More McGarity: UGA’s indoor facility wasn’t a big deal, but now it is

The AD and the football coach. (Curtis Compton/AJC)

Most of the Q’s and A’s from Wednesday’s 30-minute interview with Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity can be found on myajc. Here were two snippets.

Asked if he believes Mark Richt is capable of delivering a championship, McGarity said: “Until I’m convinced he is not, then I believe he can.”

About making coaching changes in general: “You have to be 100 percent convinced that it can’t work. If you get to that point, you make the decision. Which has had to happen in five other sports (in McGarity’s four-plus years as Georgia AD) … I think I’ve shown the ability to be able to make changes, not only on coaching staff but administratively, too. Yes, I have the confidence and the ability to make that assessment.”

And now here’s a bonus track, as they say in the music biz. As we know, the lack of an indoor practice facility has become a flashpoint for Georgia coaches, who believe they really, really need one to keep up with the Butch Joneses of the SEC. (Tennessee has one. Heck, so does Georgia Tech.) Here was McGarity’s take:

“Georgia spent $33 million on the addition (to Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall) that was completed in 2010. (McGarity started as AD in September of that year.) That was four years ago. That would have been the perfect time, if the emphasis was on an indoor building, to do it. That had been on the drawing board since 1999 and 2000 – that never got off the ground. I come in and I’m moving into a brand new building and the indoor facility was not on the radar.

“Let’s fast-forward to 2013, to where it does become important. The first thing we do is talk about it; we have an allocation for the research for our athletic board, which was granted; we’ve selected an architect; we’re in the programming stage right now. When we meet with our board in February, we should have more information on cost and location so we can start the fund-raising.

“Once it was identified as being really, really important — I don’t know how important it was in 2009 or ’10, but if it had been that important, it would have been done at that time – so while it wasn’t that important and we played football outside and that’s the elements we need … (pause) … things change. We react to that.

“There’s a couple of other things that Mark really wants to do that just came to our attention like renovating the football locker room at the stadium and creating a recruiting room in the stadium. Well, once he made me aware of those two things, they were automatically put on our radar. But a lot of times it’s got to be the coach expressing to us what’s important. My question to coaches is, ‘What can I do to help you?’ And if I don’t know about it, I can’t predict what they want in that vein.”

And now, if you’re asking: “Do you, having spoken with McGarity for half and hour, feel that the rumors of a growing tension within the athletic department are overstated?”, the answer is …

No. I do not.

So, McGarity, let's get this straight, you come in as AD and you don't see the need for the indoor facility, HCMR apparently doesn't mention it either. What, you suffer from chronic cranial rectius? 10 wins are important for HCMR, what has he won, tell me? Do you realize HCMR won his east championships when FL, TN were off their games. HCMR won almost by default not by anything he has done to produce a National Championship Team. It appears UGA continues down the ADVD route, absolutely no vision for success. UGA should get rid of you and HCMR! TN HCBJ and new FL HCJM will rule the SEC East while you and HCMR suck the money out of UGA producing absolutely nothing but excuses.

@USMC6511

Couldn't agree more!!! Mark Richt has really displayed how awful he is the last two years. With all of the horrible clock management coaching decisions Mike Smith has made in the same state, Mark Richt fails to manage the clock versus Tech and then squib kicks the kickoff about 20 yards allowing Tech to kick a FG.

Richt is a SCRUB!!! McGarity is a CHUMP!!! Both together make a mediocre football program with ZERO results. What would be great is if Granthem holds UGA to 7 points this bowl game and really puts it to Mark Richt. Believe it or not, as much as I hated Petrino for doing what he did in Atlanta, I think he is one hell of  a College Coach and would surely love to see him get a shot at UGA!!!!

Yep, a new indoor facility (about six years behind schedule) and a room full of Fatheads at the stadium should put us over the top for maybe 2017 or 18.     New facilities and fund-raising dinners/socials are an AD's dream for resume building.

I guess a championship banner is the only thing we'll have to wait on-  oh, and a new HC.

Now that I've vented, I'm going to Belk to see if I can return a pair of polyester pants my grandmother bought me in 1999

Yes People are really getting annoyed with McGarity. Seems to be clueless as to doing anything to improve salaries, facilities and with second most profitable football program. Just what does this AD plan certainly the only thing I am seeing is what this program go down hill.  He seems to be happy with mediocrity at ever level.   We know he was brought in by that meddling Mike Adams.  It is a program that does not strive to be among the elite in the SEC.  How much long are the booster, fans and big financial supports going to support mediocrity.?

McGarity = McEgo...straight out of the Dooley mold. Quit worrying about the coaches at Georgia....the REAL worry is at the AD position.

