Tech’s Paul Johnson: For one year, UGA doesn’t run this state

Athens — These short takes are offered as a companion to the Georgia Tech game column, which can be found on myajc. Tech beat Georgia 30-24 in overtime.

1. Paul Johnson was gracious in victory. Given how much grief (not least in this space) the Tech coach had taken for losing five consecutive games to Georgia and for going 28-25 over a four-season span, it wouldn’t have been terribly surprising if he’d taken this victory as reason to crow. To his credit, he took the high road. He expressed admiration for the Georgia program. He praised his players effusively, which Johnson doesn’t always do. Only when prodded about the meaning of this game did he say, “It means (the Bulldogs) have to take down that dumb ‘We-Run-This-State’ sign for one year.” And then, when it was noted that his offense had hogged the ball for most of the second half, he smiled and said, “Sometimes the high school offense will help you like that.”

2. Tech didn’t sound like a team ready to stop winning. “Ten wins doesn’t happen very often,” Johnson said, “and we’ve got a chance for a couple more.” He meant in the ACC title game against Florida State and in what figures to be a rather nice bowl. But B-back Zach Laskey aimed higher. “With the College Football Playoff, anything could happen,” he said. “It’s an outside shot, but anything can happen.” The Jackets entered Saturday’s game ranked No. 16 in the CFP rankings and beat No. 9 Georgia, which should give them a bounce. It defies credulity that Tech could rise from 16th to fourth in the span of eight days, but if enough higher-ranked teams lose and the Jackets finish on a closing kick of beating Clemson, Georgia and FSU … well, who really knows?

3. This was a pretty fair day for the basketball league. Tech beat Georgia, which hadn’t happened since 2008. Clemson beat South Carolina, which hadn’t happened since … er, 2008. Louisville beat Kentucky, which happens often but resonates now because the Cardinals are in the ACC. And then Florida State did its usual dance-on-the-lip-of-the-volcano number before outlasting Florida. The final day of the regular season had become a source of ACC embarrassment at the hands of its brawnier neighbor, but this time the conference generally considered the nation’s fifth-best went 4-0 against the league generally considered the best.

Obviously after the entire is over it looks like the ACC is not nearly as inadequate as most people consider it.  It looks like most sports writers are letting their football allegiences color their objectiveness.

The ACC is not the best, but it has some very good teams and most of them are well above average.  Just like the SEC, B1G and others, there are also a couple of really bad teams in it as well.

You guys should take a deep breath.  You sound a lot like the trailer park trash GA fans we all dislike so much!

The Tide is high and they're rolling on; they're gonna be #1...#1....

I just can't help but feeling....Sorry uga fans; you have a fair team...but not a great team that wins championships....and all your wishing doesn't count, ok??

There is a new movie coming out soon:  Dumb and Dumber Part III staring Mark Richt and Bobo.  UGA's defense can't take all the heat for the loss -- in the second half, the offense did very little to give them a rest.  UGA's offense didn't even show up in the second half.  And why did UGA at the end of the game keep trying to run Chubb up the middle?  They should have run Michael to the outside with his speed and power.  And we have got to get some stud receivers in our recruiting class this who can fly.  Even Bennett wasn't reliable yesterday -- they should have kept throwing it to Rumph.

Take heart,  uga fans, at least you're retaining your well deserved reputation as America's most mediocre college football team and with any luck at all you'll achieve your annual goal of attending yet another obscure, irrelevant bowl game or be able to watch such an event on your 1990 sorry television set at your cozy, but drab double-wide trailer in trailer parks all across the state of Georgia....all while sipping on the best Pabst Blue Ribbon beer one can hope to get at their local 7/11

Good news for UGA  is that PJ will be around another 5 years after beating UGA.

btw dwags... all those refs you were complaining about?  not acc refs but sec refs. maybe richt can send game film to the sec offices and have this loss overturned.

after all isnt that the kind of shenanigans that you secheaters do?

