They just don’t lose. (Curtis Compton/AJC photo)

Fifteen in a row, and they’re not really straining. Fifteen in a row, with nary a fluke in the bunch. Fifteen in a row for the Atlanta Hawks. Fifteen in a row on surpassing merit.

Fifteen in a row, with No. 15 coming against Oklahoma City, which has two players better than any Hawk but a lesser team. Fifteen in a row because the Hawks are getting star-like if not superstar-like performances from someone (not necessarily the same someone) every game. Fifteen in a row, and No. 15 was Paul Millsap’s turn to shine (22 points on 17 shots, 10 rebounds).

Fifteen in a row, and No. 15 also was a night to remember for Dennis Schroder, the 21-year-old German import who scored 13 points and made five assists in 18 minutes. Fifteen in a row, and the guy who was the catalyst in Monday’s No. 13 — Mike Scott — made one basket. Fifteen in a row, and the most consistent Hawk (Kyle Korver) had as many dunks in No. 15 as 3-pointers.

Fifteen in a row, with the next four games and six of the next seven slated for Philips Arena. Fifteen in a row, and darned if these Hawks don’t look as if they could keep going for another 15 or so. Fifteen in a row for a team we Atlantans have tried hard not to embrace, but all of a sudden we find ourselves left with no choice but to hug and keep hugging.

From myajc: At 15 in a row, the Hawks could be just getting started.

The crowd at Phillips on Friday made it feel like a playoff game. Love this team. Time to complete the sale, bring Ferry back and extend Budenholser.

Poor worn out old shabbily dressed Mark Bradley is calling the Hawks irresistible. Typical Atlanta schmutz. Just hope he isn't calling them imperceptible after 40 more games & a round of play-offs. Early don't mean jack in the NBA...

Truly a team where every one of the top 10 players contributes significantly.  However, Paul Milsap is the best player on this team.  Westbrook (OKC coach) decided not to let Kyle Korver beat them so #4 stepped up and took full advantage.  WEstbrook won't make that mistake again.

Thank god we finally have one team and a coach in this town that values substance over style.

Substance wins, while style looks flashy and fancy... but in the end falls flat on their face.

I congratulate Danny Ferry, coach Bud and the players for their commitment to this point. Keep it going!

GO HAWKS..!!. It was great to see the fans fill up the stadium and support these Winners.  These guys make it look easy.  They never seem to get rattled. Even when they are behind. They just go about their business.

Even if the streak is broken before then, all eyes will be on ATL vs GS on 2/6.

We won't really know about the Hawks until the playoffs- unfortunately, the "stars" of the league take the season off and only play when there is a real game to be played.   I am hopeful this team strategy will work versus the "star league"

Ferry put this team together and coach... time to bring FERRY BACK!

 Nothing Racist about this team...

Hats off to Danny Ferry for putting this group together.  He's a businessman and knows what sells......success.  Not an NBA fan but even I've been following them and wishing them well.  No big ego's, letting the coach actually coach and just working together to succeed.  What a concept.  Good luck Hawks!

@BravesFan79

Claiming that Matt Ryan has had more playoff success than all the "athletic" QBs combined is simply false.

1. You do realize that Fran Tarkenton, Roger Staubach and Steve Young were running QBs in college? Somehow I do not think that you did.

2. Doug Williams: wing T quarterback from Grambling State University. Went to the NFC title game with the Bucs and won a Super Bowl with the Redskins. You were aware of that, correct?

3. Donovan McNabb and Steve McNair went to the Super Bowl, as well as to several conference championship games. Randall Cunningham and Kordell Stewart also went to multiple conference championship games, as did Warren Moon. You did know this, right?

4. Colin Kaepernick stinks now? Debatable. But one guy who doesn't is Russell Wilson, who is going to his 2nd Super Bowl. Yes, Ryan was the only guy to beat Wilson in a playoff game. In what was Wilson's rookie year and Ryan's 5th year. The point is that Wilson is 6-1 in playoff games and Ryan is 1-4. (Cam Newton has as many career playoff victories and division titles as does Ryan.) And Wilson has beaten QBs that have succeeded in the playoffs like Kaepernick, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning. Last year the guy beat Brees, Kaepernick and Manning in consecutive games. This year he has a shot at taking out Rodgers and Tom Brady in back to back games. But

Thank you Danny Ferry!  Clearly, he has given Atlanta the right formula for success and we need to bring him back to the arena.  A team that plays like a team which a coach who understands how to make it all work.  Danny! Danny! Danny!  C'mon Atlanta - once we get real owners (bye bye Goofy Gearon!) the Hawks will soar!  Congrats to our TEAM and Coach Bud.  Danny - we forgive you for your misstep, none of us live in a glass house.  You have SHOWN us what you can do and how much you CARE about the Hawks.  I forgive you and cannot wait for new owners to give you even more freedom to build the best NBA team ever!

the management of the hawks, whom the local media has spent 2+ years tarring as 'racist bigots', have actually sponsored the youth sports at the Dunwoody Jewish Community Center for the past 3 years or so, and the players have even gone over there each season to meet with fans.  Basically, they've been involved and accessible.  I'm glad to see the team actually playing well and getting some coverage.  It must upset the folks that were so intent on showing what a diabolically evil slave plantation the management is running.