DawginNY

Give me a break.  This guy is completely full of it.  The indoor practice facility was not on the radar until 2013?  The AD can't provide what he doesn't know about (unless the coach of the respective sport tells him about it)?

If McGarity doesn't stay on top of where UGA stands in terms of facilities in ALL sports, particularly the revenue generating sports, then he should be fired yesterday.  And this non-committal "we'll evaluate our coaches at the end of the year," is BS.  That's fine as a process, but unless the coach's future is truly in doubt, the AD shouldn't leave any ambiguity in his comments.

Richt is paralyzed by his method of playing not to lose.  This causes poor decisions consistently in high pressure situations. He is also stubborn and refuses to change when evidence clearly says he should.  Without change you fall further and further behind the changing times and this will be the history Richt leaves at Georgia.  History will not be kind to him or McGarity.

@Dealbreaker If you think is resistant to change then you clearly haven't been paying attention to the Georgia football program since Pruitt came aboard. Hello!

@PigIron @LostBurro After watching Tenn.'s horrendous offense against Missouri at the end of this season, I can't see where you're coming from on your prediction. The Vol's offense is absolutely horrendous and they don't look very well coached in any facet of the game.

The Vols haven't been relevant in 7+ years and I don't expect them to be a contender next year.

Pay Bobo because he recruits South GA, so great and he is a very good QB coach.

Free up some of that money and get an indoor practice facility while your at it.

Greg McGarity, August 13, 2010:   " . . . we will compete for SEC and national championships the right way.  We will have very high expectations, and every sport will be expected to be competitive with our peer institutions not only in the classroom, but also on the field.”

We are a mediocre 45-21 since this tough talk with no championship.  We are a paltry 7-15 against "peer institutions" (ie. ranked teams) since McGarity's tough guy John Wayne speech when he arrived.

Greg McGarity=ALL TALK, NO WALK.

You know...I had high hopes for this McGarity.

But he has been a big disappointment.

All talk.  No action.

@UnbiasedObserver  "We will compete for SEC and national championships . . ." in 2010 but in 2014:

“I’m not going to talk about anything else other than what we know we have to do to get our 10th win and finishing as high as we possibly can in the rankings,” McGarity said in an interview with The AJC on Tuesday. “We’ll evaluate our season when the season is over."

So he's going to come in and talk big out of his behind about championships when he gets here but after actual games get played (and lost) its not time to talk about that stuff anymore.  Talk big in August but December is time to "evaluate."

That's what I'm getting out of this.

I bet Richt wishes for a coaching rumor involving himself, instead of Bobo.

That way he could get the new contract and raise BEFORE the bowl game, a la 2011.

@Dawggie He just needs that 10th win to wrap up both of them..............continuity baby!! Yea!!

Instead of just one man, how about you have a group of people decide what is important for the department .... maybe like an ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT BOARD!!!!  Instead of just rubber stamping anything the coach thinks he need, how bout you ask him to win something of significance before he gets his little projects done!!!!

You might want to rethink that one.

@TOJacket @OH_IO We own this state?  That is the funniest thing I've read in a long time.  Tech will NEVER own this state.  They may get lucky every 6-7 years but they will never own this state.  They need to worry more about Georgia Southern passing them now that they are out of the old Division II level.  Tech had to have a bad referee call to beat them this year.

@kerryb @TOJacket @OH_IO we DO own this state...got the Governors Cup to prove it! We were fortunate enough to beat Georgia Southern, though! " … things change. We react to that."

McGarity and Richt are two peas in a pod. Not an ounce of difference. They are constantly in "react" mode because they never have a plan. They fly by the seat of their pants...and their not very good pilots!

Great leaders have a strategy for every conceivable possibility. They have a plan and can RESPOND confidently and positively regardless of the situation. Then their are the McGaritys' and Richts' who, with no plan, REACT negatively or do nothing. All too often the outcomes are costly in terms of lost time and opportunity for McGarity and team losses for Richt.

You can not over emphasis the Louisville game no matter how hard the AJC, or Georgia tries. We couldn’t get up for it so we just went ahead and embarrassed ourselves like Central Florida or last year is not going to get it. Richt loses that game and he should be in hot water, this is a season bowl games matter, the country is back interested in them, trying to figure what is hype and what is real, is the Big 12 really better than the Big 10, and is the ACC that bad. A statement by Louisville will go a long ways next year to having people look differently at the ACC and the SEC east. Then you throw in some bad chemistry of who is coaching and you got a real problem. Point is don’t make this a holiday, spend time with the family have fun, I was a better man than let this get my attention, this is your job. And for God sakes stop with the Bobo stuff, nobody wants him, cut his salary and he will still be there.
