Your Heisman Trophy frontrunner? UGA’s Gurley

According to Jimmy Shapiro of Props PR, Georgia’s Todd Gurley is now the Heisman Trophy betting favorite, at least according to Bovada. Perhaps this should be taken with a pound of salt, seeing as how Texas A&M’s Kenny Hill, who has played two collegiate games, ranks third, one spot ahead of Florida State’s Jameis Winston, who already has a Heisman.

From Kenny Bradley, manager of Bovada’s sports book:

An influx of money on (last week’s) second favorite Todd Gurley has catapulted him to the top of list all alone now at 5-1. While we are more likely to move off money and adjust to betting trends with something like the Heisman because of the subjectivity of it all and how it is not as mathematical as some of the other props we offer, to move a Heisman candidate this much in two days is very unusual.

The top dozen, per Bovada:

1. Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia  5/1

2. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon  11/2

3. Kenny Hill, QB, Texas A&M  15/2

4. Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State  8/1

5. Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA  16/1

5. Everett Golson, QB, Notre Dame  16/1

5. Nick Marshall, QB, Auburn  16/1

8. Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor  20/1

9. Trevor Knight, QB, Oklahoma  20/1

10. Cameron Artis-Payne, RB, Auburn 25/1

10. Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin  25/1

10. T.J. Yeldon, RB, Alabama  25/1

A note or two about this: As great as Gurley was against Clemson, Georgia’s intention to use four tailbacks could prove harmful, Heisman-wise if not team-wise. Gurley carried 15 times against the Tigers. Nick Chubb, Sony Michel and Keith Marshall carried a total of 16 times. That’s a far cry from a Herschel-type workload. (Then again, if Gurley averages 13.2 yards per carry over an entire season, he won’t just win the Heisman — he’ll be the first unanimous choice.)

And there’s a part of me who wonders how much of what Gurley and Georgia did against Clemson had to do with Clemson, which as we know can collapse like nobody else. (Final score from last year: FSU 51, Clemson 14. And that was in Pickens County, S.C., with Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins playing for the Tigers.)

I’m also surprised that Gurley jumped ahead of Mariota the week after Oregon ran through Michigan State in the fourth quarter, pretty much the same way the Bulldogs trampled Clemson. Mariota was splendid against the Spartans, which I guess means that Gurley must have enjoyed an even better week in practice. (Georgia had a bye.)

Understand: I’m not trying to suggest that Gurley isn’t great (he is) or Georgia isn’t very good (it is). But I await the result from Columbia, S.C., before allowing myself to get too carried away. We’ll know a lot more in 51 hours.

You're a hideous freak Mark. Gurley?! Lol. Spurrier owns UGA . . . Year after year after year after year. Our QB has a ton better stats than Gurley and he is only a sophomore! !! THWG and Clemson too!

Bradley...you have to be kidding me.  You do realize they've only played one game...right?  Gurley won't be in the top five when the year ends...he'll suffer a season ending injury soon or will end up in trouble like the rest of his teammates (convicts).  Closest Gurley comes to a Heisman is seeing a picture of it.  Tech has a better chance at winning the National Championship than Gurley does of winning this once prestigious award.

@RickinWarnerRobins You obviously know nothing about Gurley if you think he's going to get in trouble. The guy has kept his nose clean since he's been here and has been a DGD both on and off the field. Go troll somewhere else. It's not needed nor wanted here.

DawgGoneIt

@Princess_Leia Really?! Crowell didn't even make it through his freshman year. Gurley is a junior and the best RB in the country on one of the best teams in college football and hasn't gotten into trouble once.

If Gurley goes for over 100 yards this week at SC, book the Heisman.  The Gators are the only other team on the schedule that have a chance at holding down his stats.  Still, Auburn would be the biggest game left and their defense just won't be able to stop him.

Oregon on the other hand, still has UCLA and Stanford.  Stanford has given that offense of theirs fits the last couple of years, holding them to 20 pts or less both times.  For all the hype on their offense, both Stanford and USC give them a lot of trouble if not beat them.  Mariota will need a good game against Stanford which IMO is far less likely than Gurley having good games against SC, Florida, and Auburn.

@MikeS777 So if Gurley rushes 20 times for 100 yards this weekend against a team that won't even be ranked next week the Heisman is his? After 2 games?

Would you 'necks PLEASE stop with the "Book It", "Mark It Down", etc crappola? If you were so FN smart with sports you would be in Vegas as a bookmaker rolling in the $$$. But the majority of you live in elongated aluminum cans with wheels.......so STOP IT ALREADY. GurleyMan is NOT winning the Heisman. He has only played one game against a very mediocre team. Carolina will dash most of his Heisman hopes on Saturday.....Tennessee will take care of any leftovers. BOOK THAT S***T!!!!

