The Falcons’ Dan Quinn: A good hire who needs to hit big fast

Dan Quinn: Good hire.

Dan Quinn: Better hire than Rex Ryan, IMHO.

Dan Quinn: Probably the best hire possible this year.

Dan Quinn: Had better be a good head coach.

The Atlanta Falcons have spent two seasons losing nearly every smidgen of luster accrued over the first five years of the Smith/Dimitroff era. They’ve lost games. They’ve blown games. They’ve fired the best coach this franchise has ever had, though it must be said that over the final two years that coach wasn’t very good.

They’re kept the best general manager this franchise has ever had but restructured the front office so this GM isn’t doing the thing that was his claim to eminence. They’ve played next to no defense. They’ve built a flimsy roster. They’re building a new stadium and charging five-figure-sums for the right to buy tickets therein. (Not for the tickets themselves; just for the right.) They’re  being investigated by the NFL for pumping artificial noise into the Georgia Dome, and their high-profile owner has lately made more noise than sense.

To state the blatantly obvious: The Falcons need to stop the rot. Dan Quinn needs to make this team win again soon, and maybe he will. He did a stellar job with Seattle’s splendid defense, though it must be said that the Falcons’ defenders are markedly less splendid. (And that defense did yield two fourth-quarter touchdowns that overrode a 10-point in Sunday’s Super Bowl loss.)

But think of it this way: At least the Falcons won’t be introducing Darrell Bevell, the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator who’ll forever be remembered as the man who ordered up the second-and-goal pass that became the title-losing interception, as their new head coach Tuesday. They got the defensive guy. Good choice.

Dan take your time and build this defense right, I am a defensive guy first but you have a hundred million dollar QB, if Brandon scherff fall to pick #8 you have draft him, this will complete the OL.

I say let go head and take care the OL situation that way totally concentrate on defense and get it right.

No doubt coaching makes a huge difference but you better have great players. The Birds have so many slots that needed and update it would be hard to determine where to start. I would hold my nose and go with the OL. James Carpenter will be looking for a team and he would be an upgrade at guard for the Birds no doubt.

Idiots!  The only reason you see AB on the sidelines is because the TV Networks show him.  It's his team.  GET OVER IT!

@BluebirdWings  Idiots! The only reason you hear fake piped-in crowd noise for two damn years is because antsy Arthur Blank hired the unethical sound man. GET OVER IT BluebirdWings!

arthur and thomas will be going down the sideline during games, running things like last year---they know their stuff!!

@MarginalRate That's one thing I hope Mr. Blank stop doing. I use to be okay with that, but it looks embarrassing now.

The Falcons just cannot attract a proven head coach. I wish Coach Quinn the best, but as a 50 year follower the best I can say is "wait and see." I've been burned as a fan too many times.

Did Quinn ask or demand that Artie Blank stay in the owners suite during the 4th quarter ??

If not, did he ask to go up to the owners suite during the 4th quarter and let Arthur run things on the sideline ??

Nah, hitting big early is not as important as building a first-class team. Case in point: Jimmy Johnson went 1-15 his first year with Dallas, 7-9 his second year, and got blown out by Detroit 38-6 in the playoffs in his third year. But he had built a great football team that won the next two Super Bowls. Hitting big early by playing a loser's schedule can be misleading. Like Mike Smith for example.

Hey Quinn- don't forget we only scored 3 points vs Carolina to get in to the playoffs.

"...the best GM this franchise has ever had"

That might be the dumbest statement I've read in years.  Sorry, but to assess this guy as anything but a complete failure is to not understand football.

PeachtreeBart
PeachtreeBart

@DaTruf Then who was better?  Pat Peppler?  Eddie LeBaron was pretty good, but his work led to only 2 playoff appearances, not 5.

didyou
didyou

@DaTruf 2 Executive of the year awards. Thats 2 more than all others combined. 20 games over 500. Never had back to back winning seasons until he got here and then 5 in a row. There is certainly a lack of understanding football.

DaTruf
DaTruf

@didyou @DaTruf

What great talents did it take to grab Matt Ryan or Julio Jones?  As more time passed and his picks took over this team, what happened?  We started to suck more and more.  Who has he drafted after round 2 that would start anywhere else?

This team has been totally ruined by the draft picks he's made.  We have less talent on our team than any other club in the league.

Didyou -you're either delusional or a complete moron yourself.  I'm thinking the latter.

didyou
didyou

@DaTruf @didyou Moron? See thats what I love about these blogs when ignorant MFs  who have never been around the game never mind play it, can make stupid statements and then resort to name calling while hiding behind these blogs to make his miserable life seem like it may have an ounce of value to anyone. Before anyone goes off saying smart remarks like I'm related to him or I'm his wife, let me say I'm a falcon fan and season ticket holder who happens to think he's getting crushed by bloggers and some local hacks. He has made mistakes without question. You made a statement that Dimitroff isn't the best GM this franchise has seen. I gave you evidence to the contrary. (sorry I'll use smaller words.)  He is 20 games over 500. Name another. 5 consecutive winning seasons. Name another. 2 Executive  of the year. Name another. With the addition of a pass rusher with the 8th pick they will have an impact player at the most crucial positions. QB,LT,CB,OLB/DE and top 4 WR. They have 36 million under the cap for FA. Likely a MLB or RT  Dimitroff was hamstrung by Mike Smith and Mike Nolans desire to build a defence from the inside out so we got Jerry Solia and Jackson rather than Matthews, Ware or Orakpo like Dimitroff wanted. Why is it that Quinn referred privately to Dimitroff as the top evaluator in the league and the reason he was going to take this job prior to doing so. But you know better than people around the league.. Ok I guess I should agree with you because of your resume. I'm sorry.

