Top 25 for 2015: Ohio State’s No. 1; Tech and UGA are a bit lower

Paul Johnson reacts to the news that Georgia Tech has cracked the Bradley Top 25 for 2015. (David Tulis/AP photo)

As we know, I’m always wrong about everything. And by saying that, I’m wrong again. Because last year I was, shocking though it might be, right about some facet of college football.

Last January, the top four teams in my pre-preseason Top 25 were Florida State, Oregon, Ohio State and Alabama. Those four would comprise the inaugural College Football Playoff.

Yes, I would tweak the order for the preseason version in July/August, ultimately bumping Ohio State down to No. 10 because Braxton Miller was lost. And no, I didn’t have the order exactly right (except for Oregon) this time a year ago, but still: I call ’em as I see ’em, and I take what I can get. Whatever that means.

Enough semi-crowing. Another pre-preseason is at hand, and it will be available in its entirety on myajc and in Sunday’s AJC. I offer highlights here.

My top five is Ohio State (duh), TCU, Alabama, Southern Cal and Michigan State. There are eight SEC teams included, along with six from the Pac-12 and three apiece from the ACC, the Big Ten and the Big 12. There’s one team from a non-Power Five league (three guesses on that) and one from no conference (one guess there).

Georgia Tech and Georgia, both of which just finished in the Associated Press Top 10, are included in this Top 25 but not its Top 10. I have the Bulldogs at No. 12, same as last January, and the Jackets at No. 18, which is different from last January when I had them nowhere at all.

Teams that were considered but omitted include Mississippi State and Arkansas, simply because there’s no way I could put all seven SEC West members in the Top 25. They’re bound to beat each other, don’t you think? (And by now, close readers should know the identity of six of the eight chosen SEC teams.)

Georgia fans will believe I have their team too low. Tech fans will believe I have Georgia too high and their team too low. Ohio State fans will grouse that I’ve jinxed the Buckeyes by putting them No. 1. Jen Bielema will probably never say “hello” to me again after I omitted the Razorbacks. But them’s the breaks. Whatever that means.

Preseason polls are so big of a joke that I do not understand why anybody bothers talking about them. Waste of time. In the next 8 months WHO knows how many players will transfer, or be lost to injuries and or suspensions. Some teams will gel and others will fall apart. It's just another talking point the talking heads have invented to remain relevant during the off season. Quit feeding the squirrels and find something to do until the 5th game of the season when we will have some idea of who is doing what.

And our $4 Million Man has us @ #12 for next year....15 years and counting for CMR in this talent rich area.....I am tired of hearing a recruit was offered too late; under-recruiting in certain areas; still have too many arrests, suspensions and transfers (maybe this will change some w/ Van Halanger gone)...had an under-achieving S&C program (thanks for hiring Mark Hocke)....and to be the last in building an indoor practice facility in the SEC shows the leadership in this program....CMR, TIME TO WIN A NC!!

@RandyHall If our 4 million dollar man is upsetting you think how upset 'Bama fans must be with their 7 million dollar man (that doesn't include this past years 3.6 million dollar mortgage payoff of his vacation home in Austin by the Alabama Boosters Club) that is on a 2 year and counting hiatus from a NC championship :)

All I can say is that Georgia had a good chance to play for it all. We have a mental block against Spurrier that is laughable, but it's there nevertheless. The Florida game was our worst, most unprepared game of the year. We had more talent but were clearly outplayed. The Tech game was ours, until our brilliant HC lost his focus and his marbles, and called for the squib/pooch kick.

I think that SC played one of their best games against us, same with Florida and at the end of the year, Tech was one of the best in the Nation. No dishonor in losing to Tech, they never gave up, but the Florida loss, really did us in....

@TO&HOHO

why don't you two lovebirds get a room. No one can have a semi serious conversation on here, without your idiotic comments. Buckykat and TO, two peas in a pod, lol. Y'all are incurigible...

That's why I kept it classy! Thought y'all would like the "two peas in a pod". It may have insulted TOJacket, lol! He's OK, just doesn't care for many Dawggies....kinda like one Buckykat....

