Live from Charlotte: Can Georgia Tech (sort of) shock the world?

Charlotte — Discerning readers will note the presence of an parenthetical in the above headline. That’s because Georgia Tech beating Florida State would, at this late date, come as a major shock to absolutely no one. So many people — I’m among them — are picking the Yellow Jackets that I’ve half-wondered if they shouldn’t be favored over a team that hasn’t been beaten in two calendar years.

But there’s an even bigger issue afoot, at least if you believe Brad Edwards of ESPN Insider and yours truly. We kind of decided — actually, Brad decided and I concurred — that Tech has a real chance to make the College Football Playoff if six things happen. Two already have. Oregon beat Arizona 51-13 on Friday to remove the Wildcats from the ranks of the two-loss contenders, and TCU beat Iowa State 55-3 today to keep the Horned Frogs from becoming a two-loss team.

Now Tech needs Alabama to beat Missouri, Wisconsin to beat Ohio State and Kansas State to beat Baylor. As I write, Bama is leading 14-0. The other two games will be staged tonight, just like the ACC championship here.

About which: It has been raining most of the day, but it’s supposed to clear a bit this evening. I guess that should help the team that runs the ball more, which is Tech, but wet footballs tend to have minds of their own.

In other news, Tech coach Paul Johnson was given a four-year extension — through 2020 — today. In sum, there’s much to discuss. That’s why this live blog exists. Feel free to avail yourselves of it, but one warning (or depending on your point of view, one cheery note): Due to the logistics of a night game, I’ll have to be writing other things in a hurry, so I’ll be popping in and out. But even in possible absentia, I thank you in advance.

Art Briles is on ESPN making a strong case for his team.

Going into the Big-10 CG, OSU had played the 60th toughest schedule, their overall body of work is no better than TCU or Baylor.

No reason for OSU to jump into the playoff based on 1 blowout win vs. a bunch of Peter Konz type OLs for Wisconsin.

Enjoy the Orange. Watch out for snowbirds. They drive worse than the transplants in Atlanta.

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Dalvin Cook for them and Smelter for us.  However, I think we saw what we can expect from Waller next year

Hate to lose, but this was respectable.

This GT team never stops. Great game...

Our guys played their hearts out.  Couldn't be prouder.  Now, got to win our bowl game.

I am shocked that there wasn't even one turnover.  When is the last time that has happened?

KKA
KKA

@GTRay There was 1 turnover. Justin had 1 interception.

It looked to me like JT5 threw a punt or a jump ball.

I'm not sure DW ran the wrong route, GT and JT5 have been throwing the back-shoulder come-back route all year and in this game JT5 was throwing the ball deeper.

Maybe JT5 was at fault?

Oops, my bad.

See people, it's not so hard to admit when you're wrong.

Birmingham _Jacket. Close but not quite right. Win it all is the only acceptable season ending game.

Will McCarron's mom be at fsu-bama game to interpret Winston's speech?

What a game! Go Jackets! Note, we lost three games by a TOTAL of 13 points. 13 points.

The Noles had all they wanted. I think if we had Smelter we would have won!

@Iluvnutella @grh0317 Thanks.. That hasn't been mentioned at all! Go Jackets

and let's see if we are picked to finish 5th in the Coastal next year!

At this point in the season ALL TEAMS have inured players out, you don't use injuries as an excuse in FB

They're not my fellow fans, but I'm sure they have heard it.

Last I saw they they had lost a Heisman candidate for 6 games and replaced him with a T-fr. that racked up a 1,000 yds. while only starting half of a season, given that fact ,maybe  they already know.

Really good game. Credit Florida State for playing its cleanest game of the season, and it was needed. Tech made the 'Noles work for everything. Jameis Winston was really good tonight, but Dalvin Cook was the difference -- 177 yards

@MarkBradley I disagree.  The two main issues: (1) D was not a ball hawk, no turnovers, (2) not having Smelter was a killer on O, Waller was not in sync with Thomas.

Great season Jackets.

A win tonight would have been gravy. The mission was accomplished last weekend. This Tech fan will take a victory over UGA every single year over an ACC Championship.

We should be Orange Bowl bound.

The delusional GTBob would strongly disagree with you that your win over UGA has any meaning at all.

I don't understand this! How could Georgia Tech lose the ACC championship game? Isn't Coach Paul Johnson supposed to  be a footbal genius?

Birmingham__Jacket

Lots of talent discrepancy. Jumbo Fisher gets his talent to win unlike a certain coach in this state.

Iluvnutella

@NYdawg  I don't understand this! Don't the dwaggs have the best 4/5 star players.....our high school offense and 2/3 star players beat u....STFU.

Tech wins that game in regulation by 14 points if it weren't for a homer call by sec refs on that goal line

@NYdawg

After CMR's squib kick that GAVE AWAY a rivalry game, you might want to tone it down a bit.

By the way, which Championship did you leghumpers play in?

I missed that. lol

@Iluvnutella @NYdawg nope. But we OWN Tech. Enjoy the 2nd out of 14. You'll be back in the losers column next year.

So STFU

HotDawg

@grh0317 @NYdawg 12 Out Of 14. Try to win more than 1 every other recruiting class.before you tech geeks mouth off.

TexGT

@NYdawg He is a genius for beating a 5-star laden UGA with 2-3 star talent, and nearly taking down Forced Sex University.  Its actually pretty pathetic you lost to GT considering the discrepancy in talent.

LuxLucisofVerum

@RuePaulJohnson @NYdawg you mean like that LAME on sides kick cost you any shot at a recovery LOL You're funny throwing stones at CMR after that little debacle of execution.

RuePaulJohnson
RuePaulJohnson

@LuxLucisofVerum @RuePaulJohnson @NYdawg

On-sides kicks only have about 30% success rate, so the PK screwing that up is much less horrible than CMR's decision.

If CMR simply kicks it deep to a team that HAD NOT gotten to the 25-yd. line all day on KO-returns, then UGA easily wins that game, even if GT has a "good return" to the 35-yd. line GT still loses.

The only decision worse than that one was when Stoops at OU re-punted to a very dangerous PR that is clearly the fastest man on all levels of FB, the original punt was fair-caught at the 15-yd. line but Stoops re-punted for some reason and the guy they call "Warp-Speed" housed it.

CMR only makes $3.3MM per yr. while Stoops makes about $4.6MM per yr. so that makes Stoops decision worse than CMR's by a hair.
