Sans Gurley, is all UGA hope lost? Not just yet

Let’s look on the bright side. If Georgia wanted to prove it’s not a one-man team, here’s the chance.

OK, enough cheer. When a one-man team is without its one man, it’s not a good thing. When a one-man team is without its one man going into the biggest game on its remaining schedule, it’s not a good thing. If Georgia loses Saturday at Missouri — and Georgia is, or at least was, favored — it won’t be a good thing.

But if Georgia can ride Nick Chubb and Hutson Mason (or Brice Ramsey, maybe) to a one-point victory in Columbia West, things could change. Gurley is suspended indefinitely, which means what it says. Nobody knows how long this will last. It could be for the rest of the season. It could be for one game while the NCAA sorts things out.

At the moment, it’s only an “alleged” violation. (Early reports indicate this investigation concerns memorabilia, the same transgression for which Johnny Manziel wound up being docked a whole half against Rice.) At the moment, the suspension is Georgia’s, not the NCAA’s. That’s always the correct course. Nothing ticks off the NCAA like a team that has reason to believe a player might have compromised his eligibility but lets him play anyway. Ask Georgia Tech about Demaryius Thomas.

To say the season is over because Gurley can’t play against Missouri is an overreaction. (Understandable, but still an overreaction.) Chubb is a good player. Georgia was supposed to have a lot of good players, though the other Bulldogs have spent the first five games in the shadow of their shining star.

I remember a night at Auburn in 1986. James Jackson, Georgia’s No. 1 quarterback, didn’t show, having been delayed at a funeral, and the Bulldogs weren’t supposed to beat Auburn in the first place. They upset the Tigers on the field, and not just on the field: Auburn officials were so ticked at the Georgia celebration that they turned water cannon on Georgia fans to make them leave. (The famous “Between The Hoses” game.)

Granted, Todd Gurley means more to Georgia in 2014 than James Jackson did in 1986. Todd Gurley is the best collegiate player in the land. But he’s one player, albeit a splendid one, and it’s time for the other guys on scholarship to show they can play a little, too.

you dwags slay me.  without a doubt the DUMBEST FAN BASE IN THE COUNTRY BAR NONE.

you didnt have to do a single thing more to deserve that ranking when one considers your stadium is referred to as the cesspool and the urinal in athens. your president said...

''Michael Adams, UGA President:
There was urination, there was defecation, there were 70 tons of trash.  Buildings like the Law School or the library, we’ve had to close because when we left them open the destruction was too significant.''

only the dwags would do this kind of stuff to their own campus. making them far and  away the winner of that well deserved NO 1 RANKING.

well rest assured sports fans. the dumb dwags plan on holding that title forever it seems....

" UGA fans start petition to pardon Todd Gurley ''

without a doubt almost 100% of dwag fans are  evangelical conservatives. same folks who whine about obama daily. same folks who threaten him...call him foul names.  same folks who without fail vote for people who want to cut their paychecks, benefits, ss, medicare etc while giving that saved cash to billionaires.

all together now...

YOU DWAGS ARE JUST PLAIN STUPID!

Well at least we have Keith Marshall this week… oh wait.Ok, well we have Sony Michel… nope.Well Chubb is 100% health, sorry.Well we do have a healthy Brendan Douglas!!Yes!!

This news has to have Auburn fans excited.Maybe UGA cuts Gurley all together and AU can pick up a solid RB.Nice little recruiting pipeline those guys have… If AU maybe Louisville.

Seriously though, this is just a complete punch to the gut.Gurley is the best player in CFB and now he is likely done for the year.Terrible… Just terrible.

It's time to fire CMR or aka "Lloyd Carr ".  I say send his whole staff packing top too bottom and hire Dan Mullins and his entire staff, only then will things improve in Athens.

How is this situation mark richts fault in any way? All you fair weather fans make me sick. So called Dawg fans that look for any excuse to kick the DAWGS and their coaches when they are down. Must suck to have to come on here and down are team instead of having anything interesting going on with your teams at all.

@DawgtilliDIE  Didn't Mark Richt recruit Gurley?  Isn't MR touted as a "great recruiter"?  That is what everyone says when we call for him to be fired for not winning games!

@DawgtilliDIE  Do you really think these guys are UGA fans? I seriously doubt it and if they are I hope they jump off the UGA band wagon and onto the gusbus.