@ThebigWally @420 bulldwag you didn't listen to the call-in show after the game.  plenty of georgia fans were complaining about the ACC refs.

maybe the dwags should take a couple of courses at a REAL university.

all things considered over  a 14 year span...... maybe they should take a course load of classes at geprgoa tech that teach you how to OVERACHIEVE!!!!!!

have the yEVER over achieved under richt?  routinely a top 10 recruiting class year in and year out.  what do they do with their talent?  certainly not a whole lot of winning much of anything worth a hoot.  the dwags are firmly entrenched as a middle of the pack performer in the sec east that juggernaut of fb. lmao.

state's flag ship u.  gorgeous campous AFTER they pick up and 'wipe' it down from those proud dwags leaving 80 tons of trash and 'bodily fluids'  in open class room and the library. 80% of the fb fans in the state are all dwags. lots of burger kings mcdonalds and piggly wigglies in georgia that keep all those dog graduates home to cheer on their team. snicker. and they have all those courses to hide sa who are really not students  but wannabe pro players so they dont flunk out. they have they even have espn as their very own propaganda machine.

yes they rule this state most of the time but i gotta ask....with all the advantages they have over tech how do them manage to lose to tech at all?  even ga southern has more students than gt and when is the last time ga southern beat ugag?  never!

maybe you dwags can add to your trophy case.... fulmer cup champions, runner up trophy, wcs mnc trophy, trophy for winning those recruiting battles, preseason ajc no 1 vote getter.....

uga underachiever trophy

@420 bulldwag Man UGA is really in your head...if you're this miserable after a big win..you must be a joy to be around when Tech doesn't overachieve and loses a game.

Let it go man ...you overachieved and won...sad sad man

Congrats to Tech on a well earned win . If you scroll down and read a large number of responses it's hard to tell that Tech won. Whining about the refs, taking shots at players, generally acting like what you accuse the Dawg fans of being....poor winners. I honestly think you will never be happy about anything, and being miserable is the life path so many have chosen.

Chill... relax...you do know Tech won...right...winning is a good thing...now try to show us what a classy winner does, just so we will act better for the next ten or so years.

Never mind...you are what you present here....real winners.

@Greentow @VegasDawg Proves my point...thanks...to answer your question, A very good friend (huge lifelong Tech fan) died this year and nobody was as happy for him and his family  than me at the end of the game. My brother is a Tech grad, and I called him when the game ended and felt nothing but happiness for him. It hurt some but Tech and it's fans don't own me as it appears UGA does for many of the people posting today.

Thanks for your concern about my pain, but I can take it every 6 or 7 years. As for you I wish nothing but a feeling of happiness and satisfaction, after all it's been awhile.

Someone asked why Isaiah Johnson got the number one when he was a freshman?

You found out yesterday if not during the Miami game and other times why that decision was not left up to u.

Only 2 touchdowns by an NFL offense against a high school defense. I can't believe it.

Whats the point of having all those 5 star studs ?   Who needs em  ?

Tech actually won twice yesterday plus they had to beat the refs. So we are actually 3-12 over the past 15.

DawgnIT
DawgnIT

@wreckmaniac No, Tech is 2-12 versus UGA and the refs because the entire world knows that every year the refs are against Tech.  It doesn't matter if it's an ACC or SEC crew, the fix is always in against Tech.  Tech would have national championships every year if it weren't for the refs.

HuckFinn1835
HuckFinn1835

@wreckmaniac  yes..but the gawga bullfrogs were handicapped with a rather "dull head coach"...They only keep cmr because he's so good at helping five star players convert to two star players in almost no time at all. And besides, the gawga bullfrog fans will still get to go to their annual obscure, irrelevant bowl game to face another equally irrelevant team (if that is even possible). I've got to go; I'm making plans to attend the ACC championship game in Charlotte against FSU. I wonder what uga bullfrog fans will be doing next Saturday? They'll probably be watching us win our ACC conference championship game over the Seminoles from the cozy confines of their drab double wide trailers all across redneck Gawga neighborhoods while sipping on a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer that they buy from their local 7/11. They'll enjoy a real football game...watching real champions play.

