Chubb? Great. Mason? Very good. UGA’s offense? Superb

Athens — These short takes are presented as a companion to the Georgia-Charleston Southern game column, which can be found on myajc. Georgia won 55-9.

1. Given that this has become a Short Takes staple, let’s get it out of the way: Nick Chubb is tremendous. Todd Gurley, lost now to knee surgery, was the best back in the nation. Chubb is nearly as good as Gurley, which is to say Chubb is about the best in the nation himself — and he’s a true freshman from Cedartown. He only carried nine times against Charleston Southern, but his second rush went for 83 yards and a touchdown. It was the longest run by a Bulldog since Tim Worley fled 89 yards against Florida in 1985 in a famous 24-3 upset of the nation’s No. 1 team. Chubb’s 113 yards made him the first back under Mark Richt to break 100 yards in six consecutive games. Think about that. Musa Smith didn’t do it. Knowshon Moreno didn’t do it. Even Gurley didn’t do it. Chubb just did it.

2. Don’t look now, but Hutson Mason has become a pretty fair quarterback. For the second time in three games, the fifth-year senior (but first-year starter) threw more touchdown passes (three) than incompletions (two). His first pass, on Georgia’s first snap, went to Chris Conley for a touchdown off a lovely play-action fake. His best pass — a laser of the sort Matthew Stafford used to deliver in this stadium — produced an even better catch from Conley. It wasn’t so long ago that some Georgia fans were calling Mason a weak spot. Today I ask: How many better quarterbacks are there in the SEC at this minute? How many better passers are there? Understand: I’m not saying Mason is better than Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott, but as a throwing quarterback, Georgia’s man is right up there.

3. Nobody, Mark Richt included, catches more grief from Georgia fans than offensive coordinator Mike Bobo — who once again has had himself a fine season. The Bulldogs have scored 63 touchdowns in 11 games. The school record is 72, set over 14 games in 2012. This has been accomplished with a new quarterback, with Gurley missing four games to suspension and now gone with a torn ACL and with receivers Jonathon Rumph and Justin Scott-Wesley only now getting healthy. For the second time in three games, Georgia didn’t punt. It entered the game leading the SEC in total offense. We can quibble over not giving Gurley the ball on first-and-goal against South Carolina, but we cannot quibble with the overall effect of this raging offense.

The only joy I will have losing to the Dawgs this year is that pretty much all of their fans will be pulling for the Jackets next week against FSU. I think the consensus is that everyone hates the Noles. Is this a fair assessment, Dawgs?

@TideDawg  With your 9-3 team and your perennial mediocrity, the Gawga Bullfrogs will yet again be invited to an obscure bowl sponsored by a car rental company. LOL! There might be trailer park hotels in Nashville for the "Dawg rednecks" if your irrelevant team can somehow get invited to the Music City Bowl.

Hutson Mason is GREAT ?  Excuse me, 1763 yards passing ALL SEASON LONG and 17 rushing yards on 38 runs, is GREAT ?

Not hardly.  Had he played well against Florida (31 UNANSWERED POINTS) or South Carolina (deer in the headlights), we would be in the Play-Offs whether we lost to Alabama or not.

As it is, with ALL THIS TALENT ON THIS ROSTER, Hutson Mason shot this season to heck in a handbasket, wasting what should have been better than # 89 in the nation passing.  We've NEVER been this bad at passing.  Just think what might have been with a REAL QUARTERBACK.

Next season, we will have one in Jacob Park or Brice Ramsey.  Heck, even Faton Bauta is a BETTER QUARTERBACK than Hutson Mason.

Neither Brice Ramsey, who I called for before the game against South Carolina (lousy team, worse secondary) or Faton Bauta, would have LOST to that miserable South Carolina team this season.  And, giving up all those UNASWERED POINTS against our # 1 Rival, Florida, who has 6 wins on the season  - the same 6-win season as South Carolina has too I might add - is another HORRID LOSS.

Hutson Mason has LOST to 3 UNRANKED FOOTBALL TEAMS, South Carolina, Florida and Nebraska.

@HuckFinn1835  Be a man about your # 52 average recruiting class actually being on the same field as Mark Richt's # 9 average recruiting class.  You run in here pre-game every year BRAGGING A BLOW-OUT OF BIBLICAL PROPORSIONS  since 2001 and beat him once by 3 points.