A barrage of cups of ice and whatever may keep Blank off the sideline, but arrests will be forthcoming. Worth it? I'm not suggesting that in any way.

Your calling Dimitroff "the best general manager this franchise has ever had" truly exemplifies what a sad state of affairs this team finds itself in.

Unfortunately he has to overcome the fatal flaw in the front office and the current roster. Maybe he will be successful but the odds are not better than 50/50.

Hard to get excited about a new HC when the guy responsible for the players remains the same.   Cut off the actual head of this snake and I'll allow my optimism to grow.

FALCONS_SORRY

AUTHUR BLANK!    YOU NEED TO STAY OUT OF THE WAY AND OFF THE SIDE LINE AND LET YOUR NEW COACH DO HIS THING!     THERE WONT NO BODY BE THERE TO SEE THE FALCONS WIN IT ALL BECAUSE THE PSL WILL KEEP ALL THE TRUE FALCON FAN FROM BUYING TICKETS!    IF IT WERENT FOR VIAGRA TICKET PRICES WOULD BE THE ONLY THING  YOU WILL GET TO RISE UP IN THAT NEW STADIUM BLANK!

CareySahlbom
CareySahlbom

Well!  Let me say this, awful to pay him for 5 years when most HC contracts are 3-4 year deals. Also, i guarantee you that Quinn/Head Coach will be one of the highest paid head coaches without having proven himself yet. Mr. Blank loves to make a big splash with his money and the media,  i hope it works out for i am sick of seeing a second rate team with no Defense at all, 32nd worst defe3nse out of 32 teams-whew!

i hope Quinn realizes that we don't have the talent it takes to compete for the playoffs and Super Bowl. How does the Falcons fix all the holes next year?  It will take two years at least to rebuild this team.  Mr. McKay/President, states we only need a very quick fix to be in playoffs next year, what a joke!!! i give OC Shanahan two years here, then on he goes to somewhere else,  what has he done? nothing but demoralize the offense with his head strong attitude, doesn't seem to be a fit with HC Quinn, who is the exact opposite, i see conflict already when Falcons start a losing streak again next season. oh well, list could go on but i think we all know this isn't a quick fix,  also should have fired Dummytroff along with Mike Smith.

PeachtreeBart
PeachtreeBart

@CareySahlbom They won four games with Petrino and then 11 the next year with Mike Smith.  So it is possible.  Don't be such a whiner, bro.

regarding the blown lead, I feel it is appropriate to mention that the last four series by the Seattle offense went punt, punt, punt, interception.  No defense can survive too long in this era when the offense is doing that.

redneckrockershurtmusic
redneckrockershurtmusic

Let's hope that as the song goes "You'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quinn." Hopefully we've seen nothing like him in a good way. Considering some of the former coaches we've had, we probably can't say that in a negative way.

OneBlood

McDaniels never wanted to leave the protective shadow of his mentor, Belichick. Because he's already proven what kind of HC he is....so tell us another joke, I could use it on a Monday.

Quinn will get the most out of what is on the roster, but that won't be enough to be Seattle-like on defense. The issue is, and continues to be - what this front office does in the way of talent acquisition. Enter Scott Pioli, and hope he keeps Dimitroff somewhat in the office (and not out in the scouting field).

Dimitroff brought us Sam Baker, Peter Konz, Peria Jerry.

Pioli's arrival includes Jon Asamoah, Jake Matthews, Rashede Hageman (did you watch him towards the end of the year?), Paul Soliai, and (regrettably, the incorrectly used) Tyson Jackson.

Yeah, I'd take my chances with that second group....

GeorgeJetsen
GeorgeJetsen

Hard to give TD any real credit for drafting Matt Ryan, Julio, or Jake Mathews since they were all best available blue chip prospects at the top of the draft. In Ryan's year, there were basically two options- Ryan & Flacco- for the top teams needing a QB to choose from. Either would have worked. With Julio we had to give up the farm in draft picks to get him and his impact has been less than expected- part due to injury and part due to Ryan's inability to stretch the field with his arm. Last year, everyone and their brother knew the Falcons needed OL help and Jake was the best available.

Either way, it's in the later rounds where the good GMs prove their worth and where TD has been a disaster so far.

didyou
didyou

@GeorgeJetsen The year Ryan was drafted most were begging for Glen Dorsey. So it wasn't that sure a pick.  Julio was a great pick considering how close the Falcons were at the time. I'd rather have someone gutsy enough to make a move like that to pick up one of the 5 best at his position, than someone sitting around waiting to have Gabe Carimi fall to them in that spot. Not many talk about the move to trade up to get Trufant. So We are solid at the key positions.

They have 36 million under the cap, the 8th pick and a HC who CAN develop talent. We are not that far off

didyou
didyou

@OneBlood Pioli had no say in Jake Matthews or Rashede Hageman. And while you can mention Baker, and Konz., you should also mention Trufant Julio and Matt Ryan all cornerstones. Peria Jerry was a guy a Mike Smith loved and Dimitroff took him over Clay Matthews the guy Dimitroff really wanted but was told he didn't fit the system. I guarantee you hear Quinn mention how much he looks forward to working with Dimitroff. My friend worked with him in Seattle and Quinn said he wanted the Falcons job because of the chance to work with Dimitroff.