Great to see the hawks winning... I was there last night and it was a great crowd. The ‘Alpharetta unicorn’ was there also in droves… completely dispelling the myth by Hawks leadership. People will drive and pay to see a good product.Fairly simple concept…

PeachtreeBart

@DoubleDawg Exactly.  The concept not to market to 65% of the metro Atlanta population is over-thinking to the extreme.  When you only market to the 450,000 within the city limits--and even then only to a certain age demographic--you become a tiny market team.  Nonsense.

DawgNole

Bingo!

EVERYBODY, even the nationally (and unjustifiably) scorned ATL fanbase, LOVES--and will support--A WINNER.

MB: "Fifteen in a row for a team we Atlantans have tried hard not to embrace . . . ."

_____________________

There's good reason for the reluctance to embrace: So many painful memories over the past 46 years--and NEVER (in ATL) ONCE making it past Round 2 of the playoffs.

Hopefully this is the team that finally erases those memories.

Absolutely we are. This season's historic run represents a great first step toward what most of us here surely hope will be long-term POSTSEASON success.

This team has a CHANCE to win it all this year, but that isn't what we should be excited about.  We should be excited that we finally have a GM and Coach that understand how to DEVELOP talent and only bring in players that understand the small nuances to basketball.

Sure, ISO basketball has won a lot of titles, but when you don't have a "superstar", team ball can suffocate the superstars and cause massive amounts of frustration.  LeBron was very frustrated after their first loss to the Hawks.

Keep playing team ball and getting it done.  I'm thrilled to finally see a Hawks product that can rival the best in the league.

Remember when people said we couldn't get rid of Josh Smith or Joe Johnson?  Haha...yeah, those guys are really getting it done these days

DawgNole
DawgNole

@SeanLB

Solid post. Sound logic. Although there's nothing at all wrong with being excited that the team "has a CHANCE to win it all this year" Of course, those of us who've been stung so many times in the past by postseason failure may want to temper that enthusiasm just a bit until the early playoff results are in.

As far as Smith and Johnson, It was not that people said we couldn't get rid of them; rather that we shouldn't get rid of them. In any event, it's nice to know at this point that those folks were clearly wrong.

What a great team, that is a good brand of basketball. A ton of fun to watch. Would you switch this team for Cleveland's? Not me.

A buddy texted me about 5:00 yesterday and said he had an extra ticket to the game and asked would I like to go........HELL YEAH!!  Even though he goes regular, he's wasn't a true believer until after last night. They won going away.

I get sick of the those who think they're experts; always talking about, the Hawks don't have a history to achieve.  This is professional sports, what happened in the pass doesn't have a dam thing to do what's happening 1-24-15.  What kind of history the Braves had prior to 1991??  Where did they end up?  What is the history of the Lakers and the Celtics and what good does it do for them today.....1-24-15?   The world is full of want-to-be smart azzes. (LOL)

Wilbo
Wilbo

BravesFan79, you are a racist, mister. I don't care if Matt Ryan is a pretty pink or a lustrous dark green, the man chokes like a dog when big games are on the line. Let this sink in: 7 interceptions (and I don't know how many fumbles 2-3-4?) in 5 playoff games. His record in those 5 games is 1-4. Color of his skin doesn't matter, playoff performance does.

And again we are talking about a Hawks team that has failed miserably in the playoffs, as well. Now we are declaring them the best Hawks team ever after they have completed 54% of the first regular season after an(other) embarrassing postseason collapse.

After 8 games of the current NFL season would you have picked the Colts, Packers, Seahawks, and Patriots as the "Final Four"? First 1/2 of the regular season doesn't mean much as to who turns out to be the great teams of any particular season.

Big Atlanta problem, especially w the idiots who write for this paper - the lack of understanding that professional sports teams have to actually prove themselves as winners over the long term... Seeing something about a team that looks good early in a season? That doesn't mean jack!

@NorthFlaFalcon I was at the Pacers game Wed night. A lot of fun and a great atmosphere.

As well as the Hawks are playing right now, it's hard to imagine any team beating them four out of seven.

Hey Atlanta marketing gurus.... recently tried to purchase an Atlanta Hawks t-shirt for my husband's upcoming birthday on Super Bowl Weekend. Sadly, could not find anything available in any of the large local chains, or even on the internet, just in the average men's size. Perhaps the rest of the world will embrace the Atlanta Hawks when we step it up to embrace our own team by wearing our team paraphernalia, and displaying our signs with pride. Go Hawks!!

While I've been a hawks "fan" my whole life I've generally ignored the team along with the rest of Atlanta. Yep, I'm jumping on the bandwagon how much is a pac man polo

@DannyX Only Bradley, Schultz is still refusing to write an article about the Hawks, since he bashed them (esp. Ferry) in the offseason, so he has a lot of egg on his face right now.  He has written more articles about the Patriots than the Hawks.