HuckFinn1835

@ThomasBrownUGA @HuckFinn1835  Our #52 recruiting class whipped your "world-beater 5 star" athletes a few years back. It's the coaching; the team in yellow consistently has far better coaches than the mediocre and irrelevant team in red/black...It's just that simple. Enjoy Nashvile; they may even have some trailer park hotels.

You'll need them at kickoff. UGA's strategy for getting into any kind of championship game is to depend on 'others"....Your mediocrity is a bit "dependent" ......Have you tried an addiction school to rid yourself of your habit??

Even as good as they are now, if Arkansas loses Friday, they will not have been able to overcome the bonehead play at South Carolina nor the unpreparedness at jacksonville.  Does that count for anything?

We have had season tickets since 1977, I was luckily enough to be in school in 1980 and attended the FL game and NC game in New Orleans.  Sure I want to experience that feeling again. But I would not sell my soul like FSU has done to do it. Everybody bitches about Richt, but how many active coaches have won NC's? Five. Unfortunately, two of them are in the SEC, as well as 6 out of the last 7 National Champs. Do you think we could hire one of those away from the other school? I don't think so. So you go out and hire another coach who also has not won a NC. I am like everybody else and scream and holler when when lose and mope around all day Sunday, but the next Saturday I am putting on my red and black and driving to watch them play, Go Dawgs!!

dawg fan

@bulldogsteve  You don't have to sell your soul.  That's just an excuse that you Richt fans have created as a crutch for your hero. Its embarrassing.  I guess I'm not as big as a fan as you but I see a program and a university that has everything that it takes to win it all, except the right head coach.  Sure its hard and very few schools can do it.  I think we're one of them though.

Like I said though, I'm obviously not quite the fan that you Richt Super Fans are.  See you at the Outback Bowl.

SkokieDog
SkokieDog

@bulldogsteve I'm surprised that you didn't cite the Tennessee example for us. Too many U.Ga. fans seem to believe that only bad outcomes could follow a change in the head coaching position in Athens. Some of us have more faith than that.
And don't forget, it's not just national championships that have eluded the 'Dogs. In recent years, they haven't even won the conference championship.

UGA is the lousiest two loss team in America.  They always choke in big games.....Ie...SC and FL.......

The bullfrogs mediocrity will get them to a car rental bowl......maybe. A 9-3 regular season is pretty sorry for a team that recruits so many five star players and coaches them down to pay like two star players...And of course their "autograph skunk" won't even be playing....Oh dear Gawga!

I've said this over and over....and now I'm hearing it from football analysts that know more about the game than I do. There should be 8 teams in the playoff. There are some really good 2 loss teams that should be considered.

On a different subject: If Kirby Smart should happen to get an offer for a head coaching job(and take it).....Muschamp could end up at Alabama as DC. Most likely Muschamp will end up at Texas A&M, South Carolina or Auburn as DC.

@TideDawg Speaking of coordinators.  Its not about total season output.  BOBO always has good numbers.  Its the lack of preparation/having no clue when it comes to prepping for big games.  look at UGA points in these big games.  BOBO gets out coached, just like in SC when in retrospect "maybe i should have given it to gurley on first and goal:  No crap sherlock!.  i do like richt and hope we keep him around.  i do not want to become the next Tennessee, Florida, Arkansas, Michigan, etc.  One thing is for sure though, if we go 0-12, we are still better than OSU.

TideDawg
TideDawg

@gtcaryd @TideDawg  Can't answer that one!! You can speculate all you want to but when it comes down to what is best for the team.......Go with the best available.

TideDawg
TideDawg

@JPDawg @TideDawg  I have to wholly endorse your comments.

However, every team goes through those bad years. Nobody has figured out why, yet. Something evidently happens to the entire program's mindset about winning. I've suffered through two of those lean years at Ala. and at least one at Ga. To turn a program around that is in the losing mode takes one heckuva coach and staff. They have to get rid of almost the entire team through recruiting and weeding out the losers. Ark. and Tn. are on the way back and will be tough to deal with in the future.

OSU ain't bad! But they are over rated!

SkokieDog
SkokieDog

@JPDawg That's right: whenever a team changes head coaches, losing becomes a way of life. I'm sure that if you ask fans at Auburn, LSU, and Oregon, they'll tell you how long it took to recover from losing their successful head coaches.

