Live from Columbia: Will Georgia reign in the rain?

Columbia, S.C. — It’s not raining yet — the sun’s out now and it’s unbelievably humid — but, according to the Weather Channel, it’s coming. There’s a 60 percent chance of storms at 4 p.m., an 80 percent chance at 5 and a 50 percent chance at 6. Conventional wisdom holds that rain favors a running team, which both Georgia and South Carolina have been, at least to date, but rain also slows fast teams, and the Bulldogs are the faster side.

The famous David Pollack game here in 2002 featured a first-half thunderstorm so wicked that play was stopped for 52 minutes. Through three quarters, the score was 3-0. (Georgia had the three.) Pollack’s snatch-and-score made it 10-0 early in the fourth, and the Bulldogs held on, if just. Andrew Pinnock fumbled a pitch on fourth-and-1 from the Georgia 2 with 12 seconds remaining. Georgia won 13-7, a victory that would propel them to the first SEC title in 20 years.

It has been nine years since last Georgia won the conference, and winning today would send them flying into their SEC schedule. As we know, the past two weeks have been awash with prognostications of greatness for the Bulldogs, but here we ask: Did Georgia get too much credit for beating a Clemson team it was supposed to beat?

We’ll find out more about Georgia — and about South Carolina, which collapsed in its opener against Texas A&M — soon. But weather could intervene. Just sayin’.

And with that, the figurative floor is again open for comments. I’ll be here throughout, and I welcome your company. And I thank you, as ever, in advance.

Look up the word Mediocre in your Miriam Webster's dictionary and you'll see the UGA logo next to the definition of the word. UGA will continue to settle for Mark Richt results year in and year out and then wonder why fans aren't snapping up tickets to the Outback Bowl or maybe the Music City Bowl this year. UGA fans remain the most delusional in the USA believing and proclaiming every year that they are something special when the rest of the sporting world knows that the UGA Dawgs personify the word Mediocre.

Outside of Gurley  and few others... this team lacks tuffness, heart, aggressiveness, personality and leadership.....Uga has been FOOLS-GOLD the last 7 yrs .....I wasn't fool or buying in this year with all the off season talk....You should never bragg about  this program .....until they show up and play & coach like they should. Program is soft.

@ruffdawg Whatever.  I didn't see a problem with the effort of the players.  As for leadership, you may have a point but what do you expect when Murray is gone along with several dismissed/transferred players?

The problem begins and ends with coaching.  Offensive play calling that settles for field goals in horrible conditions and a weak defensive game plan will do you in.

@ Steve the King, best quote of the night, "The greatest players can't win if they are not given the chance."  With that I'm going to watch some more football.  Mike Bobo?  Why didn't you give the ball to Gurley?

This was a team that gave up 832 yards passing and 66 first downs in their first two games.

This game was over in the 2nd quarter.  The way SC completed passes over the middle at will meant short of them turning the ball over 4 or 5 times, it appeared that there's no way UGA was going to catch them without an onside kick or fake punt at some point.  I was shocked that they made it a game in the 4th quarter.

Gary Danielson might be annoying to many but he was spot on when he said neither team has a championship defense.  That's all you need to know about this game.  Pruitt can't allow this team to bleed a slow death like they did today.

It was a good, close game and easily could have gone either way.

1. What are the chances Marshall Morgan would lock up and miss two chip shot field goals? Maybe the ball was wet and slippery.  Why not stop play and put a dry ball in play?

2. Who could imagine a fifth year starter intentionally grounding the ball in that situation. He was right in front of fans who were throwing trash (including softballs) in the end zone. The officials should have put a stop to that. It was pretty intimidating and out of control environment in the north end zone.

A. Why was Gurley on the sideline? Why was he not used in kickoff returns too?

B. Did the Dawgs carry any timeouts back to Athens?

3. The Dawgs clearly stuffed USC on both third and fourth down. As a matter of fact, the runners were stopped for losses. The spotting was ludicrous. The NCAA does need to embed the football with a GPS chip. There's an App for that.

C. The weather delay hurt both teams.

The greatest players can't win if they are not given the chance.

Great game!

@Steve_The_King_Spurrier

1. Score touchdowns

2.Give the ball to your Heisman Trophy candidate RB

3. Don't give up 38 points in the first place, and play some defense in the first half for once.

4. The weather delay obviously did not hurt USC, who put up 24 points in the first half and built an 11-point lead executing a great game plan on both sides of the ball.

