For Richt and UGA, yet another inexplicable loss

Jacksonville, Fla. — Did I see this one coming? Obviously not. I didn’t think there was a way in the world a pretty bad Florida team could dominate a pretty good Georgia one. But seeing was believing, even if it really wasn’t.

I know what happened — the Gators rushed for 418 yards, fifth-most in school history and the second-worst in Georgia annals — against a opponent that entered with the SEC’s second-best rushing defense. I’m just not sure how it happened, or why. Neither was Georgia defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, who spoke in more ephemeral terms: “Sometimes it’s about getting off a block. It’s about who you are and what you’ve got in you.”

Put simply, Georgia got bullied by a lesser opponent. (When last seen, these Gators lost 42-13 in Gainesville to Missouri, which Georgia had beaten 34-0 in Columbia.) It shouldn’t have happened, but it did. And when something like this happens — and it happens more than occasionally to Georgia — we have to ask: Is this a reflection on Mark Richt?

The answer: Yes. He’s the coach. It’s his program, his players. For all the good Richt has done since coming to Athens, his teams have lost enough of these inexplicable games to keep them from playing for a national title, and surely this 38-20 loss, coupled with the 38-35 defeat at South Carolina on Sept. 15, will deal them out of the College Football Playoff even if they up and win the SEC.

Maybe it was too much to ask of Georgia, playing without Todd Gurley for four games and with a halting quarterback in Hutson Mason, to win it all, but the road was paved for them to give it a go. Instead they lost to one of the worst Florida teams of the past 35 years, and they didn’t just lose — they were routed. Holy mackerel.

You just cannot make $3MM a year and make the kind of mistakes he makes. If he was a CEO he would undoubtedly be fired. We have the best athletes (he is a good recruiter) but continually fall short because of coaching errors - all the SEC Championship 2 years ago and the Auburn game last year. We need accountability meaning we need a change. Just the real issue is that he is as dumb as a box of rocks.

what is this, the 14th season at uga. same results. 2-3 + losses not including the bowl. as i have said many times ga must be satisfied with mediocrity. mark rickt not a championship caliber coach.

Well they only had 2 weeks to prepare for a mediocre at best,  team with no QB passing game, and they totally screwed it up. waited til 4 quarter to bring safeties up to stop the run.

Inexplicable loss, I don't think so. More like an inexcusable loss...

Anybody with any sense of recent history can tell you that this is typical of Richt.

The smiling on the field after the game really did it for me. He can't be gone fast enough.

@DiehardDawg

Certainly doesn't sit well after a performance like that. But I think most of us have known for awhile that winning big games is not necessarily his top priority.

Buck Belue is really TESTY on his 680 Radio show today. He has more excuses right now than an Obama Voter.

@22Shamburger buk has to suck up to richt / mcgarity to get inside access for interviews, comped seats, parking, food, drinks, benefits.,....  no big deal

Sure it's a big bloody deal : He is after all Buck Belue.  He has to answer to himself as you do to say it's not big deal.

Cease with the bloody excuses !

EVERYONE ELSE has.

There was an article in the AJC (I think by Ken Sigura), that researched the last 32 teams that fired a coach with a winning record.  Only 9 did the same or better.  That means 23 did WORSE.  Are the UGA Faithful really going to fire Richt over a 2-3 loss season?  You could go the way of Florida, Texas, USC, heck...Texas Tech...and turn a very good program into a crappy one real quick.

Even as a Tech fan, I would not like to see that happen.

Thoughts?

Lambert Dawg

@GT-UT  Agreed !! How refreshing to have an honest and objective post and from of all people - a Tech fan.  These people who want  fire Mark Richt are:

1. Not real UGA fans.

or

2. know nothing about football.

or

3. Live in a dream world and have totally unrealistic expections.

In time and with a "Real Playoff" Mark Richt will get his national title. If we had a legitimate playoff when he first came to UGA he would already have one maybe more.

