Live from Falcons-Saints: This ain’t no foolin’ around

The Falcons have a shot to turn the NFC South upside down. (Curtis Compton/AJC)

A fairly big season for the local 11 (or 53, to be precise) kicks off with a big-time game. More than a few folks think the New Orleans Saints will win the Super Bowl, though I’m not among those. Maybe one or two people think the Atlanta Falcons will be good again, and I am one of those.

The Saints are favored on the road, which doesn’t often happen in the NFL unless you’re visiting Jacksonville. I’m not a bettor, but that seems to me a money-making opportunity. This is a prove-it game for the team that just went 4-12. It won’t be the end of the world if the Falcons lose, but winning would be a rather large step on the road to rectifyin’, as Thomas Dimitroff would put it if he were in the habit of dropping his “g’s”, which he isn’t.

In sum, I like the Falcons to win. Make it 24-20. Perhaps you disagree. That’s why the comment box exists. I’ll be here until someone does win — and long after, I expect — and I’ll check back periodically. And I thank you, as ever, in advance.

What a sweeeeeet victory.  A nice blowout win by the Falcons would be nice but as long as Atlanta wins I will keep pacing and cursing. Suck it taint's fans!!   Y'all are never courteous so why should I be?

Ghetto AINT'S fans have gone back into their closet.

Too bad they can't figure out how to get home to their sewer, new orleans. Katrina is over looters.

Matt Ryan showed today that he has taken that next step to elite status. I thinking that having to do it all last season with no O line and 3rd string WRs was actually good for him. Now he doesn't have to and that has made him a lot better.

@kerryb Yep,today with this OL and these backs to support him,Ryan looked ELITE. No 'Give Up' in this team. None.

What were the Bears thinking by not using Hester more...

@Not So Fast I dont know but Good Job Front Office for getting Hester in here! He looked terrific!

Last year Ryan spent he season running for his life. He's always had the potential to do this and with 3 healthy receivers and a good enough running game to help balance things out let’s hope this kind of thing will happen more often.

448 yards and 3 TDs. Trying to figure out if the Saints defense is that bad or if Matt Ryan is just that good.

Only thing missing in this game was a Steve Bartkowski Big Ben pass.

This sure sounds different than the first half of the game.

Freeman will be our Ray Rice,I ll say it. He is a little beast! Great balanced game plan. Platooned RBs,had some variety. Great OL play! Allowed only one sack by the Saints,D,no slouches at all. Take away the fumble by Julio and a better pass rush and we dont just win,we WHUP a very solid team! Great game!

Then, please keep him away from his fiancé.....if he has one.

@zuzu331 Smith seems to make plays every game for them.  That rookie from FSU played well also.  They have some real depth behind Ryan and that O line.  O line played great even with Baker and Matthews out.

Is it next Saturday and Sunday yet?  Great to have football back.....isn't it?  Baseball who?

@TampGator1 I asked that baseball question in May when the NBA playoffs started.  haha  Been watching racing too.  Even watched CFL when it started up in July lol.

Seen it wasn't luck the Saints choked in clutch time. I mean anyone can always play the what if game. What if Julio didn't fumble, what if Jake Matthews didn't get hurt.... But the simple fact is as today stands the 2014 Saints are choke artists.

TampGator1

Bears are my second favorite team......but what were they thinking by not playing Hester as a slot receiver....or letting him go in the first place.  Great pick up by the Falcons GM.....who a lot of people on here want to get rid of.  Folks....before he and Smith got here.....don't believe the Falcons ever had two winning seasons in a row.  Lots of injuries to the Falcons last year.  Hard to win in the NFL when you have that many injuries to so many key players.

@MikeS777 @DawgNole @TampGator1

We've BEEN in the playoffs a number of times. It's way PAST time to "worry about winning more playoff games."

Haven't been worried enough, IMO.

I wondered the same thing after actually seeing Heater as a receiver. How did Chicago not use him once there??

I thought atlanta was overpaying for a one trick pony, but after today it's obvious the old guy can still play receiver and return.

MikeS777
MikeS777

@TampGator1 Yeah I agree.  I think the GM screwed up last year letting Abraham, Grimes, and Robinson go off the D, but I think they redeemed themselves with this offseason.

Falcon fans need to understand you crawl before you walk.  Keep the team in the winning column and playoffs, and eventually a Super Bowl will come.  Even if it doesn't, I'd rather see them with winning records every year than back to losing most of the time.

After almost 50 years, it's all about playoff success, and they haven't brought us that yet. Just gotta hope change is in the wind.

MikeS777

@HotDawg I kind of thought the same.  Glad to see I was wrong haha

MikeS777

@DawgNole @MikeS777 @TampGator1 We had never had two winning season in a row before 2008-2009.  We hadn't been the playoffs two years in a row before 2010-2011.  Now you want to get greedy? haha  I get that at some point you have to take the next step, but I think last year showed how fleeting success can be if your not careful.

MikeS777
MikeS777

@TampGator1 The GM and Smith did a great job with coaching changes too.  Bringing in Tice for the O line and Cox for the D line in addition to all the bodies they brought in for both lines.  The lines were the problem last year and they went out hard to solve it.  Looks like it payed off so far.

MikeS777
MikeS777

@DawgNole @MikeS777 @TampGator1 I'll take 5 years in a row of winning records and no super bowls any day.  Maybe you forgot, but all we did was lose most of the time before 2008.  You can't win super bowls if you can't stay in the playoffs.

DawgNole
DawgNole

@MikeS777

I NEVER forget about the Falcons.

Why would you be happy with no Super Bowls after 48 years? Winning regular-season records are fine, but when you've failed in the postseason for as long as the Falcons have, you should aspire to more.

MikeS777
MikeS777

That Saints defense was 4th in the league last year, so this was a no joke great offensive performance all around.  They have one of the best D lines in the league, and they only got one sack and rarely even hit Ryan.