Even without Gurley, UGA should beat Mizzou.  It will be a tough game.  But, they can win.  Arkansas will pose no threat at all.  After that..  The suspension will be lifted and Gurley will regain his fans in the Florida game.  Don't get me wrong.. as a Tech fan... I don't want to see Gurely..  But, for Gurley's sake, I hope he comes back and wins the Heisman.  As I said many times.. It's wrong to take jabs at these kids..  They will make mistakes because they are young.

I disagree that UGA is right to act preemptively and suspend Gurley on its own.  Auburn was faced with a much more serious circumstance in 2010 and, as we all recall, didn't suspend Cam Newton.  That thumb-your-nose-at-the-NCAA move worked out well for them.

@ShovelPlease I have to agree. Look how the NCAA treated us with AJ Green, 4-game suspension for selling a freaking jersey. The kid from Alabama goes down to Miami hangs out with an agent at his home and a party and only got 2 games.

If I was Richt (and he probably already has) I would asked Gurley for the truth and if Gurley says it's not true, I play him. But the old saying goes where there is smoke there is fire. I am sure Richt has some pretty good information to suspend him. The guy that set him up needs his butt kicked. I am not saying that Gurley is without fault. Man this really SUCKS!!!

Gurly will be back soon. This is entrapment from a low life. People need to stop buying this crap and these scumbags will go away. There is no evidence to support any money changing hands. If it's good enough for Johnny Football it's good enough for Gurley.

Lets not forget the problem that can only be mentioned in passing lest someone get their feelings hurt - the QB. Without Gurley, the issues of an ineffective passing game (as in no passing game) will be magnified as if they were viewed through the Hubble telescope. If the pressure was on Mason last week, he's got a hobnail boot on his butt this week. This house had one support beam, and it was just yanked.

Plan for rest of year - enjoy the Charleston Southern victory and be nice to Auburn folks so that maybe they call off the beat down in the 3rd quarter.

Dawg350

I really can't believe that gurley is gone...the NCAA is spineless...they make millions of dollars a year off of these athletes and then give them a harsh punishment over 400 dollars! What a joke the NCAA has become.

@Dawg350  Rules son.  You  got to go by the rules.  Blame Gurley he knew the rules. Now if that was Ala, Fla, FSU, or Auburn... dawg  fans would be cutting them down.  Just do what's right!

PS..Fire Fredi!!!!!

@Dawg350 Actually UGA acted before the NCAA could. I truly commend UGA on that. I agree.. However; this isn't anything new.. The NCAA has been and will always be about money. Gurley isn't gone.. UGA will suspend him a game or two. After that, he'll be welcomed back. Given Gurley does. I've heard a rumor he is leaving.. But, I highly doubt it. Too much on the line for him to just leave. I agree the NCAA is spineless. They investigate teams that are mid level or have past thier championship runs.. For instance... Ohio State, Miami, USC... etc; Heck USC bought Reggie Bush's family a friggin house.. It took them how long to figure that out? After USC stopped winning. Gurley is too much of a ratings getter and money maker for the NCAA to keep out. Much like Manziel.. I wouldn't worry. Mizzou lost to Indiana. Next game is Arkansas. Easy wins.. Without Gurley...

Dawg350

That's not true...I didn't cut manziel down......it's a dumb rule that should be changed!!

Dawgs need to work on spreading out the offense to have any chance through the rest of the year. Then, hold your breath when the opposing team throws the ball. Maybe Mauk will have a real sore arm tomorrow. Not looking good. Still, Go Dawgs!

Johnny Football got a half game suspension for the same thing

Lets see if there is a double standard.

Jmonty

@HeadleyLamar  It's UGA that handed the suspension out, NOT the NCAA.  So there is not double standard.  However; I don't think UGA will keep him suspended long.

UGA has won championships before without anyone named Herschel Walker, Garrison Hearst, or Todd Gurley.  Chubb's averaging over 7 yds a carry.   They can still get the job done.

@gordy85 We've only won  2 sec titles in 32 yrs  HerschelHerschel won us 1 N.Champ.

My point is, we are not that type of program that wins championships often.

This doesn't help.  Some rules are wrong. This is one of them. We shouldn't be discussing what he did or how it impacts Georgia. Rich white men get richer off of the physical ability of young black men.  Mark Emmert is a goon.  I mean look at the picture of that guy. He screams Baby-Boomer looking out for #1.