The No. 1 rush defense in the nation still can't stop us with 4 extra defenders aiding their cause. For example, how dare the refs not call forward motion in JT's favor. He was either in the end zone or had ceased forward progress and the whistle should have blown the play dead (for those UGA degenerates who didn't receive an education, cease means to stop). Secondly, obviously this high school offense works because even after the downright thugs on Georgia's defense manage to knock our best player out of the entire game and potentially out for the season we were still able to overcome it and win, and even after the bias refs reffing the competition call countless calls in favor of the home team, Georgia Tech and Paul Johnson adapted and discovered a way to win. My third point, I don't give one on what you want to say about georgia tech not having class after the game. Your entire team did nothing but hit key players after the play to ruff them up. Great, the 10-2 team commonly known as the Yellow Jackets, ripped up hedges that will grow back in 2 months and stomped up a G that was made of spray paint and can be repainted whenever. "To the victor go the spoils." What a great way to end he 5-game skid we had by showing those convicts WHO RUNS THIS STATE. WE RUN THIS STATE. now that you are done reading this you incompetent "Dawgs" you can go back to flipping patties and filling shopping bags.

Greentow
Greentow

@theramblinwreck Whether there was a whistle or not, forward progress was clearly stopped if no TD was scored, and the play was clearly dead.  It should have so ruled.

Congratulation to GT on their win at UGA. I am a UGA fan but GT played great and took it to UGA. Best of luck next Saturday. I would love to see GT the ACC champion.

We won, we beat UGA *and* the refs.

(Justin Thomas had crossed the plane of the goal, and the internet is near universally incredulous that the whistle wasn't blown on that 'touchdown return'.  Even spotted a touchdown- UGA still loses).

Keep the excuses and complaining coming, mutt fans.  It only makes this more enjoyable.

@TideDawg ...The dogs should have lost by much more than 6 points.

GT handled the dogs on the offensive line and the stud runner was a

fullback named Laskey..Your players get tight and the dogs did indeed

lose because of coaching, GT COACHING AND TEAM EFFORT.

Expect more and more...

DawgnIT
DawgnIT

@grh0317 @TideDawg Whatever.  Tech should have won by 6 points.

Both teams made big plays on offense and defense.  Both teams had big special teams plays as well (UGA's fake kick and Tech's pooch kick).  Both teams made mistakes but at the end of the day Tech's overall effort was 6 points better than UGA's.  Enjoy the victory and quit trying to look for more.  It was a great rivalry game and what both fan bases should demand from their respective programs.

I'm disappointed that UGA lost but it was fun to watch and I actually feel good for Tech fans.  We need more Hate games where both teams are near the top of their conference.  I'm pretty much over one team being decent and the other being crap in this series.

If you want to split hairs, UGA's 2 fumbles at the goal line were unforced by anything Tech did and we wouldn't even be having this discussion had they opened a big 1st half lead.  So don't sit here and say Tech should have won by more than 6.  Because the fact that UGA failed to capitalize on moving the ball up and down the field on Tech with ease kept them in the game.  Tech is a very good team and anytime you leave a very good team in the game you're probably going to lose.

Hopefully Tech will beat FSU and have even more to pound chests about for the next year.  UGA needs to feel some local heat to get this program where it needs to be.  It's been too easy to point at Alabama, LSU, Florida, and Auburn having great runs but it's another thing for Tech to start one.

UGA has some soul searching to do after this one.

codawg
codawg

@Greentow @DawgnIT @grh0317 @TideDawg It's tough.  The cameras did not show the "pile" clearly.  If the ball was moving free and the ref saw it, then you have the answer.  And there's no reason to complain about the refs.  It's part of the game.  Always has been.  Always will be.  It was a sloppy, exciting game on both sides of the ball.  In this game, Ga Tech won.

For the Dawgs, it's just a bad season.  Losses to Florida, South Caroline and Ga Tech coming off of bye weeks (yes, I'm counting CSU as a bye) is something the ad, coaches and players need to analyze.

As for the SEC vs ACC, I would not get overly excited until it starts to happen on a regular basis.  I mean, every little brother wins once in a while.  That's okay.  It helps build character.