Mariota will be hard to beat if he and Oregon have a stellar season.  If all goes well and all stay healthy it should be a very interesting race between Mariota and Gurley.  I would include Winston but not sure how the bad press is going to affect him; the video tape of him stuffing crabs in his pants is embrassing.  Rehashing the assault allegations can't help.

Gurley has a million dollar personality and is the essence of a team player - that can't hurt.

Folks its way too early for any of this talk! A 1,000 things could happen along the way. Obviously if Gurley stays healthy then he'll likely be in the conversation. But I'm like those who think he won't get enough carries to stand out over the whole season. And that's a GOOD thing! I couldn't care less about the Heisman...win games!!! Think whole season, balanced, stay fresh, healthy... Go Dogs!!!!

gurley should get 200+ in the big games---south carolina, tennessee, florida, auburn---he will lock up the heisman early---mark it down!

@DawgGoneIt Read the blog above. Even Bradley doesn't think he will win.

I have a feeling Richt is trying to get him a Heisman. Richt going to use Gurley advantageously, in spots where he will succeed. He got 15 carries last game and didn't need any more. Richt knows what's at stake here and Gurley will get the chances he needs.

DawgGoneIt
DawgGoneIt

Gurley's biggest obstacle isn't even the injury bug. It's the depth UGA has at RB. We rotate in and out and he probably won't tote the ball more than 20 times in a single game unless he's just on fire and wants it/demands the ball. That might hurt his chances. But Gurley is so great he can make due with 15-20 carries and put up big numbers. He can definitely win the Heisman. Will he? Gotta take what he did in week 1 and span it over 12 games. Also the Heisman is practically the QB of the best team in the country. It's definitely a QB driven award. Last RB to win it was Mark Ingram in 2009.

Gurley's biggest obstacle is the injury bug, not the other teams

I think Richt knows how he messed up with Moreno by not playing him his Freshman year. He left and we only got his services for two years. That is why Richt now plays Freshmen who are good enough because he encourages them to leave after three years if they can go high enough in the draft.

Richt knows if Gurley can get the numbers with yards that he can not be the one to hold Gurley back from going for the Heisman by restricting his carries . So I expect Richt to let Gurley carry the ball over 20 times a game or unless he gets tired at which time he will use Marshall or Chubb.

If Gurley doesn't get hurt I think he will get over 1600 yards this year on the ground and over 1000 through the air and return yards.

I think Quarterback's have dominated the Heisman for so long everybody would vote for him if he had the numbers and Georgia finished in the top 10.

Reaganite

@C-Kirk In CMR's defense Moreno was behind Lumpkin and Brown when he was a true freshman. But like you say, that may have been a learning experience for CMR.  Moreno had a rough start in NFL.  I know he has made a ton of money but I wonder if another year at UGA would have made a difference.

"Even if Gurley has a good game this weekend, UGA won't play another big game until Auburn"

Florida St played three big games all last season and Winston won the Heisman. Clemson, the ACC championship and national title games. Yet Winston won the Heisman simply because he was the best player in the country. Something you would never admit about a player from UGA.

@Rick_James You can somewhat get away with that if you are a QB of the best team in the country and you are playing at a ridiculous level for pretty much the entire season. If Gurley duplicates the Clemson game every game for the entire season, which everyone knows he won't, then he has a chance. I still doubt he would win.

GTBob

@DawginCO Here is a fact. 13 of the last 14 Heisman Trophy winners have been QBs.

KeepOnSmilingWetWillie

dawginbama
dawginbama

@GTBob @dawginbama i have a response to every ignorant comment you have made. the fact is history means nothing with awards.  the game has turned to featuring the QB more and the stats prove that.  Stats and record are all that matters when deciding the heisman.  if uga is in contention for the SEC it will be bc of Todd Gurley and Jeremey Pruitt.  Pruitt can't win the Heisman so Gurley is the obvious choice from Georgia not Hutson Mason.

dawginbama
dawginbama

@GTBob @dawginbama no its trend.  reading comprehension was not your strong suit was it.  the game used to be based on RB's now that everyone is going hurry up spread it tends to feature the QB.  Look at the one in the last 14 you aren't mentioning.  Ingram was the bell cow on a championship team.  Record and stats.  A run heavy team that wins has a good chance of sending the back to New York.

GTBob
GTBob

@dawginbama Ingram won because there wasn't even a slightly legitimate QB candidate to beat him. Tony Gerhart of all people was the runner up.

DoubleDawg
DoubleDawg

@GTBob @dawginbama I would agree it is much easier to win as a QB which makes it more impressive that some in vegas have him as a favorite.  RB's get hurt and share carries more than QB's and football in general (NFL) has become a QB driven sport.  If Gurley wins this in this era it speaks volumes about his talent.

PigIron

@DoubleDawg

Gurley is obviously a very talented running back. The odds in Vegas though, are driven (as with point spreads) by the betting preferences. Lot's of folks are betting on Gurley right now. It would be interesting to know how many of those bets were placed by Georgians.
