it’s going, Georgia Tech mightn’t make a bowl. But there’s one local team we can be all but assured of seeing play beyond the calendar year.

The Atlanta Falcons are 5-0. According to ESPN Stats & Information, 39 of the 43 teams that started 5-0 since the NFL playoffs expanded in 1990 have qualified for postseason. That’s 91 percent. And ESPN S&I notes this: “Our Football Power Index gave the Falcons and Packers each a 97 percent chance to make the playoffs last week” — meaning when the Falcons were only 4-0.

The Falcons aren’t yet a lock to win the NFC South, though they’re the clear favorite. Carolina is 4-0 but faces a tougher schedule. The Panthers must play Seattle and Green Bay, and they still must negotiate the entire NFC East, with which the Falcons are done. (And against which they went undefeated.)

We say again: The Falcons won’t face another team currently holding a winning record until Nov. 22, when they play Indianapolis here, and they probably will be favored in every game until they play the Panthers in Charlotte on Dec. 13. It’s Columbus Day, and what seemed the toughest part of their schedule is already behind then.

Granted, they were favored Sunday against Washington and came very close to losing. But the odds are they’re going to win many more than they lose before they’re done. Odds are that they’re going to have a Round 1 bye come January.

Hot off the press, so to speak: Under Quinn, Falcons have become a real team.

From Sunday’s game: The frenetic Falcons: Five-and-oh-my!

Also from Sunday: The Falcons’ Devonta Freeman: From second-string to first-rate.

From last week: Roddy White: A good guy who’ll see the light.

Further reading: The Falcons’ outlook brightens with every week.

From the Dallas game: A dominant second half shows what the Falcons can be.

Still further reading: The Falcons have a real shot at a big season.

Further still: In Dan Quinn, the Falcons have their new voice.

From the Giants game: Don’t stop believin’: Dan Quinn’s men are 2-0.

From the Eagles game: A new year: The Falcons dig deep and hang on.

Even further reading: Step 1 for the Falcons: Reclaim lost credibility.

Well, that sure didn't pan out like we thought!  Have to give the Panthers credit for there big win in Seattle today!  However, we still have the much easier schedule and the Panthers still have to play Green Bay and we don't!  That being said, we need to make sure this "mini" bye week results in a win over the pathetic Titans next week on the road.  Then when we do have our full bye week, we play the Dolts in our building, a game we cannot afford to lose! The Panthers certainly took advantage of their bye week by beating the Sea Hawks and we can in afford to lose anymore ground to the rest of the pansies we have on our schedule!  I knew the Sea Hawks would have some serious residual side effects this year after handing the Patriots that Super Bowl on a silver platter last year....and it certainly has!  Did you see them pointing fingers and arguing after that winning touchdown thrown by Newton with 30 seconds to go in the game?  Bottom line: we need home field advantage for as long as we can get it in the playoffs this year!   Yes, if we win next week that will make 3 road wins already this season, but were not strong enough yet to beat the top echelon teams on the road in the playoffs, that's for sure!  At home in our Dome....at least we got a chance!

The powers that be over in Athens need to take note of how a new Falcons head coach turned a losing program into a winning one.

Richt, like Smitty, is a good guy but there comes a time every organization needs new leadership.

@stogiefogey Unfortunately, they're not paying attention from Athens. They're busy trying to extinguish that dumpster fire by the Butts-Mehre building.

Apparently the Spurrier blog has been pulled. Good

He called Bradley out for remarks the writer had made, and it hurt Mark's feelings. So, it made him feel better to get even with Spurrier the only way he could. Through his column.

Spurrier kept college football in its proper perspective.

Its fun, and even though he owned my Bulldogs, his

wisecracking through the years was fun to read. No

program was spared, from " cant spell Citrus ( bowl)

without UT to " Free Shoes University".

He'll be missed. i wish he had coached the Dogs. With the talent Ga has, he'd have won as much as he did at Florida and his wisecracking about opponents would have endeared him to Ga fans like no other.

Niw, i know this is a Falcon article so, let me say

What a nasty article about Spurrier!  Now Mark wants to hide in the good will of the winning Falcons, who I imagine received a lot of this nasty stuff before they started winning this season.  They pay these people millions of dollars to win, they put them in a parity world to sell more tickets and a few of them still win, used to be easy guessing who now not so easy, but the nasty comments arrive before the team does.  Like big Al Davis, the real bum compared to what you try to hang on Spurrier says, just win baby win, and that was long before the big bucks. I think one reason Richt is still at Georgia is because Mark has decided to be nice to a "also run", Mark's sole discretion,I bet the Dawgs would have enjoyed a Spurrier career winning championship record and Georgia would have had one if they had had a coach like Spurrior to go with the players this state produces. That is really what Spurrier has been saying, why can't you win when the AJC ranks your recruiting classes and never mention his lowly class that won their share against the Richt coached teams. Good question I think..

