On Todd Gurley, the straw that stirs UGA’s drink

Athens — These short takes are presented as a companion to the Georgia-Tennessee game column, which can be found here. Georgia won 35-32, FYI.

1. Sometimes it’s unclear whether the Bulldogs are trying to win because of Todd Gurley or to prove they can win without him. Example: Saturday’s third quarter. It opened with five consecutive Georgia pass plays, one of which became a Hutson Mason scramble. The first series yielded an interception, the second a three-and-out. Gurley, who would finish with 208 yards rushing, didn’t touch the ball. Indeed, he carried only four times for nine yards in a quarter that saw neither side score. Come the final moments of the fourth quarter, coach Mark Richt conceded: “We had to have Gurley with the ball in his hands there.” Six carries generated the game-clinching first downs. Had the Bulldogs saved him for the end, or had they forgotten about him earlier?

2. The passing game got a failing grade. With the Tennessee defense aligned to stop Gurley (also a fail), the way was clear for Hutson Mason to find open receivers off play-action. Didn’t happen. Mason completed 16 of 25 passes for 147 yards and threw two bad interceptions. “We need to get a little more separation,” said Richt, speaking of his receivers, and then he noted that injured wideouts Justin Scott-Wesley and Malcolm Mitchell would return to practice Monday. Richt also said this: “We’re definitely not clicking in throwing the ball, but we’re not going to abort running the ball just to prove we can sling it around.”

3. Tennessee will beat somebody good soon. Richt admitted his team was lucky it didn’t face the young Vols later in the season, and there’s a chance Tennessee will be a whole different team by November. Take away two lost fumbles — both on botched handoffs, the second of which became Georgia’s clinching touchdown — and the three second-half series missed by quarterback Justin Worley, who’d gotten hit on the elbow, and this could have been Butch Jones’ breakthrough. As it was, the Tennessee coach noted: “Of our 70 players, only 13 played in this game two years ago.”

tom,

Fill in the blank:

@OH-IO  Look dimwit Buckeye, there are all kinds of bad press for The University of Georgia this morning and you alone want to put a negative spin as best you could here, on Mr. Todd Gurley II.  You failed.  You, sir, are not too bright.  You failed in making a blog entry about something negative this morning about UGA, who are ranked higher than your Buckeyes because of Mr. Todd Gurley II.  The Police Chief already said all Mr. Todd Gurley II did was pick up the drunk redneck's hat and hand his hat to him figuratively for the redneck's slur of him personally.

If anything, TGII looks great for his handling of it.

If you are wholly unable to put any negative spin on us when your team has played 12 bowl games against us and the rest of The SEC and NEVER WON, then leave the pressure on Mr. Jere Morehead, Mr. Greg McGarity, and Mark Richt to those who can and for the good reason of smearing the good name of my alma mater on and off the field.

Mr. Todd Gurley II has already been completely exonified.

Blow harder.

The point was he put himself in position - in a bar - at 2AM.  He shouldn't be there in the first place. Not what leaders do, dimwit tom.

@OH-IO

No sir, the point is that Mr. Todd Gurley II handled the situation better than anyone could dream about ever doing right in their own life.  TGII handled it better at the time, and quickly thereafter than you're handling the situation given all this time to dream up something you wish made him look as if he was wrong, or is wrong.

Given the likes of your "national championship" with the guy who said you paid him more money there to play at Ohio State Maurice Edward Clarett $29,000 than he's made since, or during his imprisonment, that you would run in here and even attempt to make TGII look bad this morning, is a perfect example of how every post you ever write makes me puke.

Anyway, if you knew anything about O Hi O, it's round on the edges and HI in the middle - round on map mountains in middle, O round HI middle O round

I like to watch Gurely run all over people. If I was Bobo, I'd have run over three times the number of people.

The problem is with Gurely is you score too fast, don't burn clock and give your opposition all day to score agasint your lousy D.

@DIT Nah All it shows is how we should have ran the ball in Columbia

We will beat Mizzou and they will also lose to Ark and TAM

@DawginLex - I hope you are right Lex. Love the Dawgs, it's just hard to see us winning against teams that pass the ball well unless this young secondary comes to life.

If you look at UGA's games other than the Troy game, Bobo's offense is averaging 36 points per game.  If you figure in the fumble for a TD against UT as well, UGA's scoring average is 38.3 pts per game in their 3 biggest games so far.  That is plenty.  There's no reason we should be debating how and when Bobo is handing to Gurley.

But wait...there is another side of the ball as well right?  Other teams in those same 3 games (again not including Troy) are scoring an average of 30.3 pts per game.  Hence you have the problem.

If you can look at these stats and still try to blame Bobo and the offense, then something is really wrong with your perspective.

it appears the two SEC divisions need to be treated as entirely separate conferences.

MikeS777
MikeS777

@OH-IO Yeah and it appeared UGA and A&M were unbeatable after week one and the best in the SEC.  How does that look now?  We will know who's better than who as the season goes on.

MikeS777
MikeS777

As for UGA, they have got to start playing defense.  I really don't get why everyone wants to just talk about the offense.  The only reason anyone is talking about how much Bobo isn't handing to Gurley is the fact that the defense has been pathetic outside of the 2nd half of the Clemson game.

OU beat UT 34-10.  They didn't need to worry about scoring more points or who was getting how many carries because their defense did the job it was supposed to do.  This UT offense is not very explosive.

There is no excuse for UGA letting them just cruise down the field for TD's.  They drove the field before halftime for a TD in less than a minute.  It should have been 21-10 at halftime.  Up 35-25, UT drove the field in less than 2 minutes for a score.

If this defense doesn't wake up and start playing some ball, there could me more trouble when they go play Missouri, Auburn, and even Arkansas or Tech.

Mason is not Murray.  He's not a gunslinger that has total command of the offense.  He's also been without 2 very good WRs.  Still, the offense has done it's job this year.

MikeS777
MikeS777

Eh, UT has been close to beating UGA for years, but never does.  Then they go on to lose a lot of close games.  Its the same story over and over.  We heard the same excuses during Derek Dooley's tenure.  "Oh they are just young."  Well are they kicking guys out after 2 years, or what?  We hear this every single year from UT, and they lose the same games in basically the same fashion every year.  Remember they almost beat UGA's 2012 squad in Athens.  The only reason last year's game went to OT is because Gurley and Mitchell were out the whole game, and Marshall, Scott-Wesley, and Bennett missed the 2nd half.

@MikeS777 If you didn't see the difference between this UT-UGA game and the previous "close calls" of recent years, then you weren't paying attention or just remain in denial.  Credit UGA for making the plays necessary to win the game, but this was not an out-manned Vols squad playing above it's head to compete with the "mighty" dogs.  These were two teams who were more evenly matched than you probably want to admit.  The Tennessee team on the field Saturday was better than UGA at several positions.  But UGA happens to have Gurley, who is apparently from some other planet and should just be awarded the Heisman now.  Keep sleeping on Tennessee if you choose, but be assured of one thing - these are NOT Dooley's Vols.
