The B-backs take a back seat. Tech wins big anyway

These short takes are presented as a companion to the Georgia Tech-Tulane game column, which can be found here. Tech prevailed 65-10.

1. The B-backs played bit parts in this rout. In the opener against Alcorn State, Tech’s B-backs scored five touchdowns and totaled 277 yards on 23 carries. (For those without an abacus, that’s an average of 12 yards per attempt.) Tulane held the three B-backs to 107 yards on 19 carries (a mere 5.6 yards per rush), not that it availed the Green Wave much of anything. The Jackets still rushed for 439 yards. “Today was an A-back game,” coach Paul Johnson said, but three of Tech’s leading rushers on the day were … quarterbacks.

2. A quarterback controversy? Nah. Some quarterback depth? Maybe. The loss of backup Tim Byerly to injury caused consternation among Tech fans: “If Justin Thomas gets hurt, what have we got?” Well, they’ve got Matthew Jordan, the sometime A-back who served as No. 2 quarterback against Tulane and who led the Jackets in rushing. (He had 72 yards to Thomas’ 71.) Jordan’s only pass went for a 35-yard touchdown — “He’s leading the nation in quarterback rating,” Johnson said — and scored on a 65-yard run. As if that weren’t enough, third-stringer Brady Swilling gained 49 yards on six carries.

3. Tech’s defense has yielded 16 points in two games, but guess who isn’t happy. Johnson noted that Tulane was six of 15 on third down, “and that’s better than Tulane usually does.” The Green Wave’s only touchdown came on a 44-yard pass to Devon Breaux — he’d also scored against Duke in Week 1; no other Tulane player has crashed the end zone this season — that cornerback D.J. White should have defended. (Breaux warded off White in the end zone.) Tech did have three sacks, but that, per the coach, was a product of early-down blitzing. “We need to bring pressure,” Johnson said. “We’re not very good at getting it with four people. We’ve got to bring pressure and, to this point, we haven’t been a very good coverage team. We need to sic ’em and go get ’em.”

We have got to bring better Defense.  I watched Tulane on DVR and our D looks very suspect.  It just didn't show up in the score.

I suspect BVG will blitz most of the game this Saturday. PJ will have a plan, I know. This game will test Tech's character. How will they respond to adversity? You know they will face it. Michael Summers, you better be ready son. We need you! Go Jackets!

@GTBee are you Stoned? He threw 1 TD pass and you think he is better than JT?

@Wreck13 GTBee didn't hop on the CPJ train until late last season.  Best to ignore him.  Not too bright.

@Wreck13 I know a lot of STEM guys don't have common sense, but come on dude.  Do you take the Bible literally too?  Clearly a joke dude.  Come on, get it together, regroup, ad think before you type.  It's ok, I get it,  you are probably the smartest engineer at your firm and we will forgive you, with not much room in that brain for knowledge of sarcasm, busting ba$$% or just plain common sense.  Go jackets

@creative read his post on the 9 takeaways and he doesn't seem to be joking at all.

You guys complaining about Johnson's demeanor need to check uga fans. Many of their fan base are tired of the lack of fire and passion in Richt and attribute that to their mediocrity. I don't know if they are right but do know it is one thing they are envious of with our coach. So embrace it. That quest for perfection is indeed what drives our success. The only time he truly seems happy is when he beats great teams. And he seems to be getting happier these days. Let's see what this season beings. It should be fun! Go jackets!! #IHateRudy!

@wreckbone:

Coach Mark Richt has the best won/loss in UGA football history.  As a GT fan, I would like for UGA to fire him.  10 wins per year is pretty lame...

The Triple Option is ALIVE and well in Metro Atlanta. TECH 69-6, 65-10 and KSU 56-16 58-7 rolling up the yard and scores.

I hate it when he gets on the players-like he does---like that really inspires them.

Like Coach Johnson never missed a block in his life.

@bo6830 His actions towards his players has a lot to do with the product we have been enjoying.....it's just part of it........he has 4 NC rings, he must doing something right?

@bo6830 I'm guessing you were never in the Military. I guess you just want to wipe their tears and hand them a participation trophy.

@Wreck13 @bo6830 Your missing the point-I never minded being yelled out in practice, but when your in the game-your head needs to be clear and not thinking about being chewed out for a mistake. Things happen a lot quicker on the field.

@bo6830 said the guy that never plated a sport.  Because CPJ "has never missed a block" he should not light them up for not doing their job?  Next time he should say, "Hey bud, I missed a few blocks whilst running the Wing-T in single A high school ball in the NC Mountains...Don't worry about it.  You'll get em next time.  Don't worry we will all get trophies at the end of the season."

@Iluvnutella hahah you have to know your players. Some need to be yelled at and others need to be talked nice too. I think TUFF LOVE is the term. Asking a player, "What the F were you thinking" after a dumb mistake are words of wisdom.

@Wreck13 @Iluvnutella Never tell a Coach you were "thinking" during a play.......you think in Baseball, you read and react in football.

@TOJacket 49 is Clinton Lynch an O player so yes he has to THINK on plays not react.

They are tackling better in the open field but still bouncing off the sacks on the quarterback.  That said we have a good defense, and this offense is the best we have seen in the Johnson era, next week will be interesting.

All Georgia Teams won...can't we all get along?

Kennesaw State was ahead 58-0 when the 2nd quarter ended with them inside their opponent's 10 yard line.  Wow!

Without their best QB and RB, ND will still be ranked higher - and be favored by the betting crowd (more important) - than Tech coming in.  And that's good.

Strap it on tight, guys, we expect a great effort next week.

And would love a 'W'.

Oh, and BTW...

RUDI WAS STILL OFFSIDES!

@FalconUGAFan Congrats to UGA also!!.........Too bad there are so many UGA fans who think the SEC is stronger than any other conference?..........Auburn was ranked at # 6 before the day started...now they should have lost to Tar Heels and Jax. @FalconUGAFan  whose fn fault is that.  espn doesnt shut up about their golden goose that is a cornerstone  of their fair and balanced coverage. espn. the fox news of sports.

the play offs exposed the sec for the frauds they are.  dont look for any conference named the sec to win a bunch of back to back nc anytime soon AGAIN. unless espn starts using its clout to pick sec favorable match ups and venues like they have been doing the past 10+ years.  the sec is hype and smoke and mirrors.  sec speed?  snicker.  the nfl combines show that for what it is. pure bs.

its a shame that no 6 auburn didnt join no 13 arkansas in losing to a st mary's of the poor team.  tenn or c got beat going away in front of their own crowd.  you dwags need  a qb bad.  oh btw.... lets not forget.... how does a 5 loss team stay in the top 25?  why they belong to the sec of course. see lswho. lmao.

toledo may be a better team the lswho..  and jacksonville state not far behind. snicker

Tampa, I just went over to that impressive SEC Country...........The SEC East was really represented well yesterday...........UGA yawns there way past an awful Vandy team.......don't worry though, I think the dawgs could beat Western KY....Gators and Mizzou beat there lesser foes by 1 score....Gamecocks lose to KY and 10RC blows a 3 score and loses in OT........Jim Mcelwain says that the Gators looked awful and shouldn't have won the game.........keep riding them coat tails!!.......they're not to long right now?
