Tom Brady trashed his cell phone – and his reputation

“Anybody got a phone I can borrow? Can’t seem to find mine.” (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

Just when you think Tom Brady could look no worse, Tom Brady …

Looks worse.

Worse than if he’d never appealed his four-game ban in the first place. Worse than he did when it was only “more probable than not” that the Patriots deflated footballs and that Brady was “generally aware” of the deflation. Worse because this winner of four Super Bowls has made himself seem the dunce of dunces.

From NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s rejection of Brady’s appeal: “The most significant new information that emerged in connection with the appeal was evidence that on or about March 6, 2015 — the very day that he was interviewed by Mr. (Ted) Wells and his team — Mr. Brady instructed his assistant to destroy the cell phone that he had been using since early 2014, a period that included that AFC Championship game and the initial weeks of the subsequent investigation.”

Got that? Now hear this: “During the four months that the cell phone was in use, Brady had exchanged nearly 10,000 text messages, none of which can now be retrieved from that device. The destruction of the cell phone was not disclosed until June 18, almost four months after the investigators had first sought electronic information from Brady.”

That’s our Tom. He throws deflated footballs! He trashes his cell phone! He’s good at working against a Cover 2, bad at orchestrating a Cover Up!

Me, I’d have docked Brady four more games for filing the appeal and wasting the NFL’s time, but I’m not Goodell. I’m also not Tom Brady’s image consultants, all of whom are presumably looking for work as we speak. One of football’s greatest quarterbacks has been recast as an utter clown.

Joke of an article. No proof of cheating. No proof of ANYTHING illegal, but the snarky smug, hypocrites of the media love to attach their unknown names to a star in any capacity.

Tom Brady and Hillary Clinton have the same problem. The 'crime' was perhaps a crime but the cover-up is what gets you in the end.

Advice to Brady: SHUT UP!

Advice to Clinton: Get out now while you still have a chance at NOT spending significant time in jail.

The last time I remember a phone being in the middle of a huge sports news story was the Tiger Woods drama surrounding his beautiful wife (who was a model).  No sympathy for the Patriots gang or their fans.   Brady thinks he's untouchable.  To quote the not so great Al Gore, he's learning the inconvenient truth, along with a few others.  Couldn't happen to better people.

You forgots that Farve sending round pics a his junk. And NFL didn't makes him display the messages like they trying to do to Brady. Why they trying punish Brady for cell phone when they not want Farve to show off his cell phone.

So Mark, you would trust Roger Goodell and the NFL enough to set a precedent and give your phone to the office where everything is leaked? If you say yes, you either have an agenda or you are not very smart.

This is going to end up in court - Kraft just went all in on defending Brady.

This train wreck is going to be worth 4 tubs of popcorn and about a gallon of Coca Cola.  Brady will not come out of this well, but based on his last few appearances in court Goodell will look bad as well.

RichardKPE
RichardKPE

@PaulinNH At this point, Goodell could single handedly take down ISIS and would still have a poor reputation.  The guy turned Ray Rice into a victim.

Bottom line, anyone fighting Goodell these days is an American hero.

Trashed cell phones and lost emails/servers are not treated equally under public opinion. One earns a suspension the other runs for CinC...What a long strange trip it's been.

Brady et al vs The Press. Usually the press gets the last word but to try and place him in the same category as Pete 'The Spitter' Goshen is all wet...There was a quote from somebody that said,'If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin''...Old football coach of mine playing with us boys in a pick up volleyball game didn't rotate like the rest of us. He just loved to put the spike on us kids. When it was pointed out to him that by not rotating, he was cheating. His response, 'It sure beats losing.'...Ob la di, ob la da.

RichardKPE

Bradley, you're so off base on this I'm wondering if you're desperate for things to write about or intentionally baiting me for this retort.

First, the major point: There is not a situation that exists anywhere, ever that would cause you, me or anyone else on earth to hand their PRIVATE cellphone (or any other personal property) over to their employer.  It's beyond laughable that anyone should have expected Brady or anyone else to do this.  If anyone's employer made this request (assuming HR didn't hit them over the head with a 2x4 first) the employee would quit on the spot.

Second:  This is by far the single dumbest story in the history of journalism.  You and your ilk have kept it in the news for over 6 months...that's right, a story about football air pressure for HALF A FRIGGIN YEAR!!!