@keendaddy

We ended up 9TH in both polls. Even with 3 loses the Nation knew that Georgia was better than that. One thing that helped Georgia be one of the top ranked three lose team was when Tech ended up with an 11-3 record and barely lost to Florida State , meaning they did have a good team and was lucky to have beaten Georgia .

@keendaddy We were not unprepared for Florida - our players did not execute the game plan they were given. They played like a bunch of selfish individuals instead of doing what the coaches had told them to do - we played selfishly as a defense and deserved the consequences.

12 is fine. Just win your games and shut your trap. Preseason ratings are nothing but fodder. We had the chance to do it on the field but didn't, that's all that matters with rankings. No need to argue about preseason ranking, lol. I think GT is getting jobbed at 18, but just win and don't worry about it!

PaulinNH

Don't we pretty much do this every year? LOL!

Let's just win the one's we're supposed to win, and maybe a couple that we weren't supposed to, and I'll be happy for a change. I'm not happy with Richt right now, but I think we have something in Pruitt and can't wait to see what the new OC has in mind!

@keendaddy I think we're getting jobbed too...............good hearing from you again Keen.

@keendaddy

I agree with you about preseason polls - and this early they are more meaningless.

Last year's preseason AP had Oklahoma 4, Auburn 6, South Carolina 9, Stanford 11, LSU 13, A&M 21,  Only Auburn out of that group were ranked at the end of the season - and they were 22nd.

TCU, Miss State, GT were all unranked preseason.

@MoistDawg @9014EAEO The academics part is obvious with every comment you post................and does 30-24 mean anything to you?...........Y'all might want to have Goldberg come back and take over S&C?

@MoistDawg @TOJacket @9014EAEO No Richard is a Ivy League guy.........we don't need a new S&C coach...............we beat the #2 teams in each of the SEC divisions...I would say we're good.

@MoistDawg @9014EAEO not true?  That OSU was a fraud.  They beat the SEC champ then Oregon...with a third string QB.  They obliterated Wisconsin, who beat a good Auburn team.  But like usual with you, don't let facts in the way.  How about YOU provide us with some proof that OSU is a fraud?

@Moist,

When Richt came to UGAG, he came from a program that was always in the running for NC's.  How has that worked out for UGAG? And speaking of "hisemans", first it was Aaron Murray, then Gurley and now Chubb? Have you guys won more "hisemans" or more NC's?

@OH_IO @Zapp  Actually you are the only one that cares. I know a lot of Ohioans and they could care less about the Dawgs and don't even know the AJC exists.

We didn't learn anything from last season if we have that many SEC west teams ranked.

To MB and the AJC advertising staff ,this new format is going from bad to worse with all of your scrolling and pop up ads continually kicking posters back to the main page, and off the blog they are trying to post on.Hire some real IT people and build a site that actually works and is more reader and poster friendly.

@Buschleaguer

BINGO!

And how about doing something about the onerous sign-in process while you're at it.

Shameful and disgusting is what the new format is.

@Buschleaguer  Mega-triple dittos.  And you didn't mention the problem with typing in the comments area...did my keyboard just get hacked by the AJC?

If I wanted to see the 'front page' (I don't!), I'd click on it.

Come on!  Someone with some scratch PLEASE start a competing news/sports online outlet for the metro area.  Base it in Cobb and you may, too get a subsidy from our spend-thrift pols.

@CynthiaTuckerrhymeswith @Buschleaguer

Hell, it wouldn't take a whole lot of scratch to fix some of the problems with the hideous new format--particularly the disastrous sign-in process. Any IT major should be able to address these issues. Apparently the AJC has none--and is too ashamed to let its readers know that it's simply incapable of fixing the mess we're dealing with now.

SEP-AU
SEP-AU

While it's true that the seven teams from the SEC West are bound to beat each other, that won't happen in pre-season.  So, your logic in not including all seven is severely flawed.  This is your pre-season top 25, right?  I suppose logic just isn't in the DNA for some.

CynthiaTuckerrhymeswith
CynthiaTuckerrhymeswith

@SEP-AU  You are forgetting that MB is simply filling the daily word-count requirement from the AJC.  He needs to eat, hence meaningless, mundane and mincing 'columns' like this.  Total garbage in; total garbage out.