@GT-UT its not over this season. its Richts history, year after year, to lose games when it counts. and its usually games we are supposed to win.

he is at best a decent coach, but he is outclassed on game day by other SEC coaches and has shown that we will  NEVER get a national title while he is in charge

@GT-UT Agreed, if you make a change there are no guarantees you will get better.  However, if you don't make a change, you are pretty much guaranteed it will get no better than it has been for way too long. It's the old risk / reward principle at work.

UT as in Texas or Tennessee? Both had similar results when they made the change.

Fans and Students need to STAY AWAY for the next home game. At least DON'T GO to the first half and let the national media show the EMPTY stadium, that will send a clear and strong message to the UGA athletic staff and University

Lambert Dawg
Lambert Dawg

@Georgiadawgs98  No, just you and those crying like you need to stay away. The national media already do a great job of throwing Richt and this program under the bus. No program or coach in America does more and gets less respect than UGA from the national media.

I can't wait for the Auburn game. It's going to be fun.

There is a U-Haul outfit in Athens; seems it's time for Richt to start checking on their rates. That would be justice. Hell, we could have kept Goff and Donnan knowing what we know. They were similarly inept at avoiding details and responsibility by offering precisely the same vapid, banal excuses for the very same kind of inexplicable losses.

Having a milquetoast coach like Mark Richt lead the Georgia Bulldogs is like a pride of lions being led by a titmouse..................This just isn't working.

Mark Richt is prone to being : lazy, intellectually incurious, oblivious to detail, unmotivated, complacent, underachieving and incapable....otherwise he is an absolutely wonderful coach.

florida is not any good---the dogs were just flat and overconfident, expecting an easy win.  If they played again, the dogs would prepare and win easily.

SkokieDog

@Marmoset The problem with that is that the game is played once, and the 'Dogs obviously were not well prepared.

Richt has to go NOW.  He does not have the killer instinct to win games.  The bone head play as SC is magnified now by this bone head game plan at Fla.  With UGA leading 7-0, FLA has had 2 possessions with no first down, DAWGS have 4th and 1, all the momentum, everything going our way and Richt does not go for the first down. That started the spark Fla needed to begin their romp.  Then the Publix bag boy comes in and finds the defense and coaches sound asleep and skips into the end zone to tie the game and start the tidal wave.  Now Richt says other teams will "probably" use the same game plan? DUH!!!  Without any adjustments at UGA, those other teams should be in good shape.  I have been a season ticket holder and contributor for 30 years.  Get rid of Richt or the fans will get rid of UGA until he is gone.

SkokieDog
SkokieDog

@Armydawg Didn't that UF fake field goal play look eerily like Vanderbilt's successful fake play from last season? Yeah, Coach Richt has fixed special teams again, and he's knows what the he11 he's doing. He said so himself.

@Armydawg No one is forcing you to buy tickets or contribute. Give up your seats and keep your money.

There is a saying that the good is the enemy of the best

I think that UGA has found that to be true with Coach MediocRICHTy.

UGA has become complacent with winning 9-10 games every few years.

On top of that, they lose the 1-2 big games and also usually 1-2 games like they did to a pretty down FLORIDA team this year that they should have won.  He goes 10-2 or 9-3 every so often, but those 2-3 games are the ones that would put them over the top and into the Championship Discussion

Other SEC fan bases would have much less patience with 13 years of mediocRICHTy that UGA has endured

LarryCulPEPPER

I would love someone to ask Richt if he takes the responsibility for having two weeks to prepare for this game and his team be so woefully incompetent!!!

1. It's Nick Saban's fault.

@oldtider  How original! Typical classless bama fan obsessed with UGA.

You need to be praying that if you even make it to Atlanta, that you play Missouri and not UGA, Todd Gurley decides to go pro and not return and it's determined that Sony Michel is out for the year.

Let me get this straight. Every Georgia fan has a right to vent. As a fan, we still support our team. Doesn't mean we can't point out obvious problems.
