Julio Jones is so good he makes opposing fans gasp

East Rutherford, N.J. — These short takes are offered as a companion to the Falcons-Giants game column, which can be found here. The Falcons won 24-20. They’re 2-0.

1. If you don’t see Julio Jones on a regular basis, he’s unbelievable. Even if you do, he’s still unbelievable. As Matt Ryan, who has thrown every NFL pass caught by Jones, said Sunday: “There’s things he does where you’re like, ‘I can’t believe he just did that.’ ” The MetLife Stadium patrons actually gasped when Jones used safety Brandon Meriweather as a catapult to grab Ryan’s high pass from the end zone. The same folks made do with groans when he blew past Prince Amukamara for what was almost the game-winning touchdown. (A replay ruled that Jones was down at the 1.) “He just ran by him,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. “It was just a ‘go’ route; he threw it up in the air and he went and got it.”

2. And how did Prince Amukamara feel afterward? “Julio is one of the best wide receivers in the game,” the cornerback told reporters. “I feel like I’m starting to be one of the best in the game. It was good on good. He just made a play.” Also this: “I felt like we did a pretty good job on him the first half. I think the second half he was starting to heat up. On that play with me, he just made a play.” Reality check: Jones had eight catches for 49 yards in the first half, five for 86 yards in the second. Meaning: He was good all day.

3. And what did Jones have to say for himself? “Every year I challenge myself to get better. You’re either getting better or getting worse — everyone says that, but it’s true.” And how has he improved? “The effort was always there, but I’m wiser.” And what does Ryan think of Jones’ drive to improve? “Sometimes you’re like, ‘Hey, man. You’re doing a great job as it is.’ That’s what makes him the special player he is … I hope he does improve. If he gets better than he already is, that’s going to be good for us.”

Now if we can get Hageman and some of the other players on the team to follow suit, the Falcons will be in good shape.

Mark,

Would you trade him one on one for Odell Beckham, Jr?

Julio Jones:  6'3" 225 lbs, 4.39 40 yard dash, is bigger, faster and stronger than Beckham:  5'11'' 198 lbs, 4.43 40 yard dash.  Plus. Jones is all class while Beckham looks like a clown with the hair and grossly tattooed arms.

Jone in a landslide...

13 catches! That's awesome. Gotta love how Shanahan is getting him the ball. And that catch yesterday. Oh my goodness! Not to take anything away from what was a spectacular play by Julio, but did anybody else think that maybe the ball hit the ground? I replayed it in slow motion about five times and you couldn't tell, but one angle sure made it look like the ball was slipping out and was either saved by the ground or his arm. No way they were taking that away, though.

@khd713 It did show the ball hit the leg of the defender but it never hit the ground! This guy is a freak!!!!! Glad they gave him contract. Blank has said he will be a Falcon for life!

I'm not a fan of the Falcons, but Julio Jones is really good.  If I were a fan of the Falcons I would have an 11 Jones jersey.

Another week of hearing the TV talking heads cry about a great NFC East team blowing a game.

Whatever.  Birds are 2-0.

Mark - appreciate your love for Julio! Sounds like you might be ready to "go down" and roam the sideline with Arthur to sniff some jock straps!!

Julio Jones is a special talent...and getting better.  He's a Pro Bowler. (or will be if he stays healthy).  Terrific asset to the Falcons.  Dimitroff pushed a lot of chips to the center of the table several years ago to trade up for him.  That is always a risk.  Julio has certainly done everything to prove it was a good decision.  If he stays healthy, he easily has another ~8-10 years of top level performance (hopefully all for the Birds).

The Eagles and Giants just got beat by a better team. It's as simple as that. We were two scores down late in the game today and Ryan put together two long drives to score two TDs along with our Defense getting three drive stops at the end of the game to win this game. NY is a tough place to win and we did it. Great Job Falcons....

@Dman Seriously?   The Falcons got lucky.   Drink the Kool Aid if you want but I'll bet they get on their losing ways again very soon.

The Falcons are not cooperating.  Starting off like this is giving the city a bad rep.  That "LOOSERSVILLE" title for the city is in danger of being negated by the likes of the "BIRDS"!  Come on guys, get with the program!  The Braves are doing their part, what's wrong with you?

And everyone thought trading a couple draft picks for him was stupid.  I do wonder who those 2 picks ended up being though. I bet someone out there knows

Love what Julio is doing!  That said, another receiver has to emerge. I don't  want Julio to play himself into a major injury.

Are you an idiot? White put up numbers last week and Hankerson was CLUTCH against the Giants.

Correction, Mark: Matt Ryan has thrown every NFL pass caught by Jones, except for one: Julio intercepted Russell Wilson in the 2012-13 playoffs.

@Kynik Nice catch.  I forgot they put him down in the end zone on defense for one play.

I am a life long Falcons fan and like fans in New York and everywhere else, I cannot believe how great Julio Jones is. That catch to save a interception led the Falcons on to victory. I have never seen anything like it. With Tony Romo with a broken clavicle, The Falcons if we can stay mentally grounded, have a good chance to start 3-0 under new coach Dan Quinn. I really like the way he only talks about getting better. I heard that last January when the Hawks became the first team in NBA history go undefeated for January. GO FALCONS