Whiznot

Chubb is awesome. Mason deserves even more credit than Bradley gives him today. Bobo has delivered the best offense in the SEC. I'm glad the Florida is looking for a new head coach with previous head coaching experience. Bobo to the Gators is my worst nightmare.

dawg fan

Anyone who thinks that this team is not capable of being at least 10-1 right now with the SEC East wrapped up and a spot in the playoffs on the table IS NOT A REAL FAN.  They are a phony poser who cares more about the head coach than the program.

The schedule set up perfectly.  We've got a running game.  The defense is rounding in to form at the right time.  We've got great players and great chemistry as a team.  We shouldn't have to sit at home and hope and pray teams like Tennessee and Arkansas can do our dirty work for us.  That is EMBARASSING and there is no excuse for it.

Mark Richt has failed this program once again with his inability to prepare his team for a FULL SEASON of football.

From an outsider's perspective, your team had off-weeks before playing 2 teams that turned out to be mediocre with huge flaws (S.Car. and Florida), why blame CMR?

At some point the players have to show discipline and dedication to the FB program when they are away from CMR and the FB Staff.

My HS HC used to tell us that there are 168 hours in a week and if you are a screw-up for 4 hours on game day then you were probably screwing up for the previous 164 hours that week.

The NCAA only allows the coaches 20 or so hours per week with the players and after that it is ON THE PLAYER'S to be disciplined off the field so that it doesn't affect their play on the field.

It is not a coincidence IMO that UGA played well with no bye weeks and played  crappy following their only 2 bye weeks.

Instead of blaming CMR, why not blame the players for too much drinking, partying, skirt-chasing, and weed-smoking.

If the PLAYERS can't control themselves off the field in off-weeks leading up to RIVALS like S.Carolina and Florida, then you can't put all the blame on CMR, at some point the players should want  to beat  their main rivals also.

Just an  outsider's opinion.

dawg fan
dawg fan

@RuePaulJohnson @dawg fan  Fine, let's not blame Richt.  And he can return that $3.2 million salary too so we can hire a real coach who doesn't need people making excuses for him and isn't afraid of a little accountability.

Great idea.  Thanks.

@OOH-IO How many did your dawgs get out of the UF game?

TideDawg
TideDawg

@OOH-IO  You can't knock a team for winning or how they win,.... only losing is the important part. Check with FSU. They have escaped numerous times this year......but they are still undefeated. Playing a team that is a 30 pt. underdog is difficult to get up for anytime. A coach can't convince 18-22 year olds that a weak team can play above their talent level and make a game out of it. As has been the case throughout history....young people always think they are smarter than seasoned adults.

You can check any team in the running for the final 4 and somewhere during their schedule they had a scare from a team that shouldn't scare anybody.

Well I see even in a blowout victory the trolls and pseudo fans have made this board into a cesspool of griping and of course the usual hatred.  It's a sickness and I am tired of dealing with it.  Nobody is discussing the game, they are venting their past gripes because there isn't anything bad to say otherwise.  I am sorry but people that do that are just sick.

I may show up on these blogs a few times here and there but I am done with this BS.  Those of you that call yourselves Georgia Bulldog fans and spend your time on these blogs spewing nothing but complaints, you are have a sickness and I am done with dealing with it.  You are not anywhere near being representative of our fan base and if you believe you are then you have more serious problems than just being habitual complainers.

Real Dawg fans, there are other places to discuss Bulldog football.  Places where people talk about the team and don't spend every word in some diatribe about firing Mark Richt.  Real fans.  And no, they don't always agree and they don't sugar coat the short comings of the program.  They just don't spend every moment complaining and intentionally ignoring the good things that happen and have happened in their obsessive quest to see Mark Richt fired.  That is where I will be.

Have fun wallowing in your sickness.  I don't have to deal with it and I won't.  Oh and I sure hope you find a cure to your kool aid obsession.  You really need to see a doctor about that.

gtcaryd
gtcaryd

@DawginCO Oh, yea CO...........you're going to deal with it...........is this how you acted when you were a child? @gtcaryd Actually, I think that he's afraid that our "sickness" may be contagious, and he's isolating himself from the infectious nature of our comments. But keep in mind that my reading is only the opinion of a stupid person (i.e., one who is unable to see that Coach Richt is in fact infallible, or at least a truly great coach).