Thing is , I guess its just too much to expect a Richt-coached team to come out a just dominate from the opening kickoff. Seriously, anyone remember the last time a highly ranked UGA team did that against a lower ranked opponent, road or at home? Nope, have to play like you haven't watched a game tape for two weeks in the first half, before your supremely talented running back almost bails you out in the second half.

@playmeortrademe  Anyone who knows this series knows the games are almost always hard fought.  Tonight was no different.  Can't say we were outcoached even.  Bobo just outsmarted himself.

DawgnIT

@playmeortrademe I am pretty sick of UGA's rope-a-dope style of play.  I need to see less Ali and more Tyson attitude out of this program.  Dang Dawgs look like Rocky after being triple teamed by Creed, Lang, and Drago!

LADawg

We gave up a 2nd and 20, the middle was open, SC receivers roamed free outside, and we were gashed repeatedly by runs. All the same as last year. BUT, with the game on the line the D got the ball back very much unlike last year.

The announcers thought Bobo was a complete idiot. They sugar coated it for the fans.

Well where is that vagina Richt? Grow a pair and override that dumba$$ call by Bobo!

@GSPInc  Bobo was a complete idiot.  No explanation for the play calling that last series.  If I'm Todd Gurley, I may quit on Bobo

@GSPInc Doesn't take much to sugar coat anything for the hydrant humpers.

LADawg

@Mobile Dawg @GSPInc Gurley willed first downs with no blocking several times. I'm sure Richt was listening to the play call on first down. The way he throws away TOs, I can't believe he didn't call one to ask Bobo WTH.

The good news is tonight's loss doesn't matter.  Better Pruitt to have a bad game against the best offensive mind on the schedule in September than to have a tough loss in late October or November.

South Carolina still isn't that good.  Our defense helped make them look better than they are.  Florida will beat them simply because they'll play defense.

As long as this serves as a wake up call to Pruitt on setting the tone early instead of sandbagging and letting a decent offense drive 75 yards way too many times then UGA is still in good shape.

Gurley still looks like a beast, Chubb still looks like Gurley Lite, and Sony is not a one hit wonder.

Bobo's a dgd, just please someone have him explain his stupidity.

GSPInc
GSPInc

He doesn't trust his line to beat the man in front of him. Bama's line would have demanded they give it to the RB behind them....but they wouldn't have to. Their coach believes in them and the RB. He demands it from his oline and RB and trusts they are hungry enough to ram it down the other teams throat and win the game when in reach. Bobo got worried. He didn't trust his guys. The dawgs lost. This is not the first or even fifth time this scenario has played out.

@Mobile Dawg Agree MB did not call a very good game especially the plays in the red zone after Swans INT.  The rollout on 1st down inside the ten was pure stupid.  The series [prior where we scored was run run run. Hutson  played behind AM for a reason.  He doesn't have the it factor nor the arm Murray had. And Pruitt revealed tonight he may be a flash in the pan over rated DC.  SC ran the same [play on their scoring series at least 6 times in a row over left tackle and guard. Pruitt had no answer for SC's running game nor did he have an answer to SC's passing game. We shudda, coulda, won that game but Morgan missed 2 key FG's all within his range and Bobo, Hutson, could not capitalize within the red zone and score TD's.

Gurley's TD run called back because of a hold was bogus, there clearly was no hold and both announcers agreed GA should be upset w/that call. Same for the intentional grounding call that hit the SC players leg was also a blown call.  Would we have scored had it not been called maybe if Bobo doesn't call another stupid play like the previous one and allow hicks or Gurley to pound it in.  It was only 8 yds.

I thought things might be different after the Clemson game but w/GA its always something each and every year that new coaches, fairly good players, cannot over come the same issues each and every year that keeps the dawgs from putting the opposition away.  Credit to Spurrier, he has CMR's number.  It was throw and catch all night for his offense and run consistently to make 3rd downs.  GA couldn't do that.  It failed on 3rd down most of the night.

GA will most likely have several more losses this year. MO will maul them.  AU as well. TN, Ark and FL have a good chance as well.  it'll be another long season.

@RED DOG 77 RED, we are now talking fishing.  Bought a new  boat a couple of months ago, now I'm a fair weather fan.  At least I know what I'm getting when I go fishing.  I used up a whole Saturday, sacrificed a pig, to watch a completely clueless OC make the most ignorant play call in his career, with the best running back in America in the backfield.

Awesome. Way to go OBC! UGA never lead in the game, how sweet!

The reason we lost the game, for those who would assign blame: We didn't score as many points as South Carolina did

@RED DOG 77 yes and winners cheat and UGA does it the right way and thats why we lost.  Correct?
