Korver is gone, and the Hawks are all but done

Out for the playoffs. Holy moley. (AP Photo/David Goldman)

What hope remained — and not much did — was all but extinguished at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Atlanta Hawks, who already trail Cleveland 2-0 having yet to play away from home in the Eastern Conference finals, announced that Kyle Korver will miss the remainder of the playoffs. That’s just about all, folks.

Not that Korver was having a great postseason. He’d actually had a lousy one. (His 12 points in Friday’s Game 2 were his first double-figure game since Game 2 in Round 2.) But he was still Kyle Korver, one of the world’s best shooters, and attention had to be paid. Now the Cavs don’t have to assign Iman Shumpert to run through screens; he can go pester somebody else.

It’s uncanny — actually, given that we’re talking about an Atlanta team, it really isn’t — how quickly this series has unraveled. The Hawks led by nine points in the first quarter of Wednesday’s Game 1. Then J.R. Smith got hot and they blew the lead and the game and saw DeMarre Carroll hurt to boot, and even with Carroll gutting it out in Game 2 they were beaten badly. And now Korver has been lost and, to borrow from esteemed former colleague Lewis Grizzard, I don’t feel too good myself.

Down 2-0, the Hawks could still make this a series — in theory, anyway. In reality, it’s hard to imagine them forcing a Game 5. Sad, sadder, saddest.

From Sunday’s AJC: A sunny Hawks season slams into reality.

Headline Wednesday morning:  Dream Over, Cavs Sweep Hawks

Dawgilama

Korver is too  one dimensional on offense (his attempts  to create off the bounce in game 2  were  comic) and a  liability on defense.

McGarret

Rise up Hawks. It's one game at a time. Bring that same fire on Tuesday from last night and get it back to Atlanta. I don't expect to win series but you never know. Avoid the sweep at least.

I think this would be a lot easier pill to swallow if it wasn't to the freakin' Cavs and ESPN's golden child, Bron Bron.  But some thoughts:

1) It's hard to beat a superstar-led team in the playoffs because it will always be five vs. the superstar plus the NBA.  It has to take a tremendous amount of discipline and execution to overcome it.  Bulls couldn't do it up 2-1, Hawks haven't been able to do it either, Pacers couldn't do it last year, Celtics couldn't overcome it vs. Miami.  Only Dallas and the Spurs with elite level vets have done it in the Bron Bron era. I can only think of Detroit in the Kobe/Shaq era.

2) Bud just needs to cut it loose this game.  Tell the team to quit playing tight, they've already come much farther than anyone expected. Play loose and fast like a double digit NCAA tournament seed and if it doesn't win, so be it, but don't get run through like the Rockets last night.  That was downright embarrassing.

3) It's too late now, but Korver at his age would be best as a sixth man Jamal Crawford type anyway. As good as Sap has been for Atlanta, Hawks need to let him walk or sign and trade, re-sign DMC, and go find or draft a SG or SF that can create, even just a little, when the offense stalls.  Move Horford to PF, finally, and use a rotation of Muscala and Tavares in next year at C.  Maybe let Teague go if there is any value out there for him and let Dennis have the point. The bench will still have good depth with Mack, Scott, and Baze, and Korver in as a sixth.

Regarding #1: Oh geez, another "blame the refs" post.  The Cavs have been a far superior team in this series, so resorting to describing it as "Atl vs. Cavs and the NBA" is silly.  The Cavs are a much better team than the Hawks, and a big part of that is Lebron.  That is why they are winning.

I should have seen it coming from the "'bron bron" name.

playmeortrademe
playmeortrademe

@ZackR @playmeortrademe

Didn't say anywhere that I blame the refs for being 0-2, but there is no denying the teams with the stars get the calls or the no-calls (see: missed timeout vs Bulls), its been that way for ages, the league has got too $$$$ much at stake not to have it that way.  The team without the star has an uphill fight.  Hey, I wish that the Hawks had a guy with that kind of pull.  Guess Cleveland can thank its luck stars that LeBron was born in Akron.