Third: Brady "wasted the NFL's time?"  Are you serious?  Brady launched a 4 month investigation into himself, and forced Goodell to spend 35 days reviewing a 12 hour meeting?  Brady forced writers to give this ridiculousness the time of day? If anything, Goodell wasted our time with this and will continue to do so over the next year as it plays out in court.  Goodell could have fined Brady $10k the day after the Colts game and this would have been over right there.  For comparison, it took Adam Silver less than a week to banish Donald Sterling (an owner and Silver's boss) from the NBA.

Let's not forget Brady's original response to a deflated football question: "Wow, you guys are really reaching."  That was the single most intelligent and accurate statement to ever come from a professional athlete.

Kelvin
Kelvin

@RichardKPE You're wrong. The NFL never asked for Brady's phone. If you remembered what Ted Wells said you would know that. Mr. Wells told Tom Brady that I don't need to see your phone just read me the text messages pertaining to this investigation and I will take your word for it. Brady still refused and now we know why. On the day Mr. Well was to meet with Brady and his representatives Brady had his cell phone destroyed.

Now do I think the story is overblown? yes, but it's because this story involves the NFL biggest star on one of the NFL most highly profiled teams in the league. Do I think Brady deserves a 4 game suspension? no, but Brady has only himself to blame for that. Brady could have avoided all of this by owning up to his part in the deflategate mess. Only a Brady jock sniffer would think Brady had nothing to do with the balls being underinflated. And if he had just owned up to it in the beginning there would have never been a Wells investigation and Brady would have most likely received a small fine and told never do it again.

colt07
colt07

@RichardKPE Well said. I believe this may be the end of the NFL as we know it. Bottom line to this entire mess is RG suspended Ray Rice for less when he punched out his girl friend. I expect a court to basically say Goddell is so far off base that the commish's office may be relegated to a meaningless position and that could really be bad. All this because RG wanted to make sure all his PC cronies knew he was 'tough onn crime'.

RichardKPE
RichardKPE

@DawginLex @RichardKPE I'm ignoring the NFL's obvious ability to not leak things to the media.  There's no way Brady's google history and pictures of Giselle wouldn't have been trending on twitter within 0.0004 seconds.

Goose Creek Gamecock
Goose Creek Gamecock

@RichardKPE

I've got no dog in this fight, so I'm coming at this from an unbiased point of view. The simple fact of the matter is that the NFL had no legal right to demand the cell phone. They do not have subpoena power. And they obviously knew this because they didn't attempt (or did and didn't tell anyone they tried) to retrieve the allegedly damaging texts from the cell phone provider. This is like the NCAA trying to compel witnesses to testify. They have no legal right to compel anyone to say anything. The only entities that have subpoena powers are the courts.

If, as the report says, that Goodell suspended Brady based on his smashing of a cell phone and no tangible evidence (text messages), they will have a very difficult time defending this action.

Should Brady sue? I don't know. But if he wins, he's going to be even richer than he is now.

@RichardKPE 1st: I would hand over my private cell phone. I have nothing to hide..hmmmmm

@Kelvin @RichardKPE Mr. Wells was hired by the NFL to investigate Brady.  Wells was acting as an agent of the NFL so, by association, the NFL was asking for Brady's personal information...NEXT!

@Goose Creek Gamecock @RichardKPE If I'm Brady, and I have the financial backing of Giselle, yeah I sue.  I don't stop suing.  I'll take this one to the Supremes if I have to.

@TrueFan1 @RichardKPE Fine you bated me:

1.  Oh sure you would hand over your cell phone.  Post all of your personal information all over the internet while you're at it.  Especially all those bank records, family pictures, text messages, etc.  Are you insane?  I don't care if you "have nothing to hide."  Hand all your personal information to anyone and there are no words for the stupidity you're displaying.

2. It's common sense that he lied?  I don't exactly have a reason to think he did or didn't, but why is that common sense?  Isn't it more "common sense" that a whiny losing team lied in order to deflect blame for their ineptitude in the AFC title game?

3.  Again, how exactly did BRADY waste our time?  Did he launch an investigation into himself?  Did he print stories about the incident?

TrueFan1
TrueFan1

@RichardKPE @TrueFan1 1. only a retard would say that one's personnel info would be displayed over the internet. 2. exactly , you don't think.  3. quick , hand brady another tissue.