The combined record of the 4 teams that the Panthers have beat is 5-15, three teams that are 1-4 and one 2-3.

I seem to remember that the Falcons must pay Carolina twice in December and it may come down to how they play against their closest rival - it usually does.  Then there's the 'ledown' game between against the Jags.  Sometimes that can jump up and bite a team.

But their confidence must be sky-high right now and at this level, most of the game is played between the ears anyway.  SO just keep the fingers crossed because Mark's right - UGA and Tech are total disappointments (so far) and it's autumn and we need some feel-goods.

@GT71 Jags' tickets are cheap online. Falcons faithful should plan a trip to Jax on Dec 20. A sea of red would stoke the good guys.

How come Mark Richt can't be holding a press conference saying he is retiring, effective immediately?

He is not a drinker so no way to Sarkisian him.  He needs to pull on immediate Spurrier.

Exactly, calling playoffs in week 5. One injury to Julio, Freeman, or Ryan and this team loses 11 straight.

Charles Douglas Edwards
Charles Douglas Edwards

If the Atlanta Falcons can play at least "500%" the rest of the season they are almost guaranteed to be in the playoffs !!!

Six and Five will give them a record of Eleven and Five.

Mark Brat-ley please shut-up. What if - Matt Ryan goes down with an injury or a host of injuries affect the likes of Julio Jones, Freeman etc...? Nobody books anything unless they want to create attention like the kind that requires me to vent when people like you yell no hitter every inning until it isn't so. Can we all just enjoy the moment? I know this is just fun provocation for you but there are some of us who have seen enough blown chances and leads to last a lifetime. Please put the cap back on your Old Boston Vodka, turn off Dancing with the Stars and remove the Skip Bayless screensaver from all of your devices. -i.e.

As for the playoffs, we surely could be one of the teams in that stat to not make the playoffs. We better just take it one game at a time. If anything, our goal needs to be winning the division. We desperately need a first round bye. we need as much time as we possibly can to get Julio healthy, Durant, and hopefully Hester. I am praying that Hester can come back towards the end of the season and give us that special teams boost we desperately need.

Keep improving ATL... Please dont start talking playoffs until we make the playoffs Bradley.

candlin14
candlin14

Being favored and covering is something the FALCONS rarely do. They covered versus the Texans but could not versus the Redskins. I would love to know Atlantas record when they are favored and either completely lose out right or can't cover the spread. its probably worse then our Monday Night Football record.

I will take the W's but I sort of done taking ATL when they are favored.  Until Thursday night :)

@candlin14 Don't think the Falcons give a rip about 'spreads'.  In fact, it's a sucker's game and I like to think that P.T. Barnum was right...

Lets not forget this team is as much a product of the schedule as anything.

And many close wins. Hey I'm happy too but no way this team beats the Packers or Cardinals on the road.

I agree they cant beat the Packers or Cardinals on the road...

Right now!

Still a long season and this team gets healthier and better every week. Lets revisit this question in week 13.

As for the schedule the NFC East is not a pushover. Dont think it has to do with the schedule more than it does that this team is a good team and getting better!

@AnsweredTHIS Well, they have before.  That's why they play the games...that and TV revenue and endorsements and women and big houses and big cars and small really expensive cars....

Dan has 11 more weeks to get his team ready for the playoffs. We seemed to be getting better every week until this weekend but every team has an off week. This was ours and we survived it. we just need to take care of business in New Orleans this Thursday night.

Love CQ and love what this team has done so far and excited for what the future may have in store.  BUT this team doesn't stand a chance against the Packers--would be a repeat of 2010.  Rogers is so freaking good and the Falcons are so flawed.

It's too early to tell.  If they do go to the playoffs, I'm certain they won't last long.  They had a very easy season so far.  They will lose their first playoff game.

What influence does the past have on the future pertaining to the outcome of sporting events? Absolutely nothing. Predicted result of this article: In Thursday's game, on the first play from scrimmage, Shanahan tries to catch the Saints off guard with a Ryan-to-Freeman-to-Jones reverse, but instead all three players collide in the backfield resulting in two torn ACLs and a separated shoulder. Bye, bye playoffs – same old curse of Atlanta.