ZackR
ZackR

@playmeortrademe

Saying that one team is getting preferential officiating due to having a star is blaming the refs.  As I said, the Cavs are giving the Hawks a beatdown in this series, and this old tripe about the league conspiring to advance certain teams is not only unsubstantiated -- it's irrelevant.  Even if the league were in that business, and there's no evidence they are, such interference is not needed in this series as Cleveland is obviously a substantially better team.  The Hawks are losing for basketball reasons, not officiating reasons.

Bug
Bug

Why play the games? Just call Cleveland and tell them we quit.

1. They quit running the offense and if they will run the offense every time down the floor regardless they have a chance.

2. Let the King have his, who cares if he gets 60 as long as the others do not get theirs. Stop helping when he has the ball maybe he will get tired.

3. Take Carroll off the King, he is so tired from defending the King he can not hit a shot or is to tired to shoot.

4. rotate the whole damn team, what have they got to lose?

5. Have some FUN!

6. Forget about Saint Thomas for the present.

It almost looks like their goal to begin with was the "Finals", come on man! As everyone can see in Atlanta those chances come around every 40 years.

Look losing Korver does not have to be a big deal, hell he was ineffective anyway. If you think the right way Mike Scott could be everything we need and more.

The guy has the talent, all he has to do is play within himself, don't force it and stop shooting with his left hand when his right will work better.

The Hawks have gone as far as they can go given the ability of the team

Unfortunately it is disappointing to see them not play that competitively in the two games as home in their deepest playoff run in history

Yes, its a team effort and teams with superstars did win championships with a team effort -- look at the show time Lakers and the 80's Celtics -- to date the best decade in NBA history

The Spurs were the same too

I am looking forward to this new ownership group -- they seem to be the real deal -- we have a very good coach in Bud who may prove to be a great coach and a great brand builder in Steve Koonan.  They must be retained.

The future can be bright, they have some nice pieces on this team but this is not the personnel to take it to the championship final and winning a championship -- one thing the Hawks need is a coachable superstar go to guy

We really cannot complain about the 2014-15 Hawks -- but we have to get better to get where we should want to be

Iluvnutella

The Hawks made it farther than Nique and Doc EVER did.....Grats guys on a great season.

Eastern Confernce Finals.........not too shabby!

Also, a footnote on NBA Basketball. It can be won with a team effort, as evidenced by Spurs/Hawks/ and GS Warriors, who will win it all.

ZackR
ZackR

@Iluvnutella

I'm not sure what you mean by "team effort."  If it means not relying heavily on one superstar, the Warriors do not fit that description.  If it means 7-8 guys contributing, almost every team in the league fits that description.

playmeortrademe
playmeortrademe

@ZackR @Iluvnutella

Agree.  Warriors have a superstar, an MVP, to be exact, on their team, who can flat out take over. Spurs dynasty has had Tim Duncan, not the most marketable guy, but a top 5 player for almost his entire career..

Chris Bleile
Chris Bleile

@Iluvnutella And 2015 Cavs. Have never seen a better team effort. No Love - no problem (JR swish and Tristen Thompson help LBJ. Game 2 No Kyrie, No Love No Problem. Shumpert, Delly, Thompson and James Jones all play well to help Lebron. The cavs BIG 1. ONE TEAM!!!!

Thanks for being honest Mark! Yes, everyone knows it is over. Time to take some chances and try some things Coach Bud! Cavs themselves are missing Love and Irving, yet still blowing us out on our home floor - says it all!

I, for one, never dreamed back in the preseason they'd make it this far. A nice season ending on a bad note. At least we can say that for the first time in a loooong time, there's hope for the future of this franchise. Now, sign Carroll and Millsap and get a decent draft pick.

forexbomb
forexbomb

LOL, it was done before Korver ... Atlanta to get swept...  Pitiful!

moboman
moboman

@forexbomb Not pitiful.  Have to realize that everyone, if asked preseason, would have been happy to get this far.  Being eliminated is always disappointing, but this has been a good stepping stone year.  Have to use this year as an attraction to a quality free agent, and continue the building process.  Hope Ferry is given the opportunity to accomplish that.

Dawggie

Remember the guys who came off the bench with a 20-point deficit vs the Wizards a couple weeks back?  They brought the Hawks back to tie, only to lose to Pierce's lucky bank shot?

Why not start those guys, and bring in Horford and Co as subs?

