Braxton Miller leaving Ohio State for FSU would rock college football

New OrleansTom D’Angelo of the Palm Beach Post, our esteemed sister paper, is reporting that quarterback Braxton Miller is considering transferring to Florida State, where he would be able to play immediately seeing as how he has already graduated from The Ohio State University. Should such a thing happen, it would be the biggest transfer college football has seen since … Russell Wilson from North Carolina State to Wisconsin? Cam Newton from Florida to Auburn by way of junior college?

As we know, Florida State has a redshirt sophomore quarterback who hasn’t lost a collegiate start and has won a Heisman Trophy. His name is Jameis Wilson, and everyone figures he’ll be leaving for the NFL after Florida State plays its final game. Miller was supposed to be a Heisman candidate this season but got hurt in August, clearing the way for J.T. Barrett to lead the Buckeyes to an 11-1 regular season, whereupon he got hurt against Michigan.

Which enabled Cardale Jones to make his first collegiate start against Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game, which Ohio State won 59-0. With Miller, Barrett and Jones all having eligibility remaining, the 2015 Buckeyes figured to have the greatest rotation since Glavine-Maddux-Smoltz. But football is different from baseball: It’s hard to find room for two good quarterbacks, and there’s no way to accommodate three. (Assuming all three are healthy.)

Asked about Miller at Wednesday’s press briefing, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said: “Yes, I’ve had conversations (with him) and someone hit me with that today.  I don’t expect that.  There are a lot of things that go on out there that is out of his control as well. So we’ve had conversations and I expect him to be back at Ohio State.”

Quarterback transfers are a big deal in college circles. Most folks in Tuscaloosa figured Jacob Coker, who’d transferred from Florida State, would be named AJ McCarron’s successor, but fifth-year senior Blake Sims of Gainesville emerged as the starter — and ultimately as the MVP of the SEC championship game. This week Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin said of Sims: “To see that attitude pay off is great. You just don’t see it in a time when you’re looking to leave if it’s not going your way.”

Back to Miller: If he winds up at FSU, the Seminoles will be reset in a way nobody figured they’d be in Year 1 post-Winston. Ohio State will be lessened from a talent standpoint but boosted in terms of clarity. (Having too many quarterbacks is an issue few schools ever encounter, but how could any school placate all three?) And — looking way ahead here — the field of the 2015 College Football Playoff mightn’t look much different than the one we see today.

Ohio State with Barrett/Jones. Florida State with Miller. Alabama with Saban. That would leave Oregon, which will surely slide with Marcus Mariota gone. But, according to D’Angelo, Miller is also considering the Ducks. For all the fuss we’ll make over the high schoolers on Signing Day, the biggest move of this offseason could be made by a grad student.

From myajc: Oh, happy day. The College Football Playoff is here.

Also from myajc: Urban Meyer is again driving in the fast lane.

Yet another from myajc: The brat redeemed — Lane Kiffin as Alabama assistant.

It's a shame that either Ohio State or Alabama with their two snot nosed, arrogant, lying punk coaches will win.

Florida State has a graduate school, come on!  Can you get a masters in trapeze, juggling, or water skiing?

Can't wait for Alabama to hand OSU a beat down.  Boy are those Buckeye fans going to be hiding under their desks.

TCU would have been a far better choice but the ESPN homers were swooning for a chance to make OSU pertinent again.  I have never heard such drooling when I heard those OSU alums on ESPN cry for their beloved Buckeyes to get in.  Let the beating begin!!

@TheTrain If OSU had a more experienced quarterback they would win this game and the next. Fortunately for Alabama, they are facing a second time starter and third string quarterback - that's the difference in this game.

No matter what the outcome of this game, OSU will be back again next year with a great team. Hopefully they'll see Alabama again next year.

OH-IO......

14 to 0, Boise State.  Maybe they should be in the playoffs instead of Ohio State as well.

@OH_IO

Neither is TCU......but they should be.  P.S.  Boise now up 21 to zip.

If Ole Miss had the two missing WRs and their OTs in the game, they would have lost 42 to 10 instead of 42 to 3.  TCU looks like the best team in the country to me.  Great on offense and defense as well.  Speed kills and they have a ton of it.....and toughness as well.  I would take them over any of the 4 playoff teams right now.  What a shame they did not make it into the playoffs.  Not a big enough brand name compared to Ohio State, I guess.  But they sure look like a much better team to me.  But I think they are better than Bama and Oregon as well.  And a ton better than FSU. The playoffs should have been Oregon, Bama, TCU, and Ohio State.....and in that order.

You also thought that Will Muschamp was the greatest HC in the history of football, so I'll take your opinion with a grain of salt.

Probably.  Not sure Florida will.  But maybe Roper will be free to call an open offensive scheme now that Muschamp is gone.  I know that scheme lies in Florida's future.

Maybe. Hard to say without head to heads. They gave up 58 to Baylor. Ol Miss was done after the first  trick play to go down 7

I do think TCU proved that they belonged in the playoff over Ohio State today.  Let's see if Ohio State can prove that they belong there over Bama.

Hpw 'bout that B10! Just be glad you did not have to play TCU to get into the playoffs.  Based on what I saw today, TCU might be the best team in the country.  Might not be close.

TampGator1
TampGator1

@OH_IO

There is not much difference between teams after the first 6 or 8 teams at the top.....maybe more.  Ole Miss was missing a lot of key players today.....but they would not have won with them.  But TCU is underrated for sure.  They should be in the playoffs, no doubt.

TampGator1
TampGator1

@OH_IO

They did not have their two top WRs today.....including Treadwell, one of the top players and playmakers in the country.  They were also missing their two best OL. They were a much better team with those players on the field.  But Ole Miss was overrated most of the year.  So was Miss. State.  The SEC was down this year, no doubt......other than Bama.

TampGator1
TampGator1

@OH_IO @TampGator1

TCU was missing several of their players on defense for that game and let up when they got up on Baylor.  You can't do that with Baylor.  Ole Miss does not have that kind of offense.

Before Miller transfers, you have to figure that FSU would first want to give him a tryout.  Maybe drop him off at Publix without a dime, and see what kind of seafood he comes out with.

If he goes anywhere, it might be to LSU.

Thanks to certain people dropping TCU, which crushed a team in their last game, from 3rd to out of the playoffs for some reason.  I wonder what that reason could have been?  TV MONEY?  Of course it was. The NCAA and ESPN does understand brand marketing after all.

@OH_IO The TCU vs Ol Miss game proves the "committee" got it wrong by letting Ohio St. in the playoff.

OH_IO

@TheRealJDW

Actually, I expect Alabama will win the game. According to some, the Buckeyes have 5 or 6 players that would start for Alabama - not enough. They say we're still a year away. Next year we'll, according to some, we'll have 11 or 12. I tend to agree.

I won't be surprised at an upset.

Big plays, turnovers, internior line performance, special teams, field position - as usual - will determine the outcome.

One thing I know, I will not be riding other coattails and I won't disappear like  a TON of wuss dogs after getting beat by Tech.

The Buck Eyed Peas have a real good shot of upsetting the Tide, I feel  Depends on how well their 3rd string QB plays.  He throws the deep ball very well and Bama does not cover those very well.  But I think Bama wins a close game.

TampGator1
TampGator1

@twentysixpointtwo

Nah.....FSU was not good enough to get in.  But hard to turn down the defending national champ with an undefeated record.  But TCU would stomp all over FSU.  I think the Buck Eyed Peas would as well.  But I am not a big fan of FSU to begin with.
