Bowles would be OK, provided he picks the right man for his ‘O’

Dallas — Esteemed colleague Darryl Orlando Ledbetter reports that Todd Bowles has jumped to the head of the Atlanta Falcons’ search list and could become their coach by Wednesday. (This after Rex Ryan jumped to Buffalo Bills because, as Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports, he wasn’t willing to wait to see what the Falcons would do.) This wouldn’t be an awful development, I submit, Bowles having stamped himself as a rising star for his work with Arizona’s defense.

One nugget does, I’m forced to say, give me pause. D-Led writes: “Bowles could bring Arizona quarterbacks coach Freddie Kitchens or former Dallas Cowboys and Georgia Tech head coach Chan Gailey as his offensive coordinator.”

You’ll remember Kitchens as a not-bad Alabama quarterback in the late ’90s. You’ll also note that he’s a quarterbacks coach, not an offensive coordinator. He has never been an offensive coordinator.

You’ll remember Gailey as the guy who never had a losing season but who never beat Georgia or won the ACC as Georgia Tech’s coach. The worst you can say about Gailey, who’s 63, is that he’s a solid football man. That’s also the best you can say.

If the Falcons are going to hire another defensive coordinator as head coach, it would behoove them to find a hotshot offensive coordinator to round out the effect. Maybe Kitchens is that hotshot. Under no circumstances could we use that term to describe Gailey.

"How is it X Ajc employee Sir Steve Wyche --- is in the know on Todd Bowles before you guys rise out of the bed this morning?"

Because unlike the Falcons, the Jets and the Cardinals actually talk to the media. New York Newsday broke the Bowles hiring before Steve Wyche reported on NFLN.

Hey maybe we get Bowles and Chan to bring in Reggie Ball as quarterbacks coach!

John Fox. He went to a Super Bowl with two teams, including Carolina. He won a playoff game with Tebow. Yeah, he can coach.

Boomer Esiason gave his take on the Atlanta Falcons coaching search and PSL's on his morning show. It's at youtube/user/jmnga20.

After listening to this, it gives some idea about the moolah involved with this new stadium. While crying broke and who had the money, they could have paid to remove FIVE churches.

Let's face it...there is no pretty girl left to ask to the prom.  We're now hanging out at 4H and FFA meetings to see what's left.

Hotshot is not a term you would apply to Gailey, Vanilla is more like it.

John Fox is available.  There's your guy with experience.

@FredMacmurray  I'm sure the Falcons will interview him. They've interviewed everyone else. As For Chan Gailey?  I'd just as soon see June Jones III as OC. Bring back the chuck and duck.

Chan Gaily? You have to kidding, right? As for your esteemed colleague, the man has never written one sentence in the English language without both grammatical and punctuation errors in it. Never. Not once. You are losing all credibility Mark.

As a GT alum and Falcon fan, the mention of Chan Gailey makes me want to vomit. Please, no. I cannot bear to watch another Chan Gailey coached anything.

Rex Ryan isn't the magic bullet.  He took the worst job on the table.  I'm sure he loves the Buffalo D but seems like he did not learn his lesson about the problematic QB position while at the Jets.

Todd Bowles may be the right guy.  Only time will tell.  OC choice will be interesting - Falcons should make it clear that he can't bring Chan on staff.  Gailey is utterly predictable. Bad thing for a play caller.

When you run a business you should always know who you want to replace key members of your team, particularly in a business that has a limited pool of labor.  The fact that Blank apparently did not have a replacement selected before firing Smith is an indictment of Blank's ability to lead.

I feel like we've botched this like only an Atlanta sports franchise can.  While I don't have much of an issue with Bowles, I believe that Quinn from Seattle has done similar things but at a higher level.

If Bowles is our guy, then let's roll, but I still believe that Ol Rexy would have been the best hire for where our franchise is currently.

GTBob

Gailey had terrible offenses at GT, a terrible offense in Kansas City, and mostly average offenses in Buffalo. Why in the world is this man still being considered for OC jobs? He hasn't had a good offense at any level in the past 14 years.

I'd much rather have Dirk Koetter than Chan Gailey.

At least hire a coach from a WINNER. First we got Jacksonville retreads, now Arizona? At least we didn't end up with mega-loser Rex Ryan.

Maybe Gailey could help Johnson with some recruiting in his spare time.

@96JB Maybe Johnson could show Gailey how to run an offense in his spare time.

IF Blank is soooooooo good at Business decisions how is NOT HIRING REXT RYAN A GOOD BUSINESS DECISION??? This guy would have brought instant publicity to Atlanta, something this football team needs. This coach would have brought some Defensive Swagger, something the 32nd ranked defense needs and this coach would have brought a new GM, something this team desperately needs. All of you idiots complaining about getting Rid of Thomas D. but not wanting Rex are complete fools. You cant get one without the other.

I don't know if you can fairly compare either Kinchens or Gailey's college performance to their NFL performance. I think I remember Nick Saban doing pretty poorly in the NFL.

DanJohn

@Farcas  Chan Gaily was a combined 34-56 as head coach of both Dallas and Buffalo. His resume in the NFL is not good.

It will be Quinn or McDaniel - mark my words. Ledbetter likes Bowls and is floating this out there in the hopes it will help his cause.

The head coach is more about organization, managerial skills, and openness to new ideas than anything else.   If Bowles has those three attributes, he'll be just fine.   If he doesn't, we'll need another coach in a couple of years.

I freely admit that there's a part of me hoping this hire blows up in Blank's face, just so he won't be able to sell PSLs in his taxpayer funded stadium.

The PSLs are not going away. Get over that.

And unless you stay at an Atlanta hotel your tax dollars are not going to the stadium

It would be like the Falcons to hire Chan Gailey and bring his no imagination, cloud of dust offense to Atlanta.

TampGator1

The team that gets the Seattle DC will be getting the best head coach from my view.  He has done great things everywhere he has been.  But he is not polished and I am sure that is big in Blank's book.

D. Orlando Ledbetter working for a newspaper. Only in Atlanta.

Falcons brass, coaches, administrators, reporters, bloggers.... Idiots all.

This is what you can pretty safely bet on in this situation. The clown suited Home Depot Mannequin will let his extremely over-inflated ego get in the way. He will make a bad choice for head coach. The dimwits who write for this paper will go into a numbnutt frenzy making the hire out to be absolutely genius and certainly indicative of soon to won Superbowls.

The Falcons will be the same ol' sorry team when it matters.

There is absolutely nothing remarkable about Bowles.  He took over a great defense two years ago, kept it great for one year, and regressed this past year.

Sure makes me want to spend $180,000 on four PSL's @ $45,000 each!

What a joke of a Falcons front office.  Three GM's on the staff--all are head cases. The Falcons are not going to be able to get a highly qualified HC due to this GM set-up and an owner who is not qualified to hire the Head Coach. In fact he was not the mastermind of Home Depot, it was Bernie Marcus with Blank doing the PR events and visits.

They should wait and get Quinn from Seattle! He will sign if Blank pays him more than the Jets. Plus he has done this year in and year out in Seattle,  Bowles is a good candidate but not the elite HC the Falcons need. Just look at the way Seattle plays defense -- so much more inspired than the Arizona Cardinals did this year. Especially after the way the Cardinals played poorly  the second half of the regular season and first game in playoffs.  Quinn will get a highly qualified proven OC,  not a Chan Gailey or Kitchens who has no experience!!!

@CareySahlbom ...Quinn wants no part of Atlanta.  He's from NJ, and wants the Jets.  Plus, he doesn't want any part of Blank-McKay-Pioli-Dimitroff.