I'm serious . . .

BobbyDawg
BobbyDawg

The Hawks' three point shooting is worse right now than I've seen it in a while and that's the ONLY answer we have for Lebron James. I just wish we had Domique Wilkins back in his prime. Then we would have an answer.

Was it over when the German's bombed Pearl Harbor?

What is up with all the gloom and doom.  There is still a lot of basketball to be played.  Bazemore and Schroeder will come up big off of the bench.  No reason to fear.

Hate to be the one to break it to the Kyle bashers but here is some info you need to know about KK in the playoffs!

The Hawks have outscored opponents by 60 points when he is in the game and the Hawks have been outscored by 30 points when he is not in the game. Dont believe me look it up or check the bottom line on ESPN.

Know your facts before you bash the man! You dont have to score to have an impact!

Plus/minus is a terrible stat to use for any short time period.  It's far too susceptible to the performance of other players and the variability of lineups generally.

LakeDawg

Actually, I see this as good news. Korver was killing the Hawks. Now Bud won't play him for 3 quarters of the game.

The one thing Atlanta has going is that Cleveland is still the choke capital of the world when it comes to sports. If a team could lose a series after being up 2-0, it would be Cleveland. Play on and play hard. Anything can happen.

Chris Bleile

@hardworkinman Cleveland has never lost a series after being up 2-0!!! Hope you enjoy watching the FINALS on TV while me and other CAVS fans are in attendance!!!

Exceeded anyone's expectations at the beginning of the 2014-15 season. Check! No pinch yourself or slap yourself.

The Hawks have much to be proud of this season. Keeping it in perspective they must remember that the champion Detroit Pistons had to suffer 6 years of losses in the playoffs before they could finally win the Eastern Conference Finals and play for championships. Rome was not built in a day and neither were championship teams like the Pistons or Bulls. Win, lose or draw Hawks, please continue to rise!

This is why I love Mark Bradley...

Hawks playoffs over b/c of KKorver???

The one guy who hasn't done jack!!!!

Korver is 5-22 last 4 games...23% from 3...

When we needed him most, he faded...

Korver shot 86% from 3 in October...

But 23% in May, KK is 34 yrs. old...

I luv KKorver, adamant about his arrival...

But I know his limitations...3pt. specialist...

And when he's off, he's not an All-star...

Reason why he didn't start in Chicago, Utah...

Point is...Hawks not losing b/c KKorver...

Blazemore, Teague, Carroll bone-headed plays...

Missed layups, defensive lapses, turnovers, selfishness....

Just dumb, dumb, dumb...rather see Sweet Lou, Payne...

It is what it is...Hawks not built to compete on talent alone...

They have to play "the right way"...their only chance...

They are not good enough individually to win games solo...

So when they miss open shots...

When they don't pass ahead to open man...

When they go solo instead of set play...

When they don't backside help...

It kills them...

KKorver knocking down 4 threes a game...

Would've been nice...Hawks had fighting chance...

Wasn't happening...addition by subtraction...

Budz gotta get an X-factor....

Get Scott, Mack, JJenkins going...

They can score, put in on floor...create...

But not stiff as a board..

Maybe Budz satisfied...evaluating for future...

Want multiple looks at Millsap, Teague, Korver, Carroll, Antic...

What can they really do when the big lights on?

Nothing, absolutely nothing....

freezboy
freezboy

Hawks are physically and emotionally spent...can't be ashamed of that....Hawks too little..

I cannot believe we are not praising this team for what they accomplished. A never done final four. I would not be surprised if all the players left with such a oh poor us reaction. It is not like they have really been blown out in these 2 games. The effort was there. The shots did not fall. In the next few years when it is back to mediocrity we will be wishing for this outcome. I actually live in the bay area and the support for the Warriors is there win or lose. Negativity is for losers. Go Hawks!!

Delbert_D
Delbert_D

Something that was posted regarding Pero Antic about an hour ago made me think of "specialist" roles. Antic could be a one-shot missile ala Dave Shultz of the Flyers many years ago, and we have the prime target in this round. The NBA doesn't tolerate as much as the NHL did, though, so Antic would probably be banned for at least the rest of the playoffs.
